  • On April 30, 1973, California governor Ronald Reagan telephoned President Richard Nixon. Recording devices on the telephone in the Lincoln Sitting Room captured this conversation.
    In the conversation segment, Reagan offers words of support to President Nixon, following the President's April 30 "Address to the Nation about the Watergate Investigations." President Nixon states his priority of building world peace. The two men remark on their good fortune in wives, Nancy Reagan and Thelma ("Pat") Nixon. They touch on that evening's televised address to the nation and the resignations of White House aides H. R. ("Bob") Haldeman and John D. Erhlichman.

      Nixon didn't respect Reagan. He viewed him as a zealot politically, and an intellectual lightweight. Nixon also didn't have very many genuine friends - meaning, outside of political allies like Haldeman and Ehrlichman. Guys who did the things he didn't like doing - for example, Nixon was not the type of person who could fire someone personally, he hated doing it. Nixon was someone who let very few people in. Reagan, being of course an actor for a good half of his life, was more of a natural extrovert although he also, ironically, had very true few friends - his entire life revolved around Nancy - he was different than Nixon in that he didn't have paranoias or insecurities, but because of his upbringing, he let very, very few people in. Most of his most trusted subordinates have felt they never truly knew Reagan, who he was inside. Reagan was a lot softer than his public image. He dreamt, in his diary, repeatedly of a world without nuclear weapons, for example.
      Reagan respected Nixon as a politician in that Nixon was a lot more right wing in the 1950s and 1960s, but at this point, Reagan was not so much being friendly as being respectful to the President - not to Nixon personally. He had a strong code of ethics and he was very disappointed when, a year later, it had turned out Nixon had been lying to the country.
      Nixon, for his part, was not in any sort of friendly mood here. He had just had to fire his two most trusted men, guys who basically ran the government day to day for him, and he had been drinking all day. He was in a dark place emotionally - he said he hoped he would die in his sleep this same night. He also contemplated resigning here in April 1973 after firing Haldeman and Ehrlichman.

    • @ferabra8939
      @ferabra8939 7 лет назад +1

      MN Bluestater Reagan knew he would become President pretty soon. He had in mind 1976 of course, as he knew by then Nixon would be a lame duck at best. By 1973 Nixon still had a strong grip on the GOP and Ronnie was just being nice so that Dick would remember him in three years, apart from their Bohemian Grove meetings. As it was, Reagan was still two presidencies and almost 8 years apart from becoming POTUS, and by 1980 Nixon was just a bad memory in the GOP, so here Ronnie is wasting his time basically.

I think in those days he was a moderate he liked some conservative beliefs butt also had some pretty liberal ones as well . Certainly his type of Republican are extinct the last one being Gerald Ford. I think in todays world Nixon would be a Moderate who begrudgingly votes Republican, as he wouldn’t like how far left the democrats have come . Butt at the same time I don’t think he would have liked certain conservative beliefs on things like guns or social security.
