Hey Martin, one trick I do is to hang the plastic tarp with tape so that it covers the entire opening of the fireplace, and cut a slit in the middle to feed the brush and rod through. At the bottom of that slit, I put the hose from my shop vac, which stays on the whole time I'm cleaning the chimney. It's not perfect, but it does cut down on the black dust that gets out. You just need to make sure you have a good filter on your shop vac.
