"Lazy" is 9/10 times a terrible criticism anyway. So many people mistakenly identify shortcuts for laziness when that's far from the case. So many industries prioritize working smart> working hard. We don't have time in these industries to do everything we want to do, so we have to find ways to release a project on time by any means possible. We rely on shortcuts, cheap techniques, etc. to get the job done. You can see this done with books, animations, video games, and a lot more. These are professional fields and you see them taking the "lazy" route, not because the people working are lazy, but because you only have so much time and money to make something happen. This is so standard it's not considered laziness, but rather a smart technique to make sure that everyone meets their deadlines. It requires prioritizing in order to push out content in a timely manner. So to see people levying this criticism at young animators frustrates me. As you said, they're one person trying to push out content knowing that they do not have the man power and resources to make that big project that they want to make. Of course, it's always admirable when one person pushes through and makes their big project a reality, but we can't expect that from everyone. Sometimes it's much smarter to realize what your limits are--and learning how to shortcut effectively to make money, push out projects or product people can enjoy, while learning and honing your skill is far from lazy. It's working smart. And everyone, especially those looking to work in a professional field, needs to know how to do it.
I feel like we shouldn't put off calling something lazy altogether as although yes, these techniques can be used as a shortcut, most people don't seem to take advantage of what they can do using that. For example I don't consider all tweening animation memes to be lazy as it can look really good and almost like frame by frame, but when people do a head bopping loop with one or two expression changes that's when it should be considered lazy unless most of the effort went into somewhere else. Short cuts aren't always a good thing and if abused can impact the quality of the work overall. We shouldn't let people especially young learning animators think that taking the shorter route is always ok as if they don't understand how it can affect the quality of their work, their learning can be stunted. The difference between a learning animator and the industry is that people in the industry have experience in where these shortcuts work and where they don't. Yes, it is important to learn where these shortcuts can be used but if something is one big shortcut it shouldn't be praised. I'm not saying we should harass and bully creators but instead point them towards how they can use these short cuts effectively while also producing nice, quality work.
People who say tweening is lazy/isn't animation really annoy me.. Tweening might not take as much time as frame by frame, but it still takes plenty of time especially if you want it to look good.
Animation is defined as an illusion of movement. Tweening has the exact affect to be an illusion of movement. Tweening is in fact a form of animation, as simple and plain looking as it might seem, it is extremely useful for 1 week or shorter map part time limits, along with animation memes that would need to be done a lot faster, so tweening is the key to that. People just need to take the time and realise that animation is not just frame by frame drawing and then judge people for doing a much for simple easy method that can work for that type of person. In my opinion, it’s like animation discrimination because doing tweening suddenly turns you into a slob and just “Someone who cannot actually animate”. But do remember, be careful on how you use that time. Not everything with hard work can always be good. Many good animation artists have spent ages making an animation. But they realise that the way it turns into is not correct and unfortunately need to scrap. And as much as I support the Hard Work Opinion, there are some limits. I’ve seen many people make racist and insulting content, and when people try to stop it, their excuse will be: “I put pure effort in this. All my hard work? You just can’t appreciate jealous kid.” I’m not saying that it’s bad to say that people take their time and effort to make good things, I’m simply pointing out that the excuse gets to a point where it’s used for the wrong way. Feel free to criticise me, it’s better to read your comments than read the crappy dirty books our school stuffed in shelves in that dusty library. Please, give me something to read.
@@lycheedragoncookie2826 The thought and effort put into this comment to adequately get ur point across is truly admirable :D. Also, yh, you raise some good points 👏 .
