Thank you for diving into Fog Cloud vs Darkness a little bit. Basically there is a complex interaction between these two spells, various Darkvisions, and the Hide mechanic. I would love to see an even more granular breakdown. This is an area of the game that I continue to be confused with lol. There is a ton of misinformation online based on older patches and assumed mechanics and DND editions. So if I understand,
    - both Fog Cloud and Darkness create a zone which is completely *unlit* and Blinds creatures within.
-this means only creatures with Darkvision can see into these zones, provided they are within range of their type of Darkvision (normal vs Superior)
    - Hiding in these zones against enemies without Darkvision does not trigger Stealth checks, because the enemies vision cones do not penetrate the zone and so act as though they are facing away from you
    - Attacking non-DV enemies from these zones gives you the "Attacking from shadows" buff which gives Advantage on attack rolls
    - Attacking DV enemies from these zones while outside their Darkvision radius gives "Attacking from shadows"
    - Even though Darkness is Magical, enemies with regular Darkvision will force you to make stealth checks if you are within their Darkvision range (??? seriously ???)
    - Darkness blocks *Line of Sight*, meaning enemies cannot shoot into or out of it (unless they have Devil's Sight).
    - Fog Cloud does *not* block Line of Sight; you can shoot into it and out of it (but Devil's Sight *does not work* with Fog Cloud when *INSIDE* it; you will be Blinded)
The best shorthand I've seen for how to use these spells is that Fog Cloud is best used offensively against enemies by casting it on them, as an AOE Blind. Darkness is best used defensively by Devil's Sight Warlocks, who receive no debuffs from it but get Attack from Shadows.

    • @Cephalopocalypse
      @Cephalopocalypse  6 дней назад +23

Yep exactly. And just to add onto that:
      - enemies with normal darkvision still prevent the "Attacking from Shadows" buff even if you're attacking from magical darkness (provided you're in range of their darkvision)
      - some enemies have Secret Unlisted Darkvision (seen here with Mizora) - this darkvision is 60ft range, and can exist ALONGSIDE normal 40ft darkvision, so even if you're out of range of the darkvision the game says they have, some enemies will still be able to see you. I don't know if the full list of creatures with this ability is available anywhere - the wiki is usually good for this kind of thing but doesn't list it for Mizora.
I pinned this comment because it's a really useful summary!

@@Cephalopocalypse Honestly, this video helped so much, but also solidified my view that Fog Cloud is one of the worst spells in BG3 and the most nerfed spell from tabletop. As a big Druid fan no spell gave me such a headache trying to make sense of it as Fog Cloud. Plus it completely ignores the Z axis in a game with lots of verticality, although a LOT of AoE spells suffer from that...

hi Ceph Thanks for this! you used the term “attacking from (with) shadows buff” which is not a term i’ve found in the wiki or elsewhere online. I assume you mean the mechanic that if you attack an enemy while they cannot see you then you get advantage as if you are Hiding or Invisible. So far as I can tell there is nothing in writing about that buff. Is there something in game about that? Or am i missing something online?

Confused makes affected creatures roll a d20 flat check (no modifiers) against a static DC of 11 every turn. If they fail that roll, they get the confused stupor, which is pretty much a stun. If they succeed, then the cryptic AiArchetypeOverride(madness,99) effect happens.

Interesting! It's funny that they went with "roll a save against a fixed DC" for that and wild magic rather than some other way of implementing random chance
My experience is that enemies act normally and just attack my party *way* more than 1/5 of the time, which is what you'd expect from the tabletop rules, so my suspicion is that function is broken in some way (that we of course can't see)

@@Cephalopocalypse @geftsu The Madness archetype is defined in a file called, sensibly enough, madness.txt. It basically instructs the victim to value damaging/healing/debuffing enemies allies self and neutrals (yellow border) equally, and some thing like never pick up items, not prioritize killing a target, not care about AOEs or hit chance, and not care about breaking concentration. The only thing is does prioritize is to attack targets the creature can see.
Since *most* enemies in the game are basically melee damage sponges the result is usually they'll just attack whatever's closest to them.

Saved me a lot of time figuring out what to give who rather than "This looks good" without knowing that damage modifiers + effects will change damage from an average of say 16 to 22. Make you gear properly rather than "trickle down" gear by getting what looks the best for one character then giving the second best to the next and so on.. Sometimes the "worse" looking gear actually performs a lot better for your build. It's a mistake I saw my friends do after I realised I should be checking the damage calcs to equip a character which adds such a fun element to the game. I think on one of the rat hoard fights in the game like under the tavern you could get a large enough sample size to see if it really is a 20% chance for them to attack the nearest creature. You'd be able to hit every single rat, and they would all fail the saving throw, then just count what they all do. I always thought that it was just a 1/4 for them to act as normal, and a 1/4 for everything else too.

