I saw this on an episode of Liquid Television back in either '91 or '92 and was fascinated by the art and combining animation with live footage. I'm glad I still remembered the name after all these years.
I recently got a copy of the reissue of the first White Stripes lp and the name of this cartoon was etched onto the little spot between the label and the run out groove. So odd and cool! Haha.
Very cool, looks like this was a "stagger" test, as most of the takes/actions are staggers. Fun to watch, and much better than modern stuff! (Sorry Don Hertzfeldt, your stuff is cool but it can't stand up to a full studio of awesome!)
You can find this cartoon on the video "Cartoon Madness: The Fantastic Max Fleischer Cartoons" hosted by Leonard Maltin. Amazon has it used, available from several dealers.
They showed a good chunk of this cartoon a few years ago, on MTV's "Liquid Television," with a different soundtrack. Whichever way you saw this, it was some really weird stuff!
Anyone know the name of the second song? THEINKWELLIMPS left a comment identifying the first song as "Dancing Shadows" by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra and thought the second song might be the flip of the record. However the flip of the Whiteman record is a different song, "Fascinating vamp" by Nat Shilkret & his Victor Orchestra. Anyone know the second song on this?
Yes, first tune is Ernie Golden's Dancing Shadows. Great arrangement by Paul Whiteman. As per the SECOND tune...Nope. I've been trying to find it for YEARS. I searched novelty tunes of Zez Confrey, Ernie Golden and others but can't find this one. BUT I just spent the last two hours transcribing a lot of it. The first part's in Bb, the last part is in Ab. Like a lot of tunes, it's "easy"...once you learn it.
Um. Wow? I found this when I was looking at The White Stripes- The White Stripes vinyl in the light it was scratched onto it. Along with "Got to be Controversial" weird.
Yes, it wasn't outlawed until 1937. Smokers were known as "vipers" and getting high was "kicking the gong around" (see Cab Calloway). Read Mezz Mezzrow's "Really the Blues" for a fascinating journal of this particular time period with jazz and blues.
I guess this silent cartoon was an excellent, and funny interpretation from the cartoonists, concerning to the end of the world. This cartoon was made in 1927,and the end of the world itself was a theme by those years, already, but exposed into a cartoon. I really admire their imagination!! Nowadays, new cartoons are a real trash!! If the characters don't kill the others, they're not happy, and don't get any success. For God's sake!!...What the hell is that?
The Fleischer brothers are criminally underrated, the stuff they put out was quite innovative.
AGREED !!!!!!!
Eran los Adult Swim de la época 🤯👌
Thank you for pressing the self-destruct button. This world will self-destruct in three minutes.
the apocalypse has never been so cheerful!
I love how they used both animation and live action in this short. The effects are very ahead for their time.

Love that soundtrack.
The Fleischers were so surreal,I love their old stuff.
This is absolutely amazing. Man...Max Fleischer, what a talent!
This must've been a technological marvel back then.
I'm impressed, it's funny how something that is from 1928 is more innovative than today's animation, really experimental.
This short just got put in the National Film Registry this year!

Do you have a picture of this? Now I've gotta see it!
Wow, that's incredible!
Reminds me the earlier Neon Genesis Evangelion

Fits My mood.
I originally saw this short without music, as part of the "Betty Boop Follies." The soundtrack suits it.
A tale about a clown, who's dog friend brought about the end of the world!
That's not depressing is it?

The dog looks like marsupilami with a short tail.
Also does anyone else see this as political satire?
It's necessary to reconsider in 2021. Who will remind?I hope for you all or one.
cartoons were more innovative than they are now fleischer was a genius using all sorts of medium to make a cartoon what did disney do almost nothing🙂
Such cheerful music for the end of the world. XD

Wait, so that shitty little dog is responsible for 2020??

Okay... What idiot installed that lever to begin-with?
I woner if Terry Gilliam drew his inspiration from Max Fleischer.
it's all by design
Does anyone know if this short is public domain?
Neat!

‘Gong’ was cocaine. Weed was ‘reefer’.
Have you ever met that funny reefer man?
and the moral of the story is...?
