The year I was born! Lovely to see St Augustine pool. I remember swimming lessons there in the 1970s and many Saturday mornings with my mates daring each other to jump off the high board. Great memories.

I used to go with my grandfather to buy cattle, when the livestock market was next to the castle, and whilst your videos are delightful, they do make me remember my age, as I recall what places looked like in those days.

Great trip down memory lane - can’t believe the difference where the Grove Stores were! Remember a lot of the other locations looking like that when I was a kid, particularly Peter Robinsons, The Mecca and London Street. Funnily enough, I did my dissertation at university on the pedestrianisation of London Street as it was historically significant in town planning terms for the UK. Keep up the excellent videos.

I think you've mentioned before about this smells that take you back. For me the most glorious smell was when walking behind Mecca with the breeze coming from the chocolate factory mixing with freshly roasted coffee. When you put up the Mecca picture I could smell it.Thank you. Then the windy bus station.Seldom had any money left to visit the station cafe for a warm up.

Ronnie G. I visited the Great Eastern Hotel twice in about 1958, the public bar on the corner by the balcony and Prince of Wales road is the only drinking house I ever went in which actually had sawdust on the floor. Round the corner was a lounge which had whicker chairs, and baskets with something like bamboo growing in them, shades of Singapore perhaps. Sadly, it appeared a bit run down.
