THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

@@MarshallLeeAMaybe the 3 Echo Echoes turning into 3 Bens is a glitch since Echo Echoes always have the Omnitrix/Ultimatrix symbol on them and you could theorize on how the Ultimatrix tries to detect the "Real Ben" when transforming back to base form.
But I don't get how Jetray's Hyperspeed space or any other ability used could be considered a glitch as it has nothing to do with touching the Ultimatrix like with the 3 Echo Echoes.
Same with Upgrade's eye laser in classic 😭

Fun fact: I'm pretty sure Astrodactyl started out as a fan alien. I remember seeing a picture of a pterodactyl alien with that name on Deviantart as a kid. I think it was supposedly a Ben 10,000 alien, but I can't quite remember or find the image.
I think you're talking about Bendactyl by kjmarch. I definitely don't think they have the same powerset, though. I have heard people say something similar with his art of Rubix-Dude and Overflow for Bloxx in Omniverse and the real Overflow for the Reboot.

I love how this releases after Ryan was probably getting an ulcer at Astrodactyl’s Ultimate yesterday, turning an alien he already hated into something that basically embraces the stuff Ryan hates about certain aliens 😂 (admittedly, that Ultimate was still really cool, but Gravattack’s still my favorite)
On the toy side, Astrodactyl looks easier to make a good mold for, where Jetray's wing bits just kinda hang there disconnected to the body
Recall a Bionicle-style Jetray having its own plastic wings you attached to the wings so he could move his arms around.
Love how the incurseans just blasted near Young One just to fuck with him like "Oh hey a child. Blast em."

I think DJW said Jetray never showed up in Omniverse was because he couldn't settle on a uniform for him. That and, apparently CN told the OV crew to stop adding aliens to the show, which also meant re-adding old ones.
While I missed jetray I still enjoyed the other aliens and I am glad to see them and the Derrick designs for the missing aliens
the fasttrack design of him is perfect, much better then the UAF one that looks like a super hero not an alien, also the feline pupils eyes fit fasttrack so well

BUT, having not only Jetray but also Chameleon and Spitter absent in Omniverse is just sad. (Fasttrack can jump off a cliff and shoot himself tho)
I must say seeing the backlash towards Astrodactyl was a surprised, he is probably one of my favorite aliens in the show for his presence and design and being a replacement didn't really cross my mind. (And ironically, I did really like the parrot sound thing)

This makes me wonder if the crew who worked on the reboot decided since they could get away w/ giving reboot ben humongasaur, they made a mad dash to add jetray since he was absent from omniverse.
Would explain why they added him so hastily.

I’ll say this about jetray, I like him but they made him too op. He can fly, swim in water, shoot lasers and travel through space in supersonic speed. However, I found astrodactyl a lame flying alien, him using a jet pack was ridiculous to me
To me jetray lasers are kinda weak,they to me feel more like a suport ability more than a powefull attack ,if i had him i would used for the speed and space and underwater,while astrodactyl for real damage up close ,
To me I always found Jetray the lame one design wise powerset wise voice wise and the like.
That was a problem with a lot of early UAF aliens. They had too many overlapping powers that made other aliens obsolete

Personally, I like the idea of having similar transformations when it comes to abilities, it gives creators the chance to use a concept already used in another direction, regardless of whether the direction is similar or different, it's still fun, especially because it becomes more unpredictable and we can see Ben's creativity. The watch is not a weapon, so using weaker or less unique transformations is not a bad thing, especially considering that we have many aliens whose main power is super strength or electricity
From the example provided in the video, Eatle and Upchuck are the most different and I think that Eatle is an underappreciated and misunderstood alien and the fact that people say that he is an Upchuck rip off seems stupid to me
Eatle has greater strength being able to destroy the ground with his hands while running, break metal with ease and is especially strong when using his horn being able to push Vilgax into a wall while Vilgax fights back, the same version of to Vilgax who could throw an entire building. Eatle also sent Vilgax far away sending him in 3 turns
He is very resistant, being able to face Lucubre Vilgax and he is immune to electricity
He can jump very high, he is good at climbing and he is very fast
I know they aren't very unique buffs but Eatle is meant to be a new Strong Fighter and no one has a problem with Rath and Shockswatch so why would it be a problem with Eatle
The thing I like the most about Eatle is his fighting style in which he uses his horn, which makes him unique
Upchuck eats faster and more and can lift very heavy weights with his tongue and consumes large amounts of energy
Eatle consumes less but generates energy more easily and has a longer shooting range, the body is more capable and can consume organic matter (we don't know if it can consume energy although it probably can)
You know I was fine with Astrodactyl but I think they should have probably made his powers yellow since he uses Star Power. Not only would that differentiate him from Jetray a little but you could also connect his powers to Dwarf Star Energy or Star Energy we have seen enemies especially Psyphon use a bunch of times (well one time for Psyphon)
Either that or change Astrodactyl’s color scheme and not having the same red and orange/yellow as Jetray.