Aw I was hoping to see the messed up save dc tooltips very briefly touched on here with counterspell. It’s so annoying that spells that target a specific saving throw will show the spell save dc for that particular attribute, which is wrong. Like for instance if I’m running a Sorcerer my spell dc will calculate with CHA but for some reason when I check the save dc for hypnotic pattern it isn’t giving me an accurate save dc because it’ll show what my dc would be if I was using WIS. Whereas banishment will show an accurate save dc because it is targeting CHA saves. This honestly really messed up my perception of what attributes I should be putting points into in a bunch of my runs because I always thought that it’d be beneficial to bump up WIS higher than I would otherwise just to eek out an extra +1 to the save DC.
Also I hate confusion. It’s recommended by a lot of people on threads and online as being a top tier control spell and while it’s certainly not bad I think it’s vastly outclassed by hypnotic pattern (specially when casted with careful metamagic) and slow. Both those spells use up a lower level slot and give you useful debuffs and you know what will happen. Confusion honestly feels like the enemies act normally a solid 65% of the time. Hypnotic pattern has always been the best value control spell so comparing it to confusion may not be fair but slow is so underrated in BG3. Slow works on almost everything, has a targeting mechanic up to 6 which ensures you won’t debuff your teammates and has like 6 different debuffs which are very useful when they all effect the same enemies together.

It rolls your bardic inspiration die, and it *reduces* the enemy's attack roll, ability check (i.e. Shove), or saving throw by that much.
I think the description actually does include the following: "It receives a -1d6 penalty to Attack roll, Ability check, or Saving throw. "

The game will prompt you when to use cutting words. Instead of buffing an ally, you subtract from an enemy’s roll. So like, if someone attacks karlach and they need a 15 and rolled a 16, you can use cutting words to subtract a d6 from the roll, possibly making them miss.

@@LB-yg2br Thanks, any build video I have seen use Lore Bard never explain what it does just to take it and the level up tooltip as I put, is not very helpful so thanks for letting me know. Might have to try a Lore Bard now, never was interested before.

  • @donatodiniccolodibettobardi842

It reallt doesn't make sense that any form of Darkvision can pierce through a fog cloud. Darkvision allows you to see in the dark as if it is dimly lit, a fog cloud is just a summon cloud of water particles, that are so dense you can't see through. Same with smoke. Same with any non-transparent object. Darkvision doesn't allow you to see through walls, right?
In fact in one of the earlier editions there was a supernatural ability to see through that kind of thing: fog, smoke, etc.
Another thing I didn't get is a certain areal spell interactions dispersing the darkness "cloud". Magical darkness is not a gas, not an object, it shouldn't interact with anything other than dispel magic or certain light spells.

Amazing how much the Placebo Effect applies to games. Video games are so massive in size and code that I doubt any ability ever does what it says. This is especially true in Borderlands 2, a game from 10 years ago. If games were struggling to work properly then, imagine a modern release like BG3

I was so confused when I read the Destructive Wrath tooltip that I never actually cast it on the only character I've ever had learn it. Especially as they were a Phalar Aluve build so usually weren't too far from all of their allies, I didn't fancy blowing up all my allies 😂

another false tooltip is when shoving, ive had several times i go to shove an enemy and it will show a high % chance of success but when it fails and i check the log it says the shove DC was 0, there are other instances where the game will show a DC: 0 and still fail but i cant recall them at the momment
also at 23:16 for those that are unaware of calculation orders in math because the damage shows "1d8+18/2" because there is no "( )" around the "1d8+18" part then the "/2" should only be applied to the "18" not the "1d8" part

German tool tips are pretty unusable sometimes, especially on an early Ring - as if it has been AI translation. We have the same word for throw and roll - werfen. So every time a tooltip says you get a bonus on a "Wurf" (roll or throw) you actually don't know if it's helpful or not. I allways thought Ring of throwing (flinging?) was op, till i read it's a throwbarian item, and still don't really know what shapeshifter ring does (is there a form i can throw things?, can i throw as a bear?) Even translation of easy things as safe in wisdom safe went in a horrible unreadable direction - or Rettungswurf (saving throw) was too long as a word for them 😑 so they took Spielstand (game file, i think from saving file) but wisdom game file makes just no sense..

    • @Cephalopocalypse
      @Cephalopocalypse  6 дней назад +4

You want to counter a spell using a slot of equal level or higher than the spell you're trying to counter. That counters it 100% - so if you want to counter a Wall of Fire, use a level 4 slot. If you use a lower level slot, there's still a chance of countering it based on the check, but it's inconsistent so it's better to always try to use the right spell slot and make it a guarantee.

I'm not sure if Devil's Sight is even properly working at the moment. I had a recent scenario happen where Wyll (with Devil's sight) was in range but could not target an enemy in a small cloud of darkness. This was in the House of Grief, where those little darkness patches appear on death, so maybe they function differently? But that also seems like a bug then, because why would those patches work any different? It's weird lol

I'm interested in this, too. My 2nd run, my Sorlock would stand in Darkness, picking off enemies and was untargetable (Tactician). However, my last run (Honour Mode) my Lockadin would stand in Darkness and nearly all ranged attackers could attack into Darkness. This made no sense to me. I (assumed) it was an Honour Mode rule.

@@janahrens4693 I think my first run took 320 something hours to complete. My second full game was around 260 something.
The time and size are not of equal measure.
This game is so small, I had to immediately encore it. And I want more still.
I can't wait until September, when we find out what "full mod support" actually means. I hope it means we can make whole new games with the mod support they roll out. New quests, new maps, new environments, new effects, new characters, new equipment, and spells. And I hope we just get absolutely flooded with quality modded content.
But that is all feelings. Blatant fantasy indulgence. When you let your feelings run away from you you create false images.
