GENE MARKEY was an interesting character. He was a Hollywood writer and producer who had a decent, but not spectacular career. But what makes him so fascinating is the company he keeps. He later left Hollywood behind and married a wealthy Kentucky horsewoman and...
FBTHS Episode 56 Marjorie Reynolds

Most film fanatics agree that after the Paramount Picture’s holiday classic “Holiday Inn” (1942), actress MARJORIE REYNOLDS, who gave a star-turn as struggling actress Linda Mason who gets a break singing and dancing in the seasonal nightclub run by BING CROSBY, should have been a big star. However, for reasons not quite clear, she didn’t rise into the stratosphere. While she had a very respect...
STEVE AND NAN'S FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS FROM THE 1950s

The 1950s was a real transitional decade for classic films. As we got further away from World War II, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. Films took on a grittier, more realistic feel, and the subject matters were darker and more controversial. It was the decade that sparked masterpieces like “...

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW (Ep. 31)
I'm just gobsmacked that a convicted felon, twice impeached, racist, sexual predators might actually win the Presidency again! If he told people to wear running shoes and purple scarfs and drink some Kool aide, many would follow. Sorry for going there...I need to see the Gabriel film and the Great McGinty. I love Brian Donlevy and glad he has a starring role. Listening tonyour podcast, just shows how corrupt everything was and still is. I really enjoyed the Abe Luncoln film but I was disappointed in 3 Days of the Condor. I must give it another chance but the 70s were great for ambiguous endings which irritated the hell out of me. I wrote some of these down and hope to view them
Magnificent episode, perfectly timed. LOVE your choices, particularly "The Great McGinty," an all time fave -- fun fact, Muriel Angelus was an English actress of considerable stage musical experience, introduced "Falling in Love With Love" in the original "Boys From Syracuse" and turned down the Mother Abbess in the original "Sound of Music," left films because she preferred the stage and her married life to the cinema process -- and "The Best Man," which still holds up without much adjustment to this day, hence its successful Broadway revival a decade or so back with James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, etc. Mr. Vidal knew whereof he wrote. Besides the other great items you cited, would add "State of The Union," "Bulworth," "Nashville" -- yes, it's a political film, think about it -- "The American President," and either "Manchurian Candidate," but particularly the original. Oh, and "The Candidate," possibly the greatest final line of a political film ever. Wonderful work, Steve & Nan, more, please, thank you. ❤️🤍💙
It's a pity that Muriel left movies so early. She was very appealing! She's also really wonderful in "The Light That Failed" with Ronald Colman and Ida Lupino. 🙂
"The Great McGinty" is a gem of a picture, with just the right dose (HEAVY) of cynicism. Enjoy!
Another wonderful episode and more movies added to my ever expanding to be watched list 😊❤
I meant to say, of course, in my main comment, politics REARS it's ugly head.
Well, at least you didn't say anything about irs ugly rear.
Ah, politics tears it's ugly head. I have always hated politics, so much so that in my 63 years, this is my first trip to the ballot box. Though I despise politics, I recognize how fertile a field for storytelling it is, with some of our best films featuring political themes. There are too many pictures to mention, but 2 of my favorites are "The Manchurian Candidate" and "JFK". I think that both these films have enough depictions of unbridled corruption, conspiracy theories, and, of course the easy, facile lies which are the Hallmark of our political system. Thanks for this episode It's obviously timely, and, frankly, I thought your program was too vanilla to delve into these darkest regions of American cinema. Everybody, please vote!
I also love "The Manchurian Candidate." Another great political film. And yes, everybody please VOTE!! 🙂
Gabriel Over The White House and Salt of the Earth were on TCM a few weeks ago
Great!!! I remember the movie with Henry Fonda and all the other greats!!
Another great episode….I have a.lot of movies to watch!! 😜😉
I am late (been in the mountains for two weeks, without cell service 😳😱) but, Happy Anniversary and congratulations on year #2!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 That is so exciting & well deserved!!! I have enjoyed your show so much, learned a ton, and have spent many hours catching up on a lot of great old movies. Loved this episode and can’t wait to watch some of the “horror” films and these two iconic actors, leading up to Halloween!! 🎃 👻💀 Keep up the great work and I’ll be here next Halloween to celebrate year #3!!