Honestly, out of the 3 "flying aliens" - Stinkfly, Jetray and Astrodactyl, the latter is my favourite. Just a fan of dinosaurs and jetpacks, I suppose.

the problem with astrodactyl in my opinion is the jet pack, i much prefer the redesign that TheHawkDown gave him where his wings are made of energy

One scene that i kinda liked was when Ben, Rook, and Young one were climbing up on of the hills because it shows the differences between both species since Ben has to run up each segment and both Rook and Young one can easily just jump.

I do like Astrodactyl, also people hating him for being a "replacement" makes me wonder what do they think Jetray was to Stinkfly and why that was ok.
Astrodactyl uses the exact same colour scheme as jetray and has similar powers the only thing stinkfly has in common with jetray is that they can both fly

I really like the dynamic between psychobots and Attea on the other hand I didn't understand the scene where psycho tries to betray Attea and after being caught he begs her while the guy can easily kill her with his shocks or at least paralyze her
This episode is as a lot fun I like how supportive Rook’s dad was throughout the episode it’s a nice change of pace and heartwarming. I think Astrodactyl is too overhated he isn’t super unique but I do like his Jetpack blast effect and his combat with the whips was pretty cool and skillful on Ben’s part

It didn't help that Jetray was still playable in the online Ben 10 Omniverse game creator where they just reused his sprite from the UAF version.
There's plenty of room for repeat powers among the ~1,000,910 aliens, since real life nature is "unoriginal" with its designs, fictional nature should be allowed to be unoriginal as well.
Tell me if you've heard thim one before: a species that hunts as a group to take down prey, occasionally working with other groups of the same species to take out larger threats.
The species I was thinking of with that description was the Fringed Jumping Spider from Queensland Australia. I bet you weren't expecting a spider to fit that description?
Hey man, just a quick thing to say, the spots of Terraspin's shell could be one of two things. One, his shell is just dirty. Or two, the parts that make the shell are peeling. Which does happen naturally.
I understand not being thrilled by aliens with the same powers having a lot of the same sub-powers, but to quote Casual Geographic: "same test same solution, that's convergent evolution".
I think I’d prefer Astrodactyl if his wings weren’t retractable. It’s just weird to me how he does a Buzz Lightyear thing. Like it’s an actual jet pack.

Rook is hands down one of the best additions to the Ben 10 universe ever and I really loved the development his family and planet got periodically in the show. It definitely could have been more, but considering the show's track record it's really nice. We got to see Rook inspire his younger siblings and them grow through that. We got to see Rook clash with the old traditions of his culture while forging his own path and paving the way for others to do the same. We also got to see how despite how this he still kept his culture at home and found how to be himself without forgoing his roots or stifling his aspirations.
Also yes, rip to Jet Ray. I really just wanted his hyperspeed to be utilized better. I know Omniverse wanted to introduce new aliens, but at this stage I wanted to see Ben periodically use all his aliens from prior eras. This isn't like AF where the Omnitrix Rebooted. He should be on the path to mastery in Omniverse with his completed non-prototype model made specifically for him. Omniverse was always a bit of a let down on that promise seemingly because the network (CN) wanted to push a more OG series Ben when that's not how development works (or consistent writing for that matter).
The network also didn't want Anymore aliens added past season 5 because they thought there was too many. Which means aliens prior that didn't appear in omniverse can't appear later which screwed over new aliens being added and old ones returning.

