- In this video we'll look at How to Install QBittorrent with a VPN on OMV/Docker.
The process is pretty easy and straightforward, but you'll need a VPN account in order for this to work. I'll be using Private Internet Access (PIA).
There are several other providers that will work with this. Here's a blog post that has some other options, but you can search for more by Googling "OpenVPN Providers": www.vpnranks.c...
Here is the full tutorial on my blog:

Can you please make a video where you show how can we connect a container (qbittorrent or any other) to a container with a vpn client? This video is great, but it would be even better to have the containers separated
Thanks for the video! For anyone having troubles with the WebUI not showing up, putting VPN_ENABLED=true instead of "yes" solved it for me
You just ended an odyssey of an hour of searching and debugging for me. Thanks a lot, mate! :)
this method is not working, putting any random words will definately turns on the service with or without the vpn config files...
Thank you!
It appears that there is no arm version of this repo. can you please point me in the right direction for getting any torrent with PIA vpn working together on arm (raspberry pi) I currently have qbittorrent installed and working, but it's the base version with no vpn. I could install openvpn separate, but I don't know how to route one container through another. I'm also using nginx proxy manager and cloudflare as you have shown in other videos. I'm getting closer to my goal, but this is a hard step for me.
Thanks for the tutorial DB! Toward the end of the video, how are you verifying that the VPN is working via IP? Could you send directions on how to verify if the VPN is actually working or not? Also, is there a way to put more volumes into the stack so we can choose which folders to download to? When I tried to add more volumes I got some error like, "expected end of stack.."? Thank you for these videos!
At 11:34 you can see part of the IP address from the indexer I use. The other thing you can do is, once the container is up and running, go into Portainer.
Find your container.
The "Quick Actions" column will have 4 icons.
Look for the >_ icon.
That's for the terminal. Click it.
Then click the "Connect" button on the next page.
In the terminal screen that shows up, type: curl ifconfig.io
That should return your VPN IP address.
So, hoping someone will know how to fix this. Pia doesn't seem to offer those legacy files anymore. When I try the other OVPN files I get the following error: "openvpn: error while loading shared libraries: liblzo2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied". Has anyone else experienced this and if so did you fix it and how... I'm running trying to run this on a synology nas if that changes anything.
Hello DB Tech, first thank you for your awesome video. You are a master. I have a question about the ftp access with filezilla to your omv machine. Did you install a container on it in order to access, or did you just simply enter the local_ip of your machine with login+password of this machine ? Thank you in advance
I've been banging my head against the wall trying to run my -arrs on the same machine as qbittorrent and its vpn, this fixes the issue so easily. Thanks for making this video!
Hell yeah! That's awesome!
I am new to this space, and I was looking to a solution like this for some weeks now. Your solution was easy to understand and configure. Thank you very much!
Glad it helped!
The video is great. Thanks. I had to change my port from 8080:8080 to 8081:8080 and now I can't reach the qbittorrent interface.
I have the same issue
When I'm running the VPN I can't access the web GUI for Qbittorent. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Edit: I had misconfigured my network by putting 10.0.0.1 instead of 10.0.0.0 whoops
Can you show how to make all of your other containers use this same VPN connection? Assuming you are using all of the *arr programs. Can you force all of the other containers to use this VPN, and if the VPN disconnects does qBittorrent or another one have a killswitch so that it doesn't do anything unless on VPN only?
my OVPN file was US California.ovpn - caused tons of issues ... removed the space.... BUENO! you rock dude thanks @DB Tech ... now to try to get my cameras set up...
That's awesome! Glad you got it sorted!!
how to get this working with a genuine open source copy of openvpn (selfhosted server without username and password)?
Would be nice to see some more vids without Docker Portainer.
I got OMV Plex working, but without the qbittorrent plugin my interest in OMV are gone.
Also the latest update on OMV yesterday has harmed the CPU usage on my Pi4.
Please make more vids without Docker.
Your problem is with Open Media Vault, not Docker and Portainer. OMV recently changed a bunch of stuff that screwed up a lot of installs and upset a bunch of people. I made a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/f8Yoo4FRGBU/видео.html Docker and Portainer are completely separate from OMV. Hell, Portainer is its own separate thing just to manage Docker containers.
Some help please; running most recent versions of OMV and docker. When deploying, container hangs on this error:
"RTNETLINK answers: Permission denied,
Linux ip -6 addr add failed: external program exited with error status: 2"
Enabled ipv6 in docker deamon.json and added "net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 0" to sysctl.conf - Still no luck, so I gave up for now. Anybody know a fix?!?
