Why Are Young People Falling Off "The Resilience Cliff"?

  • Today, my 'umble opinions from my personal observations. No science, no double-blind tests, no rigorous research. As usual.
But I want to explore this notion that young people lack resilience, and if it's true, why it is, and what can be done about it.
To be clear: this is not giving anyone an excuse to avoid becoming a responsible person, or reject their responsibilities. That is not an option. I simply consider that it’s unfair to lay the blame entirely at the individual’s feet if they aren’t resilient.
I welcome any thoughts you have, and any insights you'd like to share.
Also: eyes out for the cameo from the cat.
    It's good to be back!

Really love your insight! I definitely feel I am personally affected by this as a young person, but more a so it’s either being completely thrown into responsibility to an unnecessary and/or unrealistic extent, or not having the opportunity to take responsibility because the tools are withheld, and also never seeming to have the chance to incorporate responsibility fully into my life like you discussed due to protection. I suffer from a lot of failure anxiety, and at times it feels paralysing because it’s constantly lurking…the way you described it was a perfect description imo! Once the anxiety has developed it’s hard to progress beyond the way in which we’ve learnt that “failure is the be all and end all” impression, because of the amount of protection and inexperience we have toward actually ‘failing’. I study psychology, and it strikes me that I see a similar resemblance to the fear of failure being fuelled by protection and avoidance, to the nature of phobias: avoidance reinforces the phobia because we fear and anticipate it for a prolonged time and throw it out of proportion…and then when we’re hit with failure itself, when it is too much it makes me from experience less willing to try again as the fear has essentially been lived and proven to be ‘real’…being eased into failure and having self-responsibility for our actions is certainly something I think we need to emphasise more in terms of managing stress and navigating life, as it’s pretty much essential for life. I really love the hill analogy when you explain how easing into this would be way more beneficial and less detrimental in terms of consequence as opposed to being thrown straight into the deep end and feel unprepared, and falling straight to the bottom which the failure anxiety dreads constantly! It’s no wonder so many young people like me and like you have witnesses yourself, have developed this crippling failure anxiety…😣
I found your channel through the conscience video you made on the Ethics playlist, as I also study Philosophy and ethics, and adore the way you explain it by linking key scholars/theologians and key concepts. The world needs thinkers like you to preach things as we see it and to suggest ways to improve the society we live in! Awesome video, and will stay tuned for sure.

    A few things,
    Cat at 11:15 roughly ;)
As a young person myself, these ideas do make sense. I've been employed for a year and definitely discovered that there is a sense of accountability that must be taken for even the slightest of things that, to me, I've found very foreign and at times frustrating before. As time passes, I've taught myself to adapt a bit and tell myself that taking responsibility is a good thing to do even if some mistakes are particularly frustrating. Similarly, in attempting to launch a few bands in my time, I've been hit with total and complete failure before. I've definitely wanted to quit before, however having such a passion for music in particular has spurred me onwards. Yes, I'm afraid of my next little project going wrong again, but it's worth trying until I succeed. Playing in bands and being employed has definitely taught me a sense of resilience that I hadn't acquired before, however the fear of failure does often remain. Especially after putting time into writing songs lol.
And last thing, cool Alice In Chains shirt 🤘 hope you're well!

Return of the king - nice video Eddie.
I am probably one of the least resilient people I know, and I think this has come from not needing to take much responsibility, and even when I do, it all turns out fine with minimal effort, which leaves me never having to adapt or change. Would be interested in your thoughts about those who don't particularly struggle at school but are also quite lazy and don't work very hard.

Thanks for your input, Charlie. It’s good to be back.
It’s an interesting assessment that you have made about yourself, and my immediate response is to enquire as to how you came to that conclusion.
That said, if we take the premise at face value: I would say that a person of this description is at risk of exactly the situation I am describing. The real world may well be a very great shock, because they have not been pushed to develop that resilience.
Whilst I believe that it is unfair to blame those without it for their dearth of resilience, that this resilience is nonetheless essential. And I believe it is an individual’s responsibility to TAKE responsibility. It may be unfair that no one prepared this individual, but they still have to be responsible for themselves. I can’t abide by those who blame others for their own failings.
I applaud anyone with the self-awareness that they are not resilient, but it would also be wise to begin preparing for the big shift that awaits them.

@@EddieEducation Very interesting - the assessment is simply from my observations haha. And yes I agree, and I started trying to build this resilience myself as soon as i noticed that I was struggling. Hope all is well :))