hot take: I actually prefer Astrodactyl to Jetray, I just find Jetray boring with his powers just being flight and lasers while Astrodactyl has his energy whips for added flavor and he has a more interesting design, Jetray's design isn't bad but it feels like a bog standard flying transformation while Astrodactyl is based on a specific flying creature in this case a tetradactyl which already fits in with Ben's more reptilian transformations like Humongosaur without being nearly as boring as the latter
TLDR I like Astrodactyl more than Jetray as I find he has a more interesting design and he has more unique powers then just flight and laser blasts

To be fair, I always kinda thought Jetray sucked; he's definitely my least favorite of Playlist 3. I remember when Alien Force first came out, I thought the aliens felt like hybrids of two of Ben's previous aliens (Swampfire being Wildvine AND Heatblast is the obvious one) which is such a silly idea, because it suggests that the way Ben's aliens were designed conceptually before were somehow boring/not good enough. Jetray is a good example of that. Because he's the aquatic alien, like Ripjaws, but he also flies and shoots lasers and has superspeed; feels overdesigned to me.
I liked the previous aliens having drawbacks, like Ripjaws not being great against fire, or Grey Matter being just a little guy. I do love Brainstorm, and a big part of why is thanks to Omniverse, but he's essentially "Grey Matter but not tiny and also has electricity powers." I don't need a bunch of aliens like Walkatrout or The Worst, who just suck, but give me more aliens that are powerful in specific ways and can't do a million different things.
And in this sense, yeah, Astrodactyl is a spiritual sequel to Jetray, just with Omniverse's more wacky approach to character creation; ergo, he sucks harder xD
I don't mind Astrodactyl just they've could have done more to make him more unique, like have an episode revolve around him and Humongousaur and their symbiosis togeather. I always Astrodactyls race like the skeksis.

Honestly, when you think about it, a lot of Ben’s aliens tend to have a fair degree of overlap. I guess that’s inevitable when you keep having to create new transformations to make toys of, though.
Good to see the incursean arc had more build up then I remember. Rooks family is always nice to see too. Ever still I do think Astrodactyl gets way too much hate, he's definitely my favorite alien from OV, and I honestly I enjoy him more than Jetray even if I still think he should've gotten an appearance in the show.

I really don't have a strong opinion on Jetray. Of the 10, he was always the guy who was sorta just there for me. For things I like, him being an all terrain alien is something I think is very cool. Him being able to seamlessly move from atmosphere to space to water to land is a really neat ability. For things I don't like, it's how a lot of the time, he's drawn as this sort of blobby chungus. His body shape fluctuates a lot, but I think he looks best with the sort of tapered shape, where his body merges with the tail at the end (he does not look like this most of the time). As for Astrodactyl, I like the texturing he has across his body. It's more interesting to look at compared to how flat Jetray is a lot of the time. I think it's interesting that his wings are separate from his arms to give him a more unique dinosaur profile than Humungousaur. However, the organic jetpack thing is something that I really don't like, and I find his voice way less cool than Jetray's. At the end of the day, I'm okay on both, but don't particularly care for either of them a super duper amount.

Astrodactyl's cooler to me, his scenes are much more memorable. All of Jetray's scenes just blend together, with the exception being that one outlier hyperspace feat lol.

To be honest, I like jetRay as well as well Astrodactyl, however, as long as the former is mentioned within the show, along with other aliens that Ben 10 had rarely transformed into they haven't really been replaced at all just not used. But I do see where you're getting at seems like they have been replaced thankfully for what we know about the Omnitrix they're not gone they just haven't been used
If they bring back omniverse maybe for the road trip mentioned in the final episode they could bring him back and maybe with road trip Ben could get newer aliens

I don't fully get what's the factor that determinates which episodes has a full breakdown and which has a quick breackdown.
I used to think that it was for the Total Score but 18 is a pretty respetable number, and I'm sure that the return of Vilgax had a lower score than that.

I just realized, when azmuth and vilgax briefly wore the omnitrix, is there a human transformation? And if so, who would be the DNA sample?
Yes, human DNA is in the Omnitrix. Who the sample comes from doesn't really matter, because the Omnitrix merges the user's DNA with the species DNA to create transformations. Ben doesn't turn into copies of the aliens the samples came from, he turns into himself, but as a member of that species.
The same would be true of any alien turning into a human. They'd become a human version of themself.
