Great Video - When picking colors, you say it has to be close, when in reality it doesn't. Make it yours, if you are using stash and you don't have a color that closely matches, use another color you like that will work. Colorado Stitcher Sherrie always changes or adds color to a project, and they look amazing. Again, this is a hobby, do you and what makes you happy. You don't have to please anyone but you. So glad you are feeling better about stitching. I get it I have moments where it isn't fun anymore. It is usually when I feel like I have to do what others think, when I get that out of my head, I feel so much better. Also, I too have stopped SALs, it feels like a competition in my mind, If we all got together and stitched it, then it may be fun but other than that I don't see the point of them anymore.
Such great points about colors in projects! I’m so grateful you shared. I agree, I don’t like feeling any kind of pressure in my stitching. I really appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!!
Love these ideas for changes, Lis. I’m currently test driving various needles. Truly disliked Pony, but I’ve been enjoying Bohin. Piecemakers are in my queue. I also enjoy stitching on Aida. Counting Lugana and linen is too stressful. Decades ago, I used a hoop, then I discovered scroll frames, and I loved both. I’ve been using a QSnap with my Long Dog since May, and I’m not loving it, but I don’t want to change halfway through because I feel it will change my tension. I do want to try a Nurge on my next small project. Good to know it keeps your fabric taut. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos!
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you like Bohin and will be curious to know if you like Piecemakers. I agree with you about fabric. I find it a strain to use evenweave and linen. Amazing that you’re doing a Long Dog! So exciting! Nurge hoops are very good! I hope you like them. Thank you so much for watching!!
Excellent points. Appreciate your practical and well thought out approach to cross stitching. You also covered many topics/issues that nearly every stitcher can relate to. I especially appreciated your thoughts regarding "mood stitching", sense of "obligation" or pressure when working on a gift for others and "artistic expression" when kitting up projects. Really enjoyed your floss tube!
I really enjoyed your video and I completely agree with all your points. Cross stitch is a hobby and you should feel peace and comfort when you stitch. Thank you for sharing. 🧵
I love how you phrased that- you should feel peace and comfort when you stitch. That is exactly how I want to feel! Thank you so much for sharing your comment and thank you for watching!
Love how you put these thoughts into words - especially the mood stitching and creating from your own stash - I think this applies across multiple hobby fields - I feel that we all need to remember that a hobby is for you and your own creativity - don’t worry about perfection and correct methods - i do think you have to learn the basic rules but - to truly grow as a creative artist - I think the best work and most enjoyment come out when you “ignore the rules”
I love your approach to stitching-pure freedom. I started to UFO some really old projects and got that feeling too. Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment!!
I recently got back into cross stitch after many years of not stitching and I'm enjoying it SO much. These are all great tips and I will keep all of them in mind as I continue in this hobby, so I don't get burned out. Thank you for sharing them!
Hi Lis, thanks for the video! You've inspired me to figure out what *I* like in stitching and not worry if others do it differently. I also stitch using this size of Nurge hoop and I keep my floss on floss drops or Pako organizers, and this setup seems to work just fine for me, yet I keep having doubts that maybe I need to do something differently and it will work even better. Thanks for the reminder that there's no need to have it all perfect!
Thank you so much! I know what you mean about questioning if you could or should do something differently. It can feel like a lot of pressure. But I’m glad you have a system that works for you and you enjoy. Your comment means so much to me. Thank you so much for watching!!
Hi Lis, thanks for your great floss tube episode. So well thought out and really made me think! I agree with your points - particularly about the SALs.
Nicely done! All great reminders that this is a creative process and is meant to be enjoyed. We put so much pressure on ourselves when really there is no "pass" or "fail". 😊
Hello 😊. Thank you for making this video and for all the time and effort you put into the presentation. You're right on every point! Obligation to finish and pressure to tag along are my bugbears and I'm working on those. I find that modifying charts helps me. I don't stitch a border if I think it looks fussy. I take out a motif if I don't like it, or change it to suit the way I want the piece to look. I usually want my work to look like the cover picture, so regularly change floss and fabrics that don't match it. Stitching's been a lot more fun since I started doing that. Happy stitching! x⚘️
You sound like such a fun stitcher! I love that you make the changes you want in your projects and I’m so glad it has made you a happier stitcher. Thank you so much for sharing your comment and thank you for watching!!
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful tips!!! I really enjoyed watching you, and I'm happy to say that I will be changing one or two things in my stitching to make it more enjoyable, thanks to you. I hope you have a blessed day and fabulous stitching!!!
