Making the RYOBI Dethatcher BETTER! | No more BAG!

- I've had the RYOBI Dethatcher for a few years now, and it has proven to be a workhorse. My yard always looks amazing, once I have removed all the thatch, moss and dead grass that accumulates over the winter.
The one thing I never liked was the collection bag. My lawn generates a lot of debris, and the collection bag filled up QUICK. So I took it off and let the debris fall to the lawn for later collection.
If I just let the rear flap close because the collection bag isn;t attached, the debris piles up inside the machine, slows the raking cylinder down, and then drops a big clumps after a dozen feet or so, like its making hay bails on a farm. If I pull the flap up with a bungee cord, the debris flies out the back and covers me in dust and clippings. I needs a regular solution!
SO I jumped into SketchUp and modeled up two wedges that would clip into the machine on the collection bag detents. They hold the flap open just enough to let the debris come out the back without piling up, but not so much that it flies out in my face. The perfect solution!
Check out how it works, and its always great to see the dethatcher in action.
If you are interested in getting a set of these wedges, you can down load the file from my Etsy store and print them yourself, or have me print and ship you a set!

Just get 2mm thick 40x40mm aluminium L profile (can probably be 30x30 or 50x50 or smth aswell) and cut to 40,5cm length, put to bracket and done. You can position the L profile two ways, to close or to open the back flap. It cannot fall out, can only come out from top. You can thank me later.
Thank you for the idea!
Oh, by the way, I make my living producing videos and their associated products. So there is that...
I just bought a set and put them in. I won't be able to try it until spring. I am a little worried about them falling out. I may drill a hole in the wedge and the dethatcher and put a keyring cable through it just in case. I am glad I ordered it in the bright green. I think it will be easier to see if it does fall out.
Let me know if any changes need to be made to the design. I can incorporate and send you a new set.
This is great. I have the ryobi thatcher and that bag is my only complaint. When using the print to ship link to your etsy, it takes me to your item page that is confusing. You are showing images for this item but the description is for your vac attack adapter for black n decker. I just want make sure before purchasing that I am on the right item page. I figure you placed the wrong description on the page either that or the wrong images for the described item. Thank. Great invention.
I'll get that fixed.. but that is the correct link.
I’m surprised the little plugs didn’t fall out because of vibration.
The door pushes down pretty good.
If you have a band saw just go ahead and cut one out. Better yet, use a coping saw.
Not very exciting. The 3D printed ones are popular now!
What filament type do you use?
Overture Matte Grass Green PLA.

A fellow WA and still serving Army dude here who loves Ryobi and 3d printing. I’ve only used PLA and was just wondering if it had held up in summer heat. I’m currently down in TX, looking at buying this dethatcher for this year’s lawn work.
@BradleyCourson I have PETG and have printed with it as well. Never had any complaints.
I just use a bungee strap.
What's the fun in that..
Should have made a template out of cardboard first
That's a thought!
