I love how SZA came back 5 years later with even more commercial success and critical acclaim than the debut. We love the longevity.
CTRL is still better.
Album was trash not even mid

I know "Good Days" was released over a year before "SOS" was released but it is a beautiful masterpiece and definitely one of the greatest songs of the 2020s so far
Didn't know why tf he didn't mention that song, it is genuinely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
@@vicmantiri6782 cus he’s already talked about it like 2 years ago lol
@AUGUST BURNS DOOM fr, I like good days but I don't really get why people love it so much

Completely agree her best song yet
"Blind" & "Ghost in the Machine" are melodic masterpieces
i don’t really like blind tbh
my two favourites along with low

I completely agree, I've been listening to those two so much
The "oooh-oooooh"s on the chorus of Ghost in the Machine are so haunting and beautiful
happy to see sza get her flowers but im still shitting my pants over fantano not loving good days
Truth! This was such a great track during the pandemic. Btw. I Hate You was also a 'meh' for hem a year ago. I guess he changed his opinion.
I prefer the original good days she changes it sometime over the last year and her voice sounds muffled and distorted the original was ethereal
@@kylarreger4016 agreed. i love the og mix. i wish i had downloaded it in high quality back then

I'm gonna hard defend F2F as a song on this album, even if it's not the most amazing pop punk cut ever. I think it's a really good reset point on the album, because with an album as slow and moody as this, it's very easy for the more casual listener to get fatigued and fall into a lull. It came at the perfect point on my first listen that I felt like my attention was slipping and it was enough of a perk up that I could easily breeze through the rest of the album. It's almost like an intermission before the second half of the album begins.
I was so surprised he put F2F as the sole least fav track, like what. Oh well their loss this track is so good
Agree! I dont think the song itself is that special (though i still like it) but hearing her shift from her R&B style to Pop Punk was kinda amazing, and revitalized me for part 2
@@MattyolaOfficial I’m not surprised. Melon hates pop punk lol.
F2F was the first pop punk cut ive heard since about 2008 that felt genuine and true to the early 00’s spirit. Agree that it came at the perfect time to spin my head around and say “whoa!” out loud when it came on
Literally the best track on the record

Blind and kill bill are my two favourites but the entire album is truly a masterpiece. SZA continues to inspire. Her music is relatable.
The Bjork sample on forgiveless is so pretty.
this is such an intimate presentation of feminine fragility. i’m living within the same spaces sza seems to have been existing in while constructing this work, and it was initially overwhelming to listen to because it felt as though she’d extracted her revelations straight from my journal. there is one consistent theme throughout the record, but the content is varied in that she provides insight into very specific headspaces a person transitions through while navigating a trauma like this. and heartbreak *is* trauma, and it *is* grieving. i feel like women often feel pressure to be on a pedestal, to be the one in control, the one being chased. she injects so much vulnerability into her writing, so much embarrassing honesty. but it’s blended with heaps of swagger and charisma. it’s representative of that moment you stop fighting your lesser self and accept that you can be strong and worthy and still feel beaten and pitiful. there is no rush to get over it and return to the more desired “bad unpressed b*tch” facade. she is very pressed lol and there is so much appeal and strength in that honesty. it’s angst and foolishness interwoven with insight and wisdom, and it is ultimately far more empowering and healing than a record that just promotes nonstop confidence and triumph. this is not just artistic growth, but spiritual growth, and i’m so happy that it exists. 10/10 for me.
I really felt that with Blind. The part where she feels embarrassed that she cant find the love she seeks within herself, thats such a specific feeling and it hurts
Wow big words!!! U must be soooo intelligent
@@johani1717 they’re not that big🙃
EXACTLY!!!! This is exactly how I thought of it. People really need to see how vulnerability and authenticity IS strength. This was so well said