Ha! What a timely episode! I was very frustrated with one project and ready to toss it - so you made me think about the needle on this very tight 40 count inen. I had gone to the smallest needle I could find and after this I tried going large - a trick I had learned before - and wah-la! Right now it seems the solution, hopefullly to continue thru the sampler. Thank you!
I’m so impressed that you are stitching on 40 count linen. I’ve tried it and it’s a challenge. Using a larger needle was a great idea! I hope you enjoy your project more now. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!!
I appreciate your insight to stitching. It gave me something to think about with my stitching. I used to your think a needle is a needle but that’s not true. I’ve found some to shred my floss! I will try the brand you like. I think any hobby should be enjoyable! I really liked your tips!❤
Thank you so much! I’m glad you have found the things that make stitching more enjoyable for you. You’re right, it makes such a difference. Thank you so much for watching!!
New viewer and subscriber here! Just for funsies-the hoop you loved from Michaels, is the exact same as the store brand (Artiste) of hoops from Hobby Lobby! They are wonderful, I love them!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found some helpful tips. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and watch. It means so much to me.
You are so right about the sew alongside. I do feel like a failure when people are posting pictures and I have one part done. I have go to mood stitching. Has made it fun again. Thanks for the video.
I’m so glad mood stitching makes you feel better about your stitching. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and thank you so much for watching!
Good points! I also am not drawn to a mystery SAL. When it is over, then I know if I want to do it and if there are any colors or design changes I want to make for my own preferences. But for the people who like to do that, I enjoy watching them progress. On the other hand, if someone extends an invitation to "stitch together" on something I already want to make, I enjoy the sense of companionability. Railroading is very soothing for me. I gradually developed it sua sponte decades ago, with no idea I would someday learn a name for it. I've done if for so long, I feel at one with the floss, with a sense that the threads know what I want and peacefully settle down. It's zen for me. I have a favorite needle. It amuses others. I have to pay attention to where I put it, because I wore the shine off of it decades ago. lol
I’m so happy you find railroading therapeutic and don’t do it due to pressure. A favorite needle sounds perfect to me!! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It means so much!
A great video with good food for thought! I like using Hardwicke Manor Hoops, they have a screw that you can tighten with a screw driver, if needed to tighten your fabric, not just finger tightening.
I just found your channel and I love your tips! I’m a late starter to stitching at 75 years old. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by all the FlossTube projects I watch. You have given me some great ideas. I think I can enjoy stitching more now. Thank you.
@@arleencurryThank you so much! I am so excited that you started stitching at 75!! That is awesome! I am so glad some of my thoughts resonated with you and hope you find lots of joy in your stitching! Thank you so much for watching!!
I liked the video from the beginning but started to love it when you mentioned kitting up from stash! Of course everyone can make their own decisions but I myself try to keep my stash as minimal as possible because hoarding a million flosses is impractical and also a waste of money to me. And therefore I sometimes have a hard time enjoying videos where people have huge floss storages because it's not how I roll. Thanks for sharing that opinion, keep the work up 🥰
Thank you so much! I understand not wanting to have a big inventory to manage. We each do what works best for us, right? Thank you so much for watching!!
I love this video. I had no idea there were better needles out there. I am going to try some. I’m always tempted by SALs because of the mystery and community aspects but I haven’t joined in because I’m worried about exactly what you mentioned.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad that you found something helpful. I hope you find a needle you really like. There’s a new black needle on the market called Pony needles that I’m going to try. Lindy Stitches sells them. I’ve heard good things. As for SALs I think you have to do what’s right for you. I can understand why they can be motivating too. Thank you so much for watching!! Take care!
Thank you. I feel that you are reaffirming my feelings. Also I love Aida stitching and made to feel that I was as not as good as stitchers who worked on the higher counts. I could do it but I did not enjoy. Thanks again.
just skipping by and saw the title to your video - well done - getting caught up in Flosstubes and trying to keep up with everyone and everything is expensive and exhausting - I have too many cross stitch tools that I do not use - too many WIPS that I probably won't live long enough to stitch - I have since found my own "nitch" - I am now a semi monogamous stitcher - I have one large project with a small on the side when I need a break - not for everyone obviously but works for me - I have more finished pieces and more pride in my work - thanks for a great video - looking forward to your next one 🙂
I like your approach to stitching and I’m glad you found what works well for you. It sounds like it is making you feel really good about your stitching. Thank you so much for watching!!
Love all your tips. I use hoops and scroll frames but as I get cramps in my hand from holding the hoop or frame I also use a clamp on a stand. Bonus I can stitch faster as I can stitch 2 handed, one hand above and one below. Hope this tip helps all who have problems with their hands.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad some of my thoughts resonated with you. I know what you mean about keeping up with people and it can be hard to let go and do your own thing. Thank you so much for watching!!