Thank you so much, Donna! We really appreciate the kind words! I hope you had fun in the mountains. Were you in the Smokeys? 🙂
And here I thought I was unique. I, too, was led into general movie buffdom (buffery??) in my teens in the 1960s. A budding appreciation for great character actors like Claude Rains and Peter Lorre just naturally segued into Humphrey Bogart pictures, just as Lionel Atwill (an interesting subject for a biographical episode) and Basil Rathbone took me to Errol Flynn territory. Thanks for the program (and a special thanks to Ms. McNamara for pronouncing Bela correctly)! Happy Anniversary and Happy Halloween to all involved.
I just found you. I loved this, I'm a big fan of both men. I have a small framed color movie poster of The Black Cat hanging in my living room. I adore them and learned some. Thank you so much! And you two are just great at this! You are informative, fun, just terrific! I'll be back.
@@darrenmiller6927 Hi Darren! Thank you for your nice message. We are so glad you found us. We love Boris and Bela so much. We’re so happy you liked the episode! We have some really fun things planned for Season 2!
Yes, its quite funny. I meant to also sayvthatvi have seen The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini and i love it! I betvyou and Nan would both enjoy it. You have kids, a haunted house, evil guys, Boris, a gorilla and those biker guys..von Zipper and the gang...lol
I agree Hedy, was quite beautiful, but for me Vivian Leigh.
Vivien Leigh was also a STUNNER! Absolutely!
I have always loved Boris, a great underappreciated actor.
@@eschnitger I agree 100%. Great actor!
🎉🎉🎉Yay🎉🎉🎉 Have you ever heard the podcast "You Must Remember This" she did eight episodes on these two and their careers it is great just like yours.
Love this episode, but I say this about all of them. Bela is an interesting character who loved but also disliked, slightly, his vampire association. He was one good looking chap when he was young. Wonder how he got hooked on drugs?? He was one brave man to come forward in the news about his addiction. This was at a time when that was always hushed up by everyone, not just the Hollywood community. My favourite is Boris Karloff who was so English and a very gentle man. When he wad in Canada, in 1912, he helped in the devastating tornado that went through Regina. He and other members of the troup helped in cleaning up and saving people. One of my favourite anecdotes was when he was living, probably at the home you mentioned, in Hollywood, he was in full Frankenstein make up. He went home to take care of his garden when a cop car came up. The cops had no idea what to do seeing this large man in full make up. Poor Boris explained that he was an actor and had to check on his roses. Apparently, some neighour saw him and freaked out calling the police.
LOL! I hadn't hadn't heard that story about the cops showing up. That's is so great. As always, THANK YOU for the great message, Birgit! 🙂
Congratulations to you all on what I hope is the start of many more year long podcasting anniversaries! What a delightfully informative episode about two horror titans. You all continue to outdo yourselves with each episode and I am so excited for more! ❤
THANK YOU so much! your kind words and support mean so much. We owe our success to folks like who have been so supportive! 🙂 We have some fun things planned for Season 2!
And they said it wouldn't last! Of course, I'm not surprised in the least, this show being one of the best video series on the Internet. The attention to detail, extensive research, and obvious love of the subject matter are unsurpassed by anything I've seen and make it one of the few shows I watch fr beginning to end. The hosts seem to be truly passionate about the Golden Age and have taught me (and, I'm sure, many others) an incredible amount of film trivia. This is a very enjoyable program, and I sincerely wish you many more anniversaries!
Hi Kerry! Thank you for the great message and for the support of the show! It means the world to us! We owe our success to you! 🙂
Congratulations! Your enthusiasm and love of classic Hollywood is contagious
Thank you so much, Kim. We really appreciate your kind words and your support for the show! We couldn't have gotten here without you! 🙂
Congratulations on your one year anniversary. A great podcast deserves another year.I am looking forward to a new season of fun, facts, and familiar Hollywood actors, actresses. Amatol ,Secondly, Tuanal, and alcohol are not a good combination, trust me.