Thanks so much for the video, I love it! I do have one problem that I'm not sure how to fix:
When using qBittorrent in the past I was able to access my WebUI from outside of my LAN by port-forwarding the WebUI port, but it is not working with this setup (presumably because the entirety of QBT is running through a VPN). Is there a way to set my WebUI access as an exception so I can access my WebUI outside of LAN? Thanks again!
I have no idea
This will be done by port forwarding - You need to check your router manual how you can forward 8080 and 8999 outside LAN. If you have 2 layers of router, then a DMZ might need to be established
Can not make this work, got RTNETLINK Permission denied. Something with ipv6
Thanks a lot, awesome and very helpful video. :) It's a bit of a pity that the qt version in the container is only 4.3.8 (current release is at 4.6.3 already). Could get 4.6.3 as an Unraid "app". But for a quick Portainer solution this is great too of course.
Works perfectly! This was the solution I was looking for. I have zero tier on my server and it doest like it when another vpn is running next to it, this just solved it!
Anyway is there anyway to test if the vpn is actually working?
Thanks!
Fantastic video! A pastebin of the docker compose text would be helpful for the especially lazy among us!!
There is his blog website in the description. The docker compose is there
Worked for me, thanks!
Thanks to your tutorial, I got this setup! Was so happy you used PIA as that's what I have too! Question, is there a way to manually specify a download location with each torrent? Like, could I manually specify to download to my Movies folder for one torrent, then my TV folder for the next etc.
Can't be that specific to my knowledge. One location per connection. One connection per container.
@@DBTechYT Thanks for getting back! Your vids are super helpful!
apparently you cant :/
Adding my thanks for your informative videos. So likely a stupid question, but like a lot of folks that check out your videos, I'm new to some of this stuff. If I have an existing container for qBittorrent, is it possible to edit it in Portainer and just update the information accordingly to pull in this image and configure the VPN and not start an entirely new container? I'm trying to keep from losing what I have in my queue. I assume it might overwrite everything anyway, but just curious if this is doable.
Hey thank you so much for making these videos. They're helping me a lot!
I am getting an error after deploying the stack (7:20 in the video):
standard_init_linux.go:211: exec user process caused "exec format error"
This was displayed in the log of the stack. Any idea what it could be?
I am using a raspberry pi
Might not be compatible with RPi. You'd have to look at the Docker page
@@DBTechYT So I am having an issue with my system. After installing OMV, then plex, then transmission and PIA VPN, it works perfectly and as expected initially. However later on, plex doesn't detect or see anything and says the server is down (from localhost:32400) everything else is running fine (if I check protrainer). However, I can no longer ssh to my Pi or do anything. I tried to reboot, tried to redo the whole process on a fresh sd card. Do you have an idea what this could may be?
Hi DB, as usually, your videos are wonderfull. I followed your indication and now I have on my OMV Qbittorent with opnvpn. How I can check if the VPN work fine? in your video yuo show at 11'20" how do it, but I don't understand how to do (I'm italian and don't speak english, I follow your tutorial only looking whats you do). Thanks and ciao
I got the .ovpn file from my VPN webpage, but the .crt and .pem file i didnt find anywhere? Also im getting error when starting it up, probably because im missing those files?
Same... I'm using NordVPN.
@@iDad-3 Hope someone have a solution
DBtech thank you so much for getting me started on my home media server project after wanting to for so long. so I am running OMV5 on raspberry pi 4 with docker + plex server + openvpn server. But i am hitting a wall when downloadin this qbittorrent with vpn (I am using PIA also). The imaged used in your video is based of AMD but the rpi runs on ARM. I tried looking for for couple other but no luck (github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn that was the best i could do for some reason i could not access the webui even thought the port was expressed). If you have any advice. thanks again!
Great video! This was working for a few months, but I recently started getting startup errors like this:
Sun Aug 16 02:13:40 2020 TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity),
Sun Aug 16 02:13:40 2020 TLS Error: TLS handshake failed,
Sun Aug 16 02:13:40 2020 SIGUSR1[soft,tls-error] received, process restarting,
Help?
Sometimes you gotta restart the container a couple of times to get it to connect. I've run into it a couple of times recently
I suggest you add - TZ=America/New_York in the compose file to set the time zone (what ever yours is) otherwise you wont be able to throttle by time.