Hobby Lobby carries the hoops like the one from Michael’s with the ridge….I love those hoops. If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby you should try one, they have multiple sizes or you can order them.❤️
I finally settled on a 7” tension hoop, fast to move and adjust, no screwing/unscrewing with my arthritis, and it’s very lightweight. I love your suggestions! 🪡🧵☮️❤️
Tension hoops are definitely lighter and I’m so glad they work for you. It must be a challenge to stitch with arthritis. Thank you so much for watching!!
I have several of those hoops with the scew tightened. I like the ones with the ones that have a squeezable release. The ones with the screens loosen too quickly impo. Good needles are essential. I love needlepoint point, Temari Balls. And embroidery more than cross stitch. Do you use six strands of three? In needle pint we use 3 strands. I have all of my embroidery thread organized. It helps a lot. Using our stash is imperative. I don't understand what you are saying about monthly. What? Styles? The entire practice is healing our souls. I agree 100% with going with your soul's desire!!!
Really liked your video. I am a new subscriber. I feel the same about SALS. Too much pressure! Consistent stitching over time will get you there if finishes are important. They aren’t that important to me. Thanks for this and see you next time! 🇨🇦😀
Thank you so much for subscribing!! I’m so glad you joined in and for your thoughtful comment. You’re so right that if you just keep stitching, you’ll get there. No pressure. Thanks so much for watching!!
I actually just bought my first Nurge in the same color. I need to check out other needles. I tend to just get mine from Michaels. Thanks for all the tips!
It is nice to hear someone who doesn’t like railroading. I don’t. But I got graded down at our state fair bc “Some” of my stitches didn’t lay flat. Ugh!
I’m so sorry about the State Fair. In real life no one notices but I guess in a competition they are really strict. I hope you can still feel really great about your stitching. Thank you so much for watching!!
Nurge makes round spring tension hoops. I like the 6” hoop. I tried the 8”, but I don’t have the strength in my hands to open anything larger than the 6”!
Thank you so much! I’m so excited to hear about another hoop user!! You do so much stitching and I never realized that it was in a hoop. I love all your pieces BTW! Thanks so much for watching!!
Thank you so much and thank you so much for subscribing! I’m so glad to have you! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It means a lot to me.
Excellent suggesti9ns, I will definitely try using hoops, ans will try the suggested needles. That is my biggest frustration, either needle point too sharp or eye t99 small.
I like to watch people working on SALs and doing all the wipgo stuff and whatnot, but for me in actual practice, I keep things fairly simple. I am all about the mood stitching with a bit of discipline stitching thrown in for projects I want to finish, but am rarely in the mood for, so I might do a strand per day or something like that. I also just use the paper pattern, or a copy, as I don't want to be chained to a phone or tablet screen. It would really stress me out to feel like I had to work on this or that based on what others are doing, and/or only be able to work on something for one week or month of the year.
I agree that it’s fun to watch others do SALs. I wish I were as disciplined as you are. I usually end up letting go of projects that I find hard to work on. I like your technique of one strand a day. Thank you so much for watching!!
I hate Qsnaps. I bought a full set and discovered I didn't like them on the first project I tried. I too like my hoops, I also do use scroll bars. I have a floor stand I love and a lap stand I love. I sold an Elan stand a year after I got it as it didn't work well for me. I took apart a floor stand and used the parts for another project. I am still trying out different needles. A major change that helped me was my lighting. And the style of eye wear that I use. I am still railroading but I think I am ready to give it up. SALS I do not do them. If I like the pattern and there is a kit I may buy it but I can promise I will not participate in the SAL. First of I refuse to stitch in hand and I do not like how my project turns out when I have tried to stitch across a row and come back. I stitch one complete cross at a time yes, I am slower but that's how I enjoy the project. I am also a monogamous stitcher for the most part.m which I s another reason to not try and do a SAL. Plus I do not like the pressure. For years I ran a business and pressure to meet deadlines made me learn to hate what was once a great love to me. I refuse to do any project under pressure again. Thanks for letting me rant on.
Thank you so much for sharing about how you like to stitch. It is so interesting to hear a little of your journey. I’m glad you have found things that you like and I hope you find even more. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave your comment!
I would never buy a kit again. Your right, cheap floss. So hard to work with. Also, I have tried moe expensive needles, but, I always go back to size 24 DMC needles I purcahse from Walmart for $1.24 a pack of six.
Kits can really be hit or miss with the materials. I have to try the DMC needles. That’s a terrific price! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!!

