Compound Turbo Design and Sizing Working on First Gen Trailer Towing Power House with Area Diesel

  • In this video I take a dive into the components I will be using to build a Compound Turbocharger Setup for my Dodge Cummins 12V. This setup is designed with driveability and useable power in mind more so than a racing max power setup. Increasing fuel mileage and lowering EGT's is a desired benefit. Follow along for the build and for the results. Also be sure to check out Area Diesel's video ‪@AreaDieselService‬ on machining the exhaust housing and subscribe to their channel as they have good diesel content on a broad array of topics. Thanks for watching!

    Area Diesel has a good guy in the videos. I enjoy listening to him, using the correct terminology and describing everything correctly as I listen to fact check him lol. He really seems to know his stuff and I intend to use them in the future for injectors and such. Brian get rid of those 3.07's! In my opinion they really load the engine and make it work all the time. Especially towing and with the awful gaps in the Getrag. Happy to see you doing more 1stgen Cummins content, the stuff I know you for.

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02  2 года назад +3

      I like the 3.07 for towing because I can run in 4th and not kill the tranny. With no trailer it is very free running even in 5th. With the right turbo setup it should be strong in that 1500-2500rpm range I usually run in. The Ve fuel falls off with rpm so I can make more power and torque by making a setup that lives down low. Also it is nice to just come off idle and bam it is gone like a 450+cid gas engine. 🙂

    This will be a fun series to watch! I’m running an HX40 over an HT3B in my 2nd gen 12V. The 40 was modified by Piers Diesel wayyy back when which helped the lag. It’s pretty old school still a bit laggy (as you mention) but it’ll move enough air to burn all the fuel I can hose through a set of DDP4 injectors. I do tow a lot and egt’s are rarely a concern.
    You’re going to love this setup!

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02  2 года назад +1

      That was a really common setup 15 years ago. I can even remember installing some of those kits. Lots of them used the stock turbo with a 21cm exhaust and the 3b they still made a huge difference in gets. Curios how far back you got yours is your engine fire ringed or piano wired gasket?

    • @woodenhead8887
      @woodenhead8887 2 года назад +2

      @@bcbloc02 it was probably back in about 2004, like you said it was common back then. I ran the modified 40 as a single for several years before adding the rest. The head is “o-ringed”. It’s been a pretty reliable setup for me, I ran it for years on my ‘96, then bought a ‘98 12V back in 2013 and swapped everything into that truck.

It is still going with over 300K miles now only had the valves adjusted and a couple of fuel transfer pumps.

      I have a 63/71/14 on my truck now and super laggy gonna upgrade to compounds just can’t decide between a he351 62/65, 63/68/12 or 62/65/12 paired with a 171702 75/96/1.32 or a s480 with a 1.10-1.25 AR. If you have any recommendations of which s480 to run or opinions on the combination I would appreciate it.
      Truck is a daily driver and would like to still be able to tow my 10,000lb camper here and there (once a year at most) looking for a 600-700hp. It seems anything over 750hp and daily driven don’t mix.

      @@bcbloc02 It's not exactly right, but it now seems to work. Now the URL has a rogue "=0s" on the end. I think your browser (or YT) is trying to be 'smart' and making a URL designed to 'continue' where you personally left off. Not sure how one normally copy/pastes a raw URL into a YT description box. You may get a best URL by going to the video and using the 'Share' button and copying the URL it shows there. I know a bit about computers (my career world for 30+ years), but they never cease to come up with new ways to do unexpected things. grrr.

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02  2 года назад +1

      If you tow compounds are the way to go. Empty truck you have a lot of options depending on how you want the power curve. Yes my truck will stay a VE the built in timing advance allows for superior driveability and fuel mileage versus a p-pump although it does power limit you. I( am power limited by my radiator size anyway as the frontal area of these trucks isn't enough to cool over 600hp i don't think regardless of what radiator you put in it. My common rail buddies find they can't run over about 500hp continuous or coolant temps eventually heat soak and they derate. Of course they are grossing 40k to be putting down that kind of hp for several minutes pulling grades.

OK my BMW has a turbo and a traction battery . here is my question do these turbos operate in parallel or series ? , a BMW we had a couple of years ago was badged twin turbo , but the mark one eyeball could only see one , I assumed it had vanes in it to alter the boost , it worked well and did not have a noticeable lag but that may have been the 8 speed steptronic box and the ECU making adjustments on the fly .
    How's Bailey doing ? the Bailey we sponsored is now with his blind owner and is doing very well . latest one is Kevin , that makes 8 dogs we have sponsored though their training

      The 72E outflows the old 75. Either would be very tapped out at 1000rwhp I would think you would need to be at an 80 or bigger to support a solid grand to the tires.

      @@bcbloc02 true.. but upgrading within a frame size shouldn't be too hard.. in "fun mode" 1000hp would be nice, but it won't have to live at that power level long.. it'll probably be half that most of the time. What did you figure peak power capability would be from your setup? Staying with the VE pump you're probably going to be fuel limited more than anything

      @@Rx7man I doubt it will ever be over 500rwhp with the 12mm VE My goal is to have egt's stay under 1200deg under all conditions. Peak power for this setup should be right at a grand if egts and fueling were not an issue.
