I am just so happy to see you di a special spot on the great Thelma Ritter! I actually l9ved her in Daddy Long Legs as the romantic secretary to Fred Astaire who tears up from all the letters Leslie Caron writes to her Daddy L9ng Legs. I havevto rewatch Pickup on South St. It's been too long. For me, the top 3 are All About Eve, Rear Window and Pillow Talk. I alsobthought she was excellentcas the manipulative man to Burt Lancaster in The Birdman of Alcatraz. She could play anything. Gosh Miller is the Susan Lucci of the Sound Dept.! I have a lot of film books and learned from my dad and from my books. When I learned that she died at this early age, I was so sad. I might have been 10 years old, but it got to me. I can't think of anyone that could represent Thelma for today. Thanks for making my day!
The first film of Thelma's to comes to mind for me is 'Pillow Talk" where she plays Doris Days house keeper. The scene where she drinks Rock Hudson under the table is hilarious! I loved all of her performances. She always held her own, no matter how big the co-stars were.
Ritter was certainly every bit as much of a movie star as her more glamorous, but, not as talented, contemporaries. In her era, I would even go so far as to call her a film institution. I am ashamed to say that I knew almost nothing about her origins, so once again, I'm indebted to you for this very interesting information about this truly great performer!
Hi you all - really enjoyed this episode.. I did not recognize the name - but OF COURSE I recalled the characters and the voice - immediately! As a 60 year old "youngster" - let me just say - Hooray for the late bloomers!! Side note - just wanted to say - I think the reason I am such a reliable fan of FBTHS is just this - when I listen to every episode.. - when it wraps - I am happy and in a calm and fine mood! - history is very comforting.. historical films even more so! - keep going Gang!
I really enjoyed this feature about entertainer, Thelma Ritter. She was one of my all-time favorites because of the diversity that she bought to every part that she played. Great research and presentation, too. Take care 🌟
She was a fireball of talent❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥.....My favorite is Pillow Talk❤❤❤....She stole the picture from Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Sometimes I wonder if she held back her acting talent on screen in many of her film appearances. This is why I love her in Pillow Talk where I feel her talent exploded on screen.
A Thelma Ritter equivalent? I agree on Kathy Bates. Perhaps also, Jean Smart. Best performance? Maybe "The Misfits". Diane Warren is still waiting for her first competitive Oscar after 15 nominations for best song.
Yes, Diane Warren's quest for an Oscar after 15 tries is well documented. People think she's the Susan Lucci of the Oscars...until they learn about poor, poor Greg Russell. 🙂
Great to see Ritter receive her due here. I'd go with "The Mating Season," "Pickup" and "Eve" for favorite Ritter performances.

As a kid watching movies, I always loved Thelma Ritter. My favorite role of hers was A Letter to Three Wives.

If Thelma's in a film, I know I'm gonna like it.
Rhea Pearlman has always reminded me of Thelma. The voice, the face, the sassy attitude.
@@jillmuscat4983 Yes!Absolutely! That’s a great one! She reminds me of Thelma too!

Julie Walters character roles could be very Thelma Ritter. The late June Squibb? Alison Janey?
Yes! These are all three great suggestions for he modern-day Thelma Ritter! Love Julie Walters in "Billy Elliot!" 🙂
