      They (N.I.) really released Massive X way too soon. Now, 3 years later, it has - through updates - finally become the synthesizer it claimed to be at the beginning. It might actually even be _my favorite synth plugin._ (!)
      Sadly, most people have already long since lost interest in MASSIVE X because of how buggy and disappointing it was when it was first released. (And I can't really blame them... )

    Really good review. In my opinion I say that whatever creates "the sound" of a synth is certain limitations in whatever and wherever it may be. Of course there are synths out there that lend you all control over it's sound design options and user interface, but sometimes when I am facing writers block when creating sounds of synthesis I like to step back and use a synth that is meant to do whatever its restrictions let it be and sometimes some really good sounds come out. Great video I was really curious of this new Massive X.

    I think you are confusing more options with having a quality synth. What IS important is that the concept of a Synth works, not how much options it has. That's why severly limited synths are legends, like the MiniMoog, the 303, the 808, the Korg Volcas. They are all limited, but their concept works and that is what counts. Me: i would never buy the Phaseplant. If i want modular i go with Reaktor and VCV.

    I hate to be that guy but as far as modulation goes. There several synths that have Massive X beat.. Examples: Hive 2.0, Dune 3, Electra2, Serum, UVI Falcon, and Arturia Pigments.. The new UI is terrible! Far too confusing even for someone with experience. Worst of all there's no damn manual!!! Native Instruments is a top shelf company. Yet the delayed a synth for 3-4 months to not have a manual on release?

    at least massive X seems easier to use than massive. It has a lot of presets out of the box. you forgot to mention that it comes straight with the komplete 12 package ... so, it is kind of default synth that you could use after buying it. The new interface looks clean and userfriendly for newbie like myself :). So maybe native-instrument wanted massive X to be a synth for newbie and still get good sound out of it.

  • @ChromeGhost

    How does Phaseplant compare to Serum and Pigments? I think Native Instruments probably weren't finished with Massive X but had to release it. I hope they add more features as time goes by

    • @ComposingGloves
      @ComposingGloves  5 лет назад +2

      I'm not a pigments user at the moment but I think phase plant can stack up against any synth due to its modulation abilities. The audio rate modulation that can freely flow from generator to generator until the modules are maxed out is incredibly useful and something I find myself missing when I open other synths.

    • @ComposingGloves
      @ComposingGloves  5 лет назад +4

      As for serum, it I think in many ways serum has small edges but phase plant has several larger advantages at the moment. The modular approach, the simplicity of moving the parts around, the free flow of and ease of use when it comes to audio and control rate modulation ect... Phase plant still has many things going on behind the scenes with the devs as well that are very exciting. All in all I think phase plant is a very 2019 concept, taking advantage of the innovations over the years and offering a comprehensive package.

  • @evoprox1
    @evoprox1 9 месяцев назад

    While 4 or so years later MX still lacks some basic funtionalities that its predecessor had from the start (e.g. better preset managment) and also lacks some features of other wavetable synths (WT generator and WT import) that thing just sounds awesome right out of the box, so much that my old standbies like Avenger and Synthmaster 1&2 will likely gather some digital dust down the road.

  • @laurenzschneeberger301
    @laurenzschneeberger301 5 лет назад +6

    i don't think functionality and limitlesness was really what NI was going for here. They have Reaktor 6, which easily destroys every single synth on the market in that aspect. I believe Massive X was supposed to be an accessible synth for young producers and not a 'power synth' for sound designers'. I think everybody is misunderstanding what Massive X was really supposed to be.

    • @basscut
      @basscut 5 лет назад +1

      Laurenz Schneeberger Exactly! When it comes to a playable instrument, sometimes less is more as this might improve focus. Too many options are cluttering the space and decision making process. It’s not how much stuff you can pile on, it’s about what you can do with it and mostly (same as with cooking) the more you throw in, the more you loose a specific character. But I do think NI has some work to do here when it comes to GUI, in terms of visual feedback. I assume the Browsers falls short, because we are supposed to use Komplete Kontrol for that, but still we should also have a more organized Browser here as well as an easier to navigate wavetable browser. Also, since we don’t have numeric controls we should at least have some visual feedback in the envelopes.

    Also not sure the UI comment about pages is fair, because if you load up enough stuff in PP it's not like it's really all on one page unless you have a huge monitor; at some point you're going to be scrolling up and down to see things, which is functionally not very different than tabbing across pages. • @hostnik777
    @hostnik777 5 лет назад

    First point: Aren't ALL NI products from now on just going to be Reaktor based? It seems to me they made a strategic choice many years ago that Reaktor would be their own in-house development platform that they could productize different ensembles. Look at anything they've released in the last few years, it's either Reaktor based or a glorified preset pack. It's probably why they're acting like Abysnth doesn't exist, when it is STILL a rad synth that nothing else really replaces, even though it's UI got old in like 2006. So with that Reaktor as platform idea in mind, I seriously doubt they're going to open up Massive X, because for instance if you can grab the wavetables and redesign everything in Reaktor yourself, why would you need to buy Massive X?
    Anyway I agree with a lot of what you say, but I'm also with Kill the Noise - you gotta just take any instrument for what it is, and see what you can do with it, instead of coming to it with expectations and entitlements that will keep you from really exploring how far you can push it. I mean don't get me wrong, NI drive me effing crazy with their boneheaded and near-unprofessional product management, but they're still the ONLY company on the market doing everything they do, so it's not really fair to compare anyone else to them. Maybe Arturia.

