    I live about 65 miles west of Houston. You are so lucky because Houston was built on some of the best farm land around. We have sand and clay. Thank you for the video. I'm going to try this. I also like that you don't wear gloves. I always forget but my hand still get dirty when wearing them.

      I feel your pain. No sand for my soil. But pretty much 100% clay.

    Really great video!
    You gave a lot of really great information in a small amount of time. That’s something I truly struggle with. The other thing I struggle with is growing decent garlic!
    Did you plant in the fall of 22, and if so, how well did yours do after the early freeze we had and then the strange temperature shifts in the spring?
    I was pretty excited. I was gonna have quite a Garlic harvest this spring, but I found the strange temperatures either stunted the garlic or just didn’t grow well.
    I always love to see gardeners near me, because we can always keep learning!

      Yes, I also grew in fall of 2022. I had a similar struggle because of the erratic cold weather and the much hotter weather in early spring that Houston experienced. Garlic prefers more evenly cool weather, and not only were the shifts in temperature challenging to navigate, but the total quantity of cooler days was too short for a great harvest. I still was able to harvest about half the weight of garlic I originally expected. This fall, I'm trying again, and if we have a consistently cool winter, all the winter crops should be more successful!

    This is great information. I tried garlic a couple of years ago and was a total failure. I think I planted them too deep. Thank you!

    With the USDA map update i am now a zone 10A which is crazy to me, but Garlic is a reliable crop here provided you dont get a ton of rain or your going to get Rust, I have nearly perfect yearly conditions for Rust, 50-70 degree average daytime temps, can go higher but not that often and 70-100% humidity every day.

    So about what month do we harvest here? I planted some garlic in October and it's giving me signs it is ready, but I'm nervous it is too soon.

      I don't think I've ever harvested before the first week in May. It's tricky because the timing may be slightly different based on your variety, when you planted, or our inconsistent weather. I had a horrible crop last year (1 year after this video was filmed) with low yields. This year I purchased garlic from grower so I could have plants better suited for the heat, and in about 7 days I will start testing their size by simply removing some soil around the bulb without disturbing the roots to look at the size. The bulb should be large, and you can often see lobes if the cloves have formed in the bulb as they are supposed to. the cloves are the last part to develop, so if you harvest too soon, then the cloves won't even be developed yet.

    When did you start the garlic?

    • @TurnYourHeadandScoff
      @TurnYourHeadandScoff  Год назад +2

      I planted the first week in November 2021 and harvested about 6 months later. In other climates garlic can't be harvested as quickly or the tops may freeze if they start growing before winter. I've found that it gets too hot in Houston not to start early, and it is sometimes too rainy in May. So, this schedule has been perfect for me.

    What date is “the fall” in Houston? For harvesting….I didn’t get any bolting. What’s up?

    • @TurnYourHeadandScoff
      @TurnYourHeadandScoff  2 года назад +1

      Fall is a temperature range that is supposed to cool into the dormant period of winter. In Houston it's tricky because we do start to cool below 80 degrees into our "fall" season which seems to be at some time in October, but then the temperature jumps around in the fall temperature range which confuses plants. Plants will bolt if they are confused by the weather warming quickly. I believe my bolting episode was posted before this garlic episode. If your cool season plants are started in spring (as opposed to mine which were started October through January), then they may not be old enough to bolt. I'm not 100% sure if I answered your question, so just clarify if not!

    You have to be careful with garlic where I live cause the bottom leaves turn yellow and die on you and it can happen way before its ready and I have seen people pull up garlic way early because of it.