I've just discovered your fantastic podcast recently and must commend you both on your great input. I guess it doesn't hurt that I'm a huge classic film fanatic. Anyway, another obscure Christmas movie (sort of) is a British film from 1949 called " The Rocking Horse Winner." It's a fantasy/drama but well deserved investigating if you really want to see something different. I only discovered it myself a year or so ago and totally enjoyed it. Keep up the phenomenal work.
Thank you for your nice message! We're so glad you found us. And thank you for telling me about "The Racing Horse Winner." I don't know this one and I love to discover new films. I will definitely check it out! :-) Steve
@@FromBeneathTheHollywoodSign I just watched it again and I'm not too sure I would classify it as a Christmas movie so for that I apologize. I think the reason I thought it was a Christmas film is because at the very beginning it starts out at Christmas then it turns into so much more. It's almost somewhat dark. Just want to correct myself.
@@rhd123 I still want to watch it. It sounds really interesting!
I liked her as Bobbie Logan in the Karloff Mr. Wong series.
Love the Kentucky Connection here Steve and Nan! - I can tell you as a NY to Kentucky Transplant back in 1988 - it is VERRY easy to fall into the wonderful lifestyle of being a "Kentucky Gentleman" - - - - - - Jeffrey Wilson
Hi Jeffrey! We thought of you as we did this episode! 🙂Mr. Markey certainly took to the Kentucky lifestyle! 🙂
@@FromBeneathTheHollywoodSign - thanks Steve! - here is some perhaps interesting, perhaps useless trivia for you - Calumet Farm is an iconic location in Lexington - and in the Bluegrass in general.... I think it is because of Calumet - many folks think of the traditional Kentucky Horse farm as having white slat fences... in general - these horse farm fences are always BLACK - much easier to paint and maintain with black paint - I have been driving around this area daily for 30 years - and I am fairly sure Calumet is the ONLY horse farm with white fences.. Also - Calumet dates from 1924 - founded by William Monroe Wright, founding owner of the Calumet Baking Powder Company! (most of us still have some of that in our kitchens!) - also the iconic/original Calumet colors - "Devil's Red and Blue" silks - were worn on the jockeys of Calumet's 2 Triple Crown Champions - "Whirlaway" - 1941 - famous for his SUPER long tail.. and Citation in 1948 - - - - many of the Champion thoroughbreds of today still have Citation in their bloodlines.. So - I hope you feel like you have been on a VIP tour of a Bluegrass Horse Farm?? Next I will take you on a virtual Bourbon Trail tour.. - LOL - - - I love it here - would not live anywhere else.. except maybe Venice? but can't afford a gondola!
@@jgnetwork2786 Thanks, Jeffrey! I loved the virtual tour of Calumet Farms. The photos are stunning. I can see why you like living there. The lineage of those champion horses is amazing. I have been to the Kentucky Derby twice and always really love the vibe of there. I can't wait for the bourbon tour. I have been on the Jack Daniels tour in Lynchburg, TN! 🙂 Thanks for the great message! :-) Steve
He is a classic narcissist. The first thing that tipped me off is using the word "charm". Charm is not innate, you know when to turn it on and off. We use it to get a job or even a partner, but, boy he must have read up on what these girls love. Once he had his trophy, he went about his own life. How can anyone only be with Hedy 4 times! Wtf?? I bet her brains got in the way. He, at least, must have made his family proud when he went to war. The last gal had everything and was happy that he was, probably, boring. You created an excellent post here about this man. It's a shame he could not continue his admiration for these women. He just reverted back to his true self. I knew it was Jennings Lang who was shot in his jewels but I didn't know he recuperated which is good. I doubt he would like to become a eunich
LOL! Yes, Markey was probably a narcissist! How in the HELL did he get those fabulous women! (HA)
I don't know a thing about Markey, having never heard of the gentleman, but imagine being married to Hedy Lamarr! Truly, one of the most incandescently beautiful women of the Golden age (or any other) of Hollywood. For that alone, he is a character worth knowing about. As always, it's d been educational. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Kerry! Yes, Gene Markey is a peculiar character. 🙂
Another excellent episode! Mr. Markey sounded like a mix of a charmer and a heel wrapped into one. It was very intriguing learning about his romances and I'm very jealous of his involvement with Joan Bennett and Myrna Loy. What a lucky son of a gun! Can't wait for the next episode ❤
I enjoy your videos, very informative. Thank you. You both are a good team!😊

Fell in love with her when i was a kid seeing The Time of Their Lives!