    First of all how does that Phaseplant sound, I like the look of it. From what you played here the sound quality is way inferior to Massive. You can pile on as many effects as you like, as long as the basic sound sources are not great, you end up with something weak. Like you said, the synth engine is great. Secondly, sometimes less is more when it comes to a playable instrument. Massive X needs work, I expect substantial upgrades.
    Also clearly not a Reaktor instrument, otherwise you would have animation.

    I have to honest say when Cubase came out with Media Bay when all patches were placed in a big data base I was shocked how similar softsynths were sonically. Bells and whistles don’t add up sh*t sonically. In other words softsynths don’t compare to voltage being sent through a real vca/vca. I’m not impressed.

    One filter slot?? No visual feedback, no wavetable import , tricky cofusing GUI , amp envelope hard wired to both oscillators? I hope I'm mistaken about some of this, but if I am, why isn't it obvious to me in the GUI? I've been fooling with it for 2 days. No documentation. Is this thing seriously limited to 3 effects at a time?
    I really wanted to love this thing but I have to agree with you...I bought Phase Plant today and had it figured out in about 5 minutes without looking at the manual. Incredibly flexible and intuitive. Terrible name but who cares? Phase Plant rocks.
    I was unaware of it before your video so thanks for the heads up.

    • @basscut
      @basscut 5 лет назад

      A. W. Bullington Synthesizers traditionally were never about effects. If you can’t make a great sound without adding effects the synth itself is no good. Vice versa many people just add effects to sounds because they don’t know how to make a good preset to start with. Effects are really mostly post production tools imo and part of doing sound design in your DAW.

      My advice would be to get Phase Plant.
      If Massive X got enough patches to compete eventually, get it too.
      Phase Plant including all other kilohearts apps will cost you 10$ a month and you're getting 100$ coupon back after each 12 months of subscription. This is a no brainer.

  • @jazRock13
    @jazRock13 5 лет назад +6

    Lol!! The problem is that people want EVERYTHING TO BE THE SAME as what they already like or what already exists.. You talk about what other synths can do that Massive X can't, but never bothered to explore or highlight what Massive X can do that others can't, like how flexible the routing section is and how the performers are a step up of what we've seen so far.. Is it the next generation Synth though? I think it depends on perspective.. If next generation to you is "more features" or "more of everything", then Massive X is not next generation enough, but if next generation to you is creating unique and exciting sounds (that actually sound good) quickly and effortlessly, Massive X is definitely a contender..

    So you're comparing quantity to quality and latest versions of synths to the first version of Massive X. Maybe it'd be more fair to compare the 1st versions of Massive and PhasePlant to Massive X?
    FFs everyone spends 5 minutes with Massive X and it's the Final Judgement. Y'all are gonna be 'ok it's better now that they updated it' 6 months or a year from. Y'all need to hold your horses and spend some quality time playing with the synth instead of whining about how the 1st version of it isn't Gods Jizz

    • @hostnik777
      @hostnik777 5 лет назад

      I'll defend it a little too, but to be fair, NI are to blame for hyping and then delaying this damn thing for well over a year. And it's not really "the 1st version" in most people's minds, because it's using the name of their previous flagship synth. While that may not be accurate or not, again, it's down to NI to create and manage expectations; in this case I think their habits of overhyping shit caught up to them, even if I think in the end it's pretty cool.

    • @Nomo_Popo
      @Nomo_Popo 5 лет назад

      @@hostnik777 You don't think they wanted to realease it as it is, do you? Shit happens sometimes; it's why they had to delay it. Instead of delaying it again they decided let us play it as is. What they should have at least done is have it as a beta state. I admit they could've been more communicative.

    • @hostnik777
      @hostnik777 5 лет назад

      Problem is if you don't start with the same wavetables and filters, it's going to be hard to get a close enough approximation to do an accurate comparison. I guess you could do that with bread and butter stuff like square and 24db ladder filters, but that's going to miss a lot of the individual character of each instrument.

    No it isn't. It is extremely disappointing. It is unusable on my MacBook Pro laptop - can't even play the presets - so utterly CPU heavy. The UI looks cool but makes zero sense, not intuitive. Phase Plant is the next gen synth and Serum is still a best, both of those two will continue to dominate. Massive X is really unfinished and a huge let down. Presets sound great, have no idea how to make anything useful on it thus far. It doesn't even have unison per oscillator (as far as I can tell). I wouldn't buy it if you're on the fence. If you have hopes they will fix it / improve then maybe (which is my only hope right now).

Regardless of CPU performance, on the iMac I still feel it is way over hyped and way underwhelming. Phase Plant beats it hands down IMHO.

      To be fair, Composing Gloves hasn't even USED the synth yet, and this is just a first impression of the synth. He has no experience with how the effects sound, the filters sound, the osc warping functions sound, just that there isn't a lot of them to use at the same time. Massive X seems to have really cool and wild effects, filters, and osc warps that produce really cool sounds, which Composing Gloves seems to sense intuitively when listening to the presets, just hasn't explored yet. All he sees is the functionality flaws, and sadly, that's all you and his viewers are going to see if this is the only video they watch on Massive X. On the topic of the functionality flaws, it's not impossible that Native Instruments are going to address this in future updates some time soon.

    Your voice is like.. mmmmm, your facial hair is like.. mmmmm. This review was like.. mmmmmmm.
    The thing that matters at launch with Massive X is that the sound engine works great and that there are enough features so we can start using it. This is just the start and no doubt the feature set will increase ”massively” in the next few years. NI now has a ton of feedback and as they are campaigning this as THE synth for the next decade i’m sure they won’t stop developing it further now.