I followed and used your transmission tutorial, now i wanted to try qbittorrent but the setup is really different. i can't find what file to download for torguardVPN for raspberry pi4. i remember using only the link for the port forwarding for torguard, i didn't download anything for transmission. what am i not getting about this?
Thanks for this tutorial, just dynamite. I've gone and used your other videos to help set up the rest of my system and they are just as good.
My question is whether I need to perform additional steps to port forward if I have completed your setup using PIA too? My setup is virtual identical but as this is new to me I wanted to optimize Qbittorrent if possible and couldn't confirm if that was the case with port forwarding or not.
Thanks.
There is nothing on YOUR end that you need to do for port forwarding. That is all on the server end and it will either be enabled or not. That's up to the provider. :)
@@DBTechYT Cheers. Thanks for the response and thanks for the great videos.
WebUI is not accessible from a different machine when VPN is active. You dont show your VPN active so you didnt come across this problem. Any idea how to resolve please?
I have a Raspberry Pi and it runs with raspbaiOS. I've installed CasaOS and thats my first time getting in touch with docker.
I've installed portainer and succesfully installed qbittorrent as shown in the video but since raspberry is arm it cant run this docker Containerr.
Do you think you can do a tutorial with a raspberry pi?
4:55 If i set VPN_ENABLED to 'no' does it still work? Can this be used to quickly switch between Qbittorrent / Qbittorrent + VPN by restarting the container?
I'm not sure. Give it a shot and let me know :)
I am getting these errors below. I am a total noob and I have been researching for the last 3 days. If anyone has any input it would e greatly appreciated.

Don't run on raspberry pi4 (armv7 arch)
yeah, not running on rpi 4.. anyone had luck ? @DB Tech
Do you use the TCP or UDP config file?
Hey thank you so much for making these videos! Are we able to put a lots of VPN location files or only one? 8.30 thanks!
You can put as many as you like
@@DBTechYT dude, I am not able to have couch potato working with QBittorrent...do you know why?
So which version works ? This one or the one in your media stack video I been trying to fix this for about 12 hours
Hey DBtech, thanks for the video, its great!
I tried to use your stack in portainer - changing the values to my details but i am getting this error msg in the logs
ERROR: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2)
Any ideas???
Same here
Same here, anyone figure it out?
I it possible to configure a kill switch in this setup?
Same error as others regarding changing 8080 port.
I changed the WebUI port to 8086 and ports 8086:8080, but can't access the web interface.
Yep. Might be worth reaching out to the developers
Same issue :/
have been trying to do this for a while but I'm using Casa OS how do I set up a openVPN on casa os and run my qbittorrent through that thank you
That docker hasn't been updated in 2 years. Is there a way to update the Qbittorrent to the current version inside the docker?
Can you please do a video on how to install windows based software on a raspberry pi, basically on Linux. Thanks! ( Not how to install windows itself. )
Im at a loss here, the legacy IP is not an option anymore. What do I do?
@6:44 you talk about file paths, the openmediavault software is linux only, I'm only on Windows and I'm running my files through my local PC and not a NAS, what would be the file paths?
This video is about installing a qBittorrent Docker container, not just installing the qBittorrent executable on your Windows machine.
I installed OMV5 and installed transmission with vpn but I got only 16-17mbit/s speed.
Then I saw this video(verry good made, thx) and tryed qbitt. Works fine but I get still 16-17Mbit/s.
qBitt on Windows PC with VPN with the same torrent 400-450Mbit/s.
I HAVE NO IDEA Why!?
Another awesome video! Though with about 180 torrents, I'm sitting at about 3 gigs of used RAM, any ideas of why or how to lower this? I have about 400 more to add, would this cause me to max out my ram and cause stability issues?
Why are you trying to load 580 torrents? Unless you've got Gigabit speeds for your internet, you're not going to be able to share them all at a decent speed. You may want to dial it back a bit or get a more robust system.
@@DBTechYT The plan was to pull these torrents from my current seed box and run them directly on my OMV server in this neat docker thing as it's where my "linux isos" end up anyways once done downloading, to cut out the middle man. I've got plenty of speed and like supporting the community, just making sure this is worth the effort of moving to Docker or not. The OMV box has 32 gigs of ECC ram, so 3-5 gigs missing is fine, just seems like a lot for torrenting Thank you so much again!
Google was being a pain with my comment... Having issues with accessing the webgui. Using nordvpn which has openvpn files. My password has no special characters. My error code is ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. Port opened to 8080.
Cannot access the web gui. Thanks in advance.