Weekly track round up on 12/5/21 talking about I Hate You: "It is very spacey and bland" - Fantano. Now it is one of the fave tracks. IMO: Shirt is one of the best cuts, Low deserved more recognition and I don't think Conceited was even mentioned. Still a good review and I agree with the score. The fact that we are getting a deluxe is gonna make this album like 1 1/2 hours or more.
This was the last release I was looking forward to for this year, unless something surprisingly drops unannounced. I didn't even know it dropped until the day after bc I'd been waiting so long. I enjoyed Ctrl a lot, but paradoxically I never felt like it had many standout tracks, and also didn't feel strong overall. SOS is a totally different story for me. I even love several of the tracks you criticized most heavily. I also was not expecting the Phoebe collab to work as well as it does.
I've been loving the album so much that I'm coming back to it multiple times a day. I feel pretty confident saying it's my fav mainstream release of the year, barring possibly JID if you'd consider him mainstream. I agree with the rating, there's enough variety and probably over half the tracklist makes me feel like this is an album that I could be coming back to and singing along with for years. I also love the cover art
In my opinion I felt like Ctrl had so many standout tracks, but that’s probably because of the emotional history I have with that album.
While I do agree that it is an incredible piece of work, and will see myself coming back to it in the future, Ctrl is the better album out of the two. I still listen to it beginning to end after all these years.
Excited to listen to the album. Also. Do you have any guides to listening to more obscure music styles like music? I think that would be really cool
Love this album so much, SZA always feeds 😍 also just a heads up Melon, the last track is actually called ForgiveLESS (I thought it was Forgiveness for the first couple of days too) but I think the actual title is more fitting to the song.
Personally, I still find CTRL more focused and more appealing compared to SOS. Perhaps I'll find listening to SOS more enjoyable in the coming months.
@SpaceCadet speak for yourself. i disagree
I won't lie I had a few skips in this cause I don't care for albums that blend too much. Like some of the songs were so somber I sometimes wondered if I was on the next song yet. But despite that I still see the beauty in it. It's a laid back and heart opening album. But I still think ctrl sealed my soul
@@NeuroticBaddie For me CTRL 10/10 SOS 8.5/10 Both records are amazing but CTRL is perfect length, consistent, and overall a good listen.
I actually thought Don Toliver was pretty good on his track it just felt like it was building to something that never happened. If his part of the song acted as more of a bridge to a more prominent chorus from himself or the two of them it could have been amazing
Why's no one talking about nobody gets me? I felt like the lyrics of that song were the most vulnerable, and so so real and raw. There was pain in her voice man!
Very surprised you didn't go over Nobody Gets Me, which in my opinion is the strongest written and performed song on the record. So emotional, so raw.
Definitely my favourite of the album
I wholly agree
i agree!!!!
100% this felt like the best showcase for her voice too with only having the acoustic backing
I mean the song is about her ex so that would make sense
loved this album for the most part.Further solidified my opinions about her. definitely proved why she my favorite female artist rn. FAV TRACKS: FAR, BLIND, SNOOZE, seek and destroy, Kill bill. I love the melody of GHOST 10/10 if maybe Phoebe wasn't there but maybe my opinion changes on Phoebes part with time!
I love this album and Phoebe Bridgers is my fav feature in this, also its my first time hearing both of them lol
This album was so good, straight vibes and the production was so smooth. Her voice is as amazing as ever and the record as a whole hits in all the right places
Its crazy because I loved this album from the first listen. Unlike her debut album where I had to listen a few times.
Also it doesn't feel bloated despite having 20 songs on it.
SZA is phenomenal. So extremely heavy on sass in a way that no one else even tries to do seriously
love this album, glad u like it too!! its a light 9 for me, but anywhere on that yellow flannel spectrum is hella deserved
Was waiting anxiously for this video 😬
I was writing my review right now wondering when this would come out... Great!
It's times like these I think Spotify Wrapped should be at the end of the year because the amount of times I've listened to this album is :)
so many favorite tracks in the caption , really enjoyed this one too
Surprised you didn't mention the sample on the last track from Hidden Place, since we know you LOVE Vespertine
what a year for long albums. between this, kendrick, beach house, big thief, etc... there's been a lot of really fantastic double albums
I feel like the double album helps emphasise the ocean vast theme.
I’m glad there’s a new album you enjoy listening to, Anthony 🙂👍
I was already a fan of hers for quite a few years before I was finally able to see her live at Day N Vegas. She had just gotten back from opening for Travis Scott during that tragic incident at Astroworld and I will always remember how mindful she was of the audience the entire time making sure everyone had enough space and was safe. It was clear she was shaken by what had happened and yet she still poured her heart into an incredible performance, she's a legend in the making.
Not going to lie, I skipped to the rating on this just to see what you gave it. I agree that there are some weak points on the album, but the thing is, the album is so good that even the weak points are super strong. I honestly forget that she is as successful as she is because a lot of people I talk to don't seem to know who she is. I love how there is a lot of versatility shown in an R&B album. She is the best.