Love these ideas for changes, Lis. I’m currently test driving various needles. Truly disliked Pony, but I’ve been enjoying Bohin. Piecemakers are in my queue. I also enjoy stitching on Aida. Thank you. I feel that you are reaffirming my feelings. Also I love Aida stitching and made to feel that I was as not as good as stitchers who worked on the higher counts. I could do it but I did not enjoy. Thanks again.
My favorite fabric is Aida too! I am glad you stitch on what works for you. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave your comment!
just skipping by and saw the title to your video - well done - getting caught up in Flosstubes and trying to keep up with everyone and everything is expensive and exhausting - I have too many cross stitch tools that I do not use - too many WIPS that I probably won't live long enough to stitch - I have since found my own "nitch" - I am now a semi monogamous stitcher - I have one large project with a small on the side when I need a break - not for everyone obviously but works for me - I have more finished pieces and more pride in my work - thanks for a great video - looking forward to your next one 🙂
I like your approach to stitching and I’m glad you found what works well for you. It sounds like it is making you feel really good about your stitching. Thank you so much for watching!!
Great tips. Will be looking for Nurge hoops and Piecemaker Needles. Worth a try 😊. Thank you.
Thank you so much!! I hope you like the hoops and needles!
That is such a helpful suggestion. I’m so glad you have a stand that you can use. Thank you so much for watching!!
Thank you for the great advice! This video spoke to me on many levels. I get caught up on “keeping up” with people and I need to stop doing that ❤
Thank you so much! I’m so glad some of my thoughts resonated with you. I know what you mean about keeping up with people and it can be hard to let go and do your own thing. Thank you so much for watching!!
Piecemakers 26 are the best length weight and sharpness! Makes so much difference!
I’m glad you like the Piecemakers too. It’s amazing how much the needle matters! Thanks so much for watching!!
Hobby Lobby carries the hoops like the one from Michael’s with the ridge….I love those hoops. If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby you should try one, they have multiple sizes or you can order them.❤️
This is a great tip!! Thank you so much!!
I love Nurge hoops, it’s all I use. I love a very tight hoop and fabric.
I agree that Nurge hoops are fantastic. I really like them too. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!!
I use the wooden Nurge hoops. I have sizes 1, 2, and 3. No. 2 is my favorite since it is about 5".
That’s about my favorite size too! But I only have the plastic hoops. I should try the wooden ones. Thanks so much for watching!!
Hobby lobby has the ridge and its the Artiste brand. I started using them and love them too.
That is definitely something I need to look into! Thanks so much for the tip and thank you so much for watching!
Temari Balls are beautiful! So great that you enjoy embroidery. Glad you have methods that work well for you. Thank you so much for watching!!
I hope you like your Nurge hoop! Needles made a difference for me but that’s not the same for everyone. Thank you so much for watching!!
@@stitchinglis I am using it on a full cover at the moment and loving it so far. 💕
@@StitchingSistersinChrist That's amazing! You're so brave to do a full coverage piece. I'm so glad you're loving your Nurge hoop!
Good advice
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found something helpful. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and for watching!
Oh, that is so good to know! Thank you so much for telling me. I’m glad you found a hoop you like. Thank you so much for watching!!
Awesome advice! I also, no longer like stitching on a qsnap. I much more prefer my favourite hoop or nurge.
Thank you so much! I’m so excited to hear about another hoop user!! You do so much stitching and I never realized that it was in a hoop. I love all your pieces BTW! Thanks so much for watching!!
Hobby Lobby has a hoop that is very similar to the one you showed from Michaels. It is my favorite one to use.
That is such good news! Thanks so much for telling me. And thank you so much for watching!!
Great suggestions. I only railroad now when there’s a big section of white
Thank you so much! White can be a little tricky so I understand why you railroad it. Thank you so much for watching!!
❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching!!
Fantastic tips! New sub 💛
Thank you so much and thank you so much for subscribing! I’m so glad to have you! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It means a lot to me.
@@stitchinglis you’re welcome! Thank you for the tips! 😀
Excellent suggesti9ns, I will definitely try using hoops, ans will try the suggested needles. That is my biggest frustration, either needle point too sharp or eye t99 small.
I hope you find a needle you like. I had to try several. But it makes a difference. Thank you so much for watching!!
I love stitching in a small hoop. I'd rather move the hoop around than be uncomfortable while stitching.
I agree with you! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and for watching!
Have you tried a Morgan hoop as they are very similar to your round hoop from Michael’s?
I haven’t tried a Morgan hoop but now I want to! Thank you so much for the suggestion and thank you for watching!!
I bet you’d like the Clover hoop better than either of those. Check it out. It’s the best hoop I’ve ever used and I have all kinds of hoops.
I will definitely check them out! Thanks so much for the suggestion! And thank you so much for watching!!