23:15 "The great Deanna Durbin" -- you got that right! And of course Bob Cummings was in It Started with Eve with Deanna, which might just be my favorite of hers. As for John Hodiak, man do I love Sunday Dinner for A Soldier. ruclips.net/video/SGSRursCNpU/видео.html
Loved Marjorie Reynolds in The Time Of Their Lives, one of my favorite movies.
I love that movie too! So funny! And Marjorie was great. 🙂
So sad, i feel he was murdered. I ve been a fan of Robert Walker since a little girl, he was a great actor. So tragic xxx
It really is a tragic story! Such a waste of talent. He was such a great actor! 🙂
Great to see you guys cover my favorite classic movie decade. Leaving off some of the big movies you mentioned at the outset, I have "Nights of Cabiria," "Written on the Wind," "The Tarnished Angels" and "Sweet Smell of Success" next on my list. Side note: I follow box-office data from this era, and I know there's different places to review data, but there's several blockbusters that should outrank "King Solomon's Mines." Variety's January 10, 1962 list of All-Time B.O. Champs lists "Ben Hur" (#2 overall, just behind "Gone With the Wind") as the biggest 1950s hit, with $40,000,000 in rentals, immediately followed by "The Ten Commandments," "Around the World in 80 Days" and "The Robe" to round out the top five. "King Solomon's Mines" is further down the list, with $4,800,000 in rentals.
I love this actress! She was great in Holiday Inn and could really keep up with Fred Astaire which is no small feat. She deserved more recognition and you are so right that, once again, they didn't know what to do with this eclectic actress.
Love your show!! I just wanted to give you a heads up about "Joe Macbeth." There is a decent copy in it's entirely( although not perfect) on RUclips. I had never heard of the film before but being a Ruth Roman fan I did a little investigating. I'm just getting ready to watch it.
Thank you for your nice message! I found that RUclips version a few months ago and watched it. Such a great film. Ruth Roman and Paul Douglas are fantastic!
Love her films! She was a true beauty
@@JaneMcKee-l4b she really was! So underrated! 😊😊😊

Welcome Mr. Price Richie! Another excellent episode. It always makes me so sad to hear about these actors and actresses who were limited or held back due to the "star system" back in this era of Hollywood. But thanks to your show they get the recognition and attention they deserve. ❤
Always fun to learn about new movies.
Another great episode of old Hollywood trivia. I had never heard of this performer, but am interested in seeing her flicks. I have this terrible curiosity about a tragic tale about the Hollywood sign. Please give me all the information you have about the pathetic figure who jumped to her death from the Sign.
I had a crush on Marjorie Reynolds since I first came across her wonderful performance in "The Time of Their Lives" with Abbott and Costello. What a wonderful half hour you blessed us with today. Thanks both. I love this channel.
Thank you so much! We can't tell you how much your kind word mean to us. 🙂🙂🙂
Welcome, Mr. Price Richie, to the firm! Even in stills, you can tell that Marjorie Reynolds had charisma. The book "Trilby" was adapted into the film, "Svengali", with John Barrymore and Marian Marsh. Last, but not least, "Tailspin Tommy" was one of my dad's nicknames for me.
“And I’m Linda Mason”…..😂😂😂😂! That is hysterical! 🥰🥰 Marjorie Reynolds is a very memorable face from my early days of watching movies/TV.
Welcome to John Price Richie….and he’s from West TN! ❤❤ Doing research for your podcast seems like it would be such a fun and rewarding job! Enjoy, John!!
I recall the Folgers commercials with Virginia.
I have to say that I love King Solomons mine. I have it on DVD. Mostly because of Stewart Granger. Scaramouche is also one of my favorites. The 50s had so many fine movies. Can’t wait for your 60s picks.