Ikr- I remember attempting to make a lil’ PMV and I was trying to tween the ears and they did a flipping Cartwheel. In that same PMV there was a glitch with the background and the way I fixed it made things extra hard, for example that time where the character went to hide behind the back ground-
I was always under the impression that animation memes were mostly meant for beginners, (relatively) short projects where people could practice tweens, run cycles and what not. Not to mention where they could add their own little twist and stretch their creativity.
omg the idea of patchwind creating a game in her mind is so creative and funny What I really like seeing in animation memes is conveying a story or personality in a character. It gives a window to the viewer about the creator's world of their characters in creative ways, and all of yours do that amazingly well
I totally agree with a lot of your thoughts on how "lazy" they are!! I've been working on a PMV between school for the past 3 months and it's only half finished. It's to a beautiful but rather long song and I'm sooo excited to finish it but it takes me at least 30 minutes for each frame, and that's because I'm cutting corners by making it sketchy and have a 3 colour palette! I'm maybe 20 frames in and I have to tell a massive story and oh BOY! I've never drawn a lot of what I'm doing in it. I'm super excited to finish it because it's so important to me, but it's taking forever. ;-; Art is time consuming! Please at least acknowledge that! Low frames =/= lazy. Trust me, there are lazy animation memes. But low frames don't immediately mean that.
Whenever people say twening/limited animation is lazy I just look at them like "what?" I really don't care and if done well both can be very interesting to watch and hard to make. As someone who has expirmented with flip a clip I know how hard it can be to draw 40 stick figures never mind full poses.
How could someone EVER call THAT lazy???? No joke, tried animation, and gave up after only 3 drawings. It was just so much that I couldn't push myself to do. Props to literally anyone who can push out any sort of animation, whether good, bad, detailed, or not. It's hard.
I've done a few animation memes, only one of them being relatively fluid... considering I've done all but one of them using MS Paint and 2010 PowerPoint, I feel proud of myself!

even if my area isn't animation, rather just digital art in general, this was still very motivating in regards to my own projects i've been dreaming of! 🌟 i've been in quite a bit of a rut, i still love and enjoy doing art, but life has been... super busy. so i haven't done much! and i tend to get overly focused on the 'everything must be overly detailed and perfect' attitude. since one of my projects is - hopefully! - an illustrated novel type story with a heavy amount of player character customization and other character sprites... there is so much work to be done. and that isn't even counting coding, design work, backgrounds and more. aaaaghhh. thank you for the motivation, and the reminder to make things less problematic for myself to consider my own time and enjoyment when it comes to cutting corners... those that don't have any idea about the lengthy process behind creating tend to be so demanding and disrespectful of the one doing all the hard work. and hey, cheers to any future animations! can't wait for more! 💖
god yeah i adore animation memes, plus the more '''''lazy'''' ones are super beginner friendly that give me inspiration to try out a few simple animations myself, i'd love to do more in the future because theyre just, so interesting and fun and good practice especially for beginners like myself
bless this video im not an animator myself nor have i ever made a meme but i see this all the time and it bothers me a lot. it's nice to see someone touch on this topic and explain why tweening and such isn't lazy. Personally I could never figure how to even just do that, so I admire anyone who can make an animation meme tbh.
I have some questions about animation memes. It is safe to make and post them if I my channel is my source of income? Can it result in getting a copyright strike and having channel deleted? Can memes even be monetized or should they stay ad free?
The only thing I don't like about Animation Memes is that the same frames repeat for like a minute over and over with no change. One animation meme I have liked is that Pink Pearl of "Why Love Me" because while it does repeats, you notice the colors switch from pink to monochrome. Changes in repeats is what I find that would stand out and seen as a bit unique in the crowd. I'm not too big on the choice of animation of "Perfect," BUT I can easily understand the context and the context you have explained. 3/28 Edit: I felt bothered from watching the whole video for the past few days because of how arrogant-sounded to me like you have to know how to animate to give an opinion about it. "Do you know how long it takes to do all this stuff?" Very long but someone can be lazy while doing it for a long time. The same phrase can be said when defending the game E.T., who was known as "one of the worst games ever" and among the rushed and sub-par over saturated games that contributed to the industry's crash back then. "You opinions are invalid." Are they though? I bet the huge portion of legitimate movie critics don't even know how good movie production works. Are my opinions invalid when I criticize how arrogant someone sounds? Animation can be a great thing to take pride in, but learning about animation doesn't make you any better with arrogance. Yes, of course there are gonna be people who give stupid and unhelpful "criticism." But even people who know how to animate can slam another person for jagged animation, not just people who don't. I never understood how tweening is NOT animation when it literally portrays an illusion of movement. Isn't that what animation IS? And illusion of movement? I think when it comes to laziness. I think context should be applied or explained. Standards are higher nowadays because people know they can do better. People have potential, and people can be easily disappointed, but is it smart to tell them "tough shit" if they were supporting you when they give criticism? What if your people supporting do know about animation but don't animate? Limited animation may have saved the industry BACK THEN, but standards are higher now. Don't use the past as an excuse. Your own personal artistic intentions should matter more. Btw, I just thought of something, are you thinking of making a short animation that is scary-looking in horror, or something like candy gore, edgy or not?