Glad I’m not the only one sounded super good to me this is like the third review I’ve seen where someone didn’t like it much but I thought was pretty authentic and sounded good but that’s just me personally
No
I’m surprised you rated it this high tbh. I didn’t hate it but I feel like CTRL has much more diversity in terms of sound
It's also a lot more concise. This album is just too long to hold my attention all the way through, unfortunately :/
Ctrl is definitely a better album over all. It seemed so new and completely fresh. Some of the songs on this album feel almost stereotypical and familiar. Songs that many other rnb singers could sing. Ctrl is very uniquely sza tho
Fantano is a liberal & a black woman empowerer so he's never gonna rate them too badly

Great album. I think CTRL is more focused overall, but SOS shows more versatility in her performances. Love the album and I love her cause she seems like a chill person lol.
Love your reviews. Now that we got the pleasantries out of the way…RM Indigo Album Review…when?
I love love love SZA, but I still have CTRL on heavy rotation and feel it has no-skip value because of the flow and diversity of sound, not to mention (speaking for myself) the ultimate coming-of-age album for millennials/20 somethings at the time. SOS I loved Kill Bill but the rest of it hasn’t stuck for me yet.. I’m not sure if it’s the length or the lack of relatability but I’m not feeling it as heavy! Maybe I need a few more play throughs but I honestly would rather listen to CTRL. I’m glad SZA is FINALLY getting some damn flowers tho!! 💐
Imo this album is only getting more critical acclaim than Ctrl bc critics took her less seriously then than they do now. Ctrl is far superior, but most critics missed that when it came out. Now they finally “get” SZA and are praising her accordingly.
TOTALLY AGREE! And the same thing happened with some Lana Del Rey's albuns
Agreed
well said
I prefer this album undoubtedly. Her performances are superior on this record.
they were sitting waiting for the chance to jump on the clout wagon.

I hope SZA's commerical success after returning from such a long break inspires Frank Ocean that he can do the same

SZA, Tyler, Ken Carson are ppl that I’m glad have blown up the past few years
Honestly this is one of the best records of the year. The lyrics, beats, and choices of production are gorgeous. Always been a Stan for the queen haha but the work she put in on this is dumb good
I was mind blown by how well Phoebe and SZA fit together, my song of the year FOR SURE

@bigfishh booo
I'm glad you mentioned open arms I think it was a masterpiece of a song and top 3 on the album and I think it deserves more attention
You hit my own thoughts right on the mark. Can see her growth as an artist.💜
This album hits even harder if you in your own way, relate to this album. This album is for the crazy ex girlfriend who’s trying to move on but she’s going insane after the breakup and is having second thoughts. I’d assume someone like this initiated the breakup and it’s clear overtime she must have given the amount of times shes second guessed herself. My ex and I both listened to this album together when it dropped and now we’re literally back together. If you’re slightly crazy and recently single, then this album is going to affect you in a very interesting way. The beats, lyrics, Melodie’s, adlibs and echoes all factor into the vibe. If you get it you get it. If you don’t, the album isn’t meant for you since you can’t relate 🙂
so true
fym the album isn't meant for you if u cant relate its not my fault i cant relate let me enjoy this shit anyway 💀😭

I KNOW RIGHT I LOVED THIS SONG
I wish i was enjoying this album as much as everybody else, but the second half killed a lot of the momentum for me. Still love a lot of the tracks on here, but i’m lukewarm overall on the whole project. Hopefully, it’ll grow on me.
the outri forgiveness has a björk hidden place sample. and special is a part two of of normal girl.
So glad SZA made it in time for a review! Hope she makes the lists! The pop-punk track was was a suprise for me too. As much as I didn't like it, it made me feel like SZA and I grew up listening to the same kind of music so I was still in to it.
I agree F2F was horrifying. Up until then I was like damn she’s batting 100. ‘Nobody gets me’ had me worried about the album’s direction but luckily after that it picked up again
Whaaat Good Days isn't in your best tracks? To each their own but I think it's one of her best tracks, phenomenal production.
I think Don Toliver really spoke on his feature. He brought the theme of openness and pondering of if they were being used.

The album grows, I first I wanted to throw the middle portion of the album away but it even those are quality and catchy. I still think the album is a bit too long and she
