  • NOTE FROM TED: Theories discussed in this talk remain an emerging field of study which are not yet supported by sufficient scientific evidence. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Ideas that once had early scientists burnt at the stake are today accepted as the most basic facts that define our world. But heresy isn't a thing of the past - Dr. Monica Gagliano has faced criticism throughout her career for her work that pushes the boundaries of accepted science. Her pioneering work has demonstrated, for the first time, that plants emit their own ‘voices’ and detect and respond to the sounds of their environments. In this talk, Monica introduces us to her latest research project, that might be her most 'heretical' work yet.
Monica pioneered the research field of plant bioacoustics, for the first time experimentally demonstrating that plants emit their own ‘voices’ and detect and respond to the sounds of their environments. Her work has extended the concept of cognition (including perception, learning processes, memory) in plants, re-igniting the discourse on plant subjectivity and ethical and legal standing. She applies a progressive and holistic approach to science - one that is comfortable engaging at the interface between areas as diverse as ecology, physics, law, anthropology, philosophy, literature, music and the arts, indigenous wisdom and spirituality.
Monica Gagliano, PhD is a Research Associate Professor in evolutionary ecology and director of the Biological Intelligence (BI) Lab supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. Her latest project-in-the-making is a global initiative called Resonant Earth: Planetary Regeneration thru Sonic Midwifery. www.monicagagliano.com This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Ted's note regarding the reliability of this talk ("not yet supported by sufficient scientific evidence") is shameful, and demonstrates the inability of mainstream science to address the real challenges of the near future. Ridiculous.

@@clau.dioconti It's the basis of scientific research that an experiment can be replicated. In this case they have not been, even though many years have past and attempts were made.

Thank you SO MUCH for this embrace of heresy. I especially appreciate the idea of spiritual (not knowing, or gnosis) midwifery as the appropriate praxis in response to the climate crisis, which I wrote about in a viral paper endorsed by Joanna Macy back in 2014: "Planetary Hospice: Rebirthing Planet Earth." As I'd been trained at the time in Zen Hospice caregiving, "Not Knowing" was the first principle of planetary hospice caregiving. I love the idea of being invited into this "Garden of Not Knowing" by surrender, and the deep humility that is required to be okay with that in an age when scientific materialism still predominates. The Universe itself is consciousness, Gaia shares in that cognition via the "psychosphere" (M. Skelding) in which we are all embedded. She is a higher level of order, and thus a higher intelligence, which we desperately need to access in order to survive and, eventually, thrive.

I deeply love your brilliant work. As an academic researcher myself, I'm extremely disappointed by TED's choice to flag this talk as containing ideas 'not yet supported by science.' That shows ignorance of your careful research, and it also may slow the dissemination of important findings and ideas such as yours.

"We can only try". Yes, but we don't. Almost all of our problems come down to lack of knowledge, yet we invest almost nothing into learning solutions. We graduate so many young scientists, and all people have the ability to investigate, but we fail to support them and the consequence is lack of solutions to our big and small problems.

Regarding a bee's learning ability, i recently saw a very disturbing ad for a beekeeping unit that featured automatic defence protection against hornets. I am concerned because bee's have developed their own system of defence, and although it may not appear perfect, i believe it would be detrimental to all bees if they forgot how due to a human made product.