Okay, I don't know what exactly you're trying to say, but let me put it like this: Look at it this way. I made "Perfect" the way I did because that WAS my vision for it. That how *I* wanted it done. For me. I shared it online with others and you can either enjoy it as is, or not. That's up to you. But I didn't make it for you. I made it for me. So telling me that you didn't like this or that about it doesn't do either of us any good. Cause I didn't make it for you. If you would like to change that please feel free to put your money where your mouth is and pay for me to have the time to dedicate to a project that suits your tastes. There's a difference between a TEAM making a PRODUCT for consumers to buy vs me making content I want to make and sharing it online. You can call out the team for making a bad product for consumers, you can call what they did with their time lazy. They didn't do their jobs right. I think people making art in their free time of something they wanted shouldn't be held to the same standard. Also, animators get a LOT, A LOT of unhelpful criticism. I am only targeting those groups of people. If you have a critique that just boils down to "I think you should have spent more of your free time on this mortal coil making this to MY liking" then yeah, your opinion is invalid and I'm not going to consider it. It just goes in the trash. I already know that spending more time on something would probably make it better, but I don't always have time for that. It's good your critical eye can see something, but that's not helpful to me. That's why in my own film critiques on my channel, I don't address the makers of the films. I'm not critiquing them. They got better people they know who can help them and don't need my dumb opinion. I do critique to help my own understanding and because it's fun, but I don't think for a minute that any person working on a movie I've talked about should take my words as valid criticism they should listen to. Critics are helpful to artists, but if an artist has to learn how to navigate what criticism is worth looking into and what isn't, otherwise they can't create anything.
the floor is lava meme could be an actual game it's just so good! i love your artwork it's always my go-to inspiration for warriors characters back in 2011 i had a character called wildstar i renamed her wild herb made her simpler and now she is perfect i still wouldn't use her though cause i have other ocs that i use and btw happy thanksgiving!!! hope you and everyone else have a nice day today with someone that matters whether it be yourself your pet or family♥
Shame on anyone who hates on limited animation memes. Sometimes people don't really understand how much effort it takes to make these animations. Some people don't appreciate the time that it takes. I know that they deserve their own opinion, but still. Putting down the animators is just not something that you should do. If you think that taking shortcuts it "lazy", then you should try making an animation. Trust me, making a 1 minute, smooth animation with stick figures takes at least an hour. Saying that limited animation is "lazy" is like saying that smear frames are "lazy", and smear frames are extremely difficult to make. I just wanted to share my opinion on this and not hurt anyone's feelings.
Drawing a single drawing, colored and shaded (and if it's fullbody and has a background), usually takes me 1-5 hours so doing a animation meme that's fully colored, would take me a long while.
Hey, just curious, what do version of toon boom do you use, Harmony Essentials, Harmony Advanced or Harmony Premium? Is essentials just fine? Thank you
Me and a friend about animation: Friend: Ravenhild, if you have to choose between a bad animation with good story against a perfect animation with a bad story, which one would you have chosen? Me: Why can't I get both?