This qBittorrent container has been like this for a while. The best thing to do is to set the VPN setting in the docker-compose/stack to off/false and use this technique instead: ruclips.net/video/xbSfaKwyfXE/видео.html
Hello DB Tech, I am only able to access Torrent WebUI when VPN_ENABLED is set to no, when it is set to yes, I can't access WebUI. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
This has been an issue with this setup for a while. I've found it's better to go with this method instead: ruclips.net/video/xbSfaKwyfXE/видео.html
deos anybody know how to change setttings if i want to use qbittorent on one raspbery pi and the download folder to be on another raspery pi running omv?
Hey there! Thanks for the awesome vid it helped troubleshoot my container issues. Seems that PIA no longer supports 2.3 or provides legacy files. I keep getting OVPN issues when starting my container. Error here: openvpn: error while loading shared libraries: liblzo2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied
EDIT: It has to do with my linux distro (Synology DSM 7) if you get this issue just uncheck run container at elevated privileges, start it and let it fail, stop it, re-check box, run. Good to go
This is the error I get when I deploy the container - "Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2)". I followed every step
You wouldn't believe what the error was! My PIA password had a special character that was causing the issue. Changed it to alphanumeric and it worked fine
Very handy stack. Everything is working well for me, but how are you verifying what IP you're using? I'm not finding where you check that in the Web UI
if you're using Portainer, you can go to your containers list, find your qbittorrent container, click the "Exec Console" icon, click "Connect", and run the command: curl ifconfig.io
@@DBTechYT Yeah, I am using portainer. I just ran that command and it returned my VPN's IP. Thanks for the help.
@@DBTechYT One more question, do you know how to determine which port (if any) PIA is forwarding to us? I forwarded 8999 TCP & UDP to the server running my container, but that doesn't seem to be enough (i also changed the listening port to match in qbittorrent). In the PIA desktop client there's an option to request port forwarding, but I'm not sure how to do that for OpenVPN. I found some scripts at github pia-foss/manual-connections repo that discuss enabling port forwarding. I was able to generate a token to use in the example below under "Manual PF Testing" but it times out when running the curl -k command + address&token. Is there another way to request port forwarding via OpenVPN and/or find out which port they are forwarding? Are you able to seed? Thanks.
I was using a US server and I just noticed that port forwarding isn't enabled for US servers. I think I might be able to figure it out now.
Hi! thank for the vide. Any chance you know why I'm getting "unsupported Compose file version: 2" when deploying the stack?
Hi DB Tech can you make a video for use a download manager like IDM, JDownloader etc. via webgui? I have added uGet but not works well.
I would like to see one working for Rpi 4. were you able to find one?
@@bangladas0088 I have founded Ariang is awesome but more awesome is also jdownloader container in combo with chrome extension myjdownloader is OP
What Ethernet interface do you set in qbittorrent to access the vpn.
I've tried to repeat the whole process several times, but my container continue just to restart in an infinite loop. No idea why.
I would look at your container logs in portainer to see what the issue is.
hey it worked! 😀
🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉
PIA users can anyone tell me what the speeds are like compared to NordVPN?
I want to try and follow this great tutorial but I'm a but confused what i can do best. There are allot of different ways to get torrents but I'm not really sure what is easy to install but also secure with a vpn like PIA.
So do i need to use jackett and and portainer in combination with radarr, sonarr, lidarr and qbittorent to get torrents on my synology nas or can i just use qbittorrent with a vpn to get all my desired torrents?
You can do it any way you like. But... With Sonarr, Radarr, Jackett, etc. you can automate the entire process. Want to keep up-to-date with your favorite show? Set up Sonarr to download it without you needing to remember when the show comes out and download it. Want to get the newest movie as soon as it's available? Set it up in Radarr and you won't have to keep looking for it. Sonarr will do it for you.
I followed every steps, and no way to access the web gui
Then you missed something.
Did you change to a diff port other then 8080? if so its not working for me either. if i use 8080 its ok but changing to anything else i get a 401 error.
@@chrisengle2192 I reinstalled everything and that works, I probably didn't set the port mapping AND the env webui_port_env correctly
for some reason I cant use any other volumes, I wanted to create seperate stuff e.g /anime for anime and /shows for shows but it will only download in AS /downloads nothing else lol
Another useful helpful video. Everything was easy to setup thanks to your video and blog. I went into launching Qbittorrent and I found I was not able to get to the login screen for qbittorrent. If I turn off the VPN part I get into Qbittorrent and the login screen. Any ideas?