Tennelle I have question What animation app should I use for iPad? Because FlipAClip it just sucks for my ideas of animation ideas and for shaking and flashing I don't have that ability on FlipaClip. So just a question what animation app should I use for iPad. Btw if you like edgy stuff you should check out CountryHumans
Jesus, I take HOURS on one art piece. I’ve animated once or twice, but as a perfectionist it takes even longer than average animators take. I don’t have enough patience for animating, no less art in general. It’s mostly just a stress reliever. The fact that people aren’t grateful others are even animating is bs. It’s extremely rude, because us artist take hours a frame. It’s not being lazy moving an image across the screen, sometimes those people just like the style, or just don’t have time to go all out. It’s shameful people aren’t appreciative of animation.
I really do hate it when people say tweeting isn't animation and it's lazy. As a person whose kinda new to animation, the first time I tweeted it two days while I was rushing. The second time I animated I tried a bit of frame by frame and I stayed up till 2am to finish it. They where both M.A.P parts so they were short but I'm very proud of them and I'm still working on loads more (they are up on my channel if anyone is curious)
@TennelleFlowers, for a future video, think you could share some other handy art shortcuts you like using? I think it would help dispel the stigma against work streamlining if there were more videos like that.
I get the craving to do animation, but then I remember that it took me 3.5 hours just to line one comm yesterday, and that the last time I did animation was with an old copy of the original Jasc AS in 2004.

Okay, I don't know what exactly you're trying to say, but let me put it like this:
Look at it this way.

Frickin KFC advert got me in the middle of all this amazingness.
Thanks for making this it really inspired me to pick back up some projects that i dropped
7:47 I love patchwind's face
I WANT TO PLAY THE PATCHWIND GAME SO MUCH NOW SHE'S ADORABLE
The sketchy noise in the background during the theme song hurt my ears through headphones what
Hey! Can someone please tell me how I can read Starclan battles? I am interested in reading it, but can’t really find it.
You are my insperation. Along with Blixmi and Moomkitti.
I love patch winds face at 5:10
This is so cool! I loved your animation memes and this was PURRfect!~
The beginning drawing sounds made me have an ear-gasm.
Drawing a single drawing, colored and shaded (and if it's fullbody and has a background), usually takes me 1-5 hours so doing a animation meme that's fully colored, would take me a long while.
Omg Yas!!!! I love this series/show!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey, just curious, what do version of toon boom do you use, Harmony Essentials, Harmony Advanced or Harmony Premium? Is essentials just fine? Thank you
Your animation memes are beautiful Tenelle!!
I would love to see her floor is lava animation in a actual game

Have you heard of The Panic Room Meme?
Side note as a beginning artist, I love watching your videos and stay awesome!
I just finished an animation meme. I think it was my 8th one QuQ
Me and a friend about animation:
Friend: Ravenhild, if you have to choose between a bad animation with good story
against a perfect animation with a bad story,
which one would you have chosen?
Me: Why can't I get both?
At 5:40, She laughed right as patchwind fell off a cliff.
Tennelle I have question
What animation app should I use for iPad?
I can already tell this gon be a good vie even tho I haven't watched it lol
You have a new INTROOO! LUVVIT!
videos always get uploaded when I'm ASLEEP SCREEEEE
Finnaly someone says something about it thank you
Yes ive been looking for these. Also just saying you have your own Amino on well Amino!
AWWW YEAH ANIMATIO- oh got carried away there -.-
I really do hate it when people say tweeting isn't animation and it's lazy.
0:09 - a character from 'The Dragon Prince'
remember, animation memes are for fun
i'm quite saddened at the fact that fun is not allowed in this society when you think about it
Tffffffffffffff WHY DO YOU ALWAYS KNOW WHAT I NEED IN MY LIFE
It took me like three hours to make a single drawing of two cats in water.
Haven't watched but I'm VERY excited
I LOVE THIS 💙💖💙💖
pkrussl doesn’t have rights :)
@TennelleFlowers, for a future video, think you could share some other handy art shortcuts you like using? I think it would help dispel the stigma against work streamlining if there were more videos like that.
YAY ANOTHER EPISODE!!!
I love this show!
I get the craving to do animation, but then I remember that it took me 3.5 hours just to line one comm yesterday, and that the last time I did animation was with an old copy of the original Jasc AS in 2004.