Just wanted to say, I went back through the tutorial and everything is working. Thanks again for the video.
Glad it helped!
I had this running perfectly until today. I had to re-deply the stack but now I'm unable to edit the container.
Out of the box this runs on an IP address I can't access, so I want to edit the container and change it to be on another network that I created, and set its IP address on that network.
I don't understand why I can no longer edit the container after deploying it.
You should be able to edit the container in Portainer.
Login to Portainer.
Click the whale in the middle of the page.
Click "Containers" in the left column.
Find the Container you want to edit.
Click the name of the container.
You should see "Duplicate/Edit" at the top of the page on the right side.
@@DBTechYT yeah, it used to give me that option. I get the option for all other containers, but this container doesn't let me anymore.
Maybe it's wrong PUID and PGID?
@@DBTechYT I did have to change to version 3. I guess my NAS updated and v2 isn't supported any more.
Could that mean other parts need to change, too?
I managed to get it sorted running it just as a container. It took a bit of reading up on capabilities and devices, but I got there in the end.
Are there any benefits to running this in a stack?
has anyone got this working with surfshark? I can get the ovpn file but not the ca crt or crl pem files. i am up and running in the qbittorrent web ui but can't get any downloads to work, suspect connection issue because of the missing files. You might try this method instead: ruclips.net/video/xbSfaKwyfXE/видео.html

Hi there. Thank you so much for all videos. My qbitorrent with VPN works very nice ; but, I cannot seed torrents. I guess it's because of the VPN. Have you some idea please ? Thanks.

@@DBTechYT Thanks you ... very impatient to find out more :)
Can you use port forwarding from pia vpn? Also what is the best os for rasberry pi4 for Plex qbitorrent ,file sharing using docker-portainer?
You shouldn't need port forwarding with this setup. Also, from my experience, a Pi 4 isn't a great option for a media server as you'll only be able to process certain video files at 1080p or less
@@DBTechYT thanks. If someone want to connect with all seed and peers he doesn't need port forwarding!

"exec format error" means you are trying to run a container for the wrong architecture.
For example, if you get this error on an ARM processor device, the container is only available for x86 processors.

Have tried to comment the log but it is too long
Log docs.google.com/document/d/1V4GLnhLuTDNW1d13tddnaBv2efA-3vYL_eWZ1N1y7Sk/edit?usp=sharing
2 things: 1. Can't access your google doc. 2. if you can't access the UI, then either your VPN isn't container connected to the vpn service. What I recommend is NOT using the VPN functionality in the qBittorrentVPN container. Just set that setting to "no". Then use this method as there is just something broken in the qBittorrentVPN container: ruclips.net/video/xbSfaKwyfXE/видео.html
Found the fix at 4:58 make sure that "1" is a "0" if that's how your LAN is set up.

@@DBTechYT No special characters, and joined for the one you show on the video Based-on how much success I had with your videos
@@DBTechYT I thought I replied
No odd characters I signed up for the same vpn in the video and at this point thinking I will start the whole server from scratch to see if there is a difference
I don't understand why you just jump into portainer, why can't anyone make a fully from ground 0 tutorial?
Because I did a video about Portainer earlier in the playlist
where should I start?@@DBTechYT
Lol you use TDay
I can neither confirm nor deny that. Also, how would *you* know? LOL 😉
@@DBTechYT ahah, nice one, idk maybe because I'm investigating, or maybe because we are both too familiar with that page, by checking it an unhealthy amount. Great Video though, it will help me... Further... My investigation... when I build my NAS soon, also I want to subscribe to surfshark, will that work with this? Since when I checked the docker page it said something about supported VPNs, is that just for quick locations, or it would not support other VPNs? Nevermind I was looking at the wrong docker page
for such a common use-case of running a torrent client through a VPN it seems like there would be a much more simple solution than going through all this nonsense
you might call it nonsense, but for those of us who do a fair amount of self-hosting stuff, this is just another, honestly fairly basic, thing we do to help simplify our lives.
Buyer Beware! This guide does not work on ARM architecture. If using any ARM processor you will not be able to setup the service. Too bad this is not pointed out on the guide itself, it would save a lot of time
I keep getting this error: "standard_init_linux.go:228: exec user process caused: exec format error"
That error means that the container isn't compatible with your Raspberry Pi
@@DBTechYT i get the same error, but im not using RasberryPi... im using another arm64 ;)
anyway, is there another way to setup qbitorrent with vpn on a arm64 system?!
