STORYLINE:
US President George W.Bush welcomed the president of Brazil to his wooded presidential retreat on Saturday for round two of their talks about trade and ethanol in less than a month.
Bush and first lady Laura Bush greeted President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the first Latin American leader Bush has entertained at Camp David.
Bush got behind the wheel of a golf cart, emblazoned with "Golf Car One" on its bonnet, and he and Silva drove off for their talks.
Mrs. Bush told Silva she'd see him at dinner and then drove another cart in a different direction.
Biofuels and the deadlock in world trade talks, known as the Doha Round, dominated Bush and Silva's discussion in Sao Paulo earlier this month, first stop on Bush' five-nation tour of Latin America.
The talks, named after the city in Qatar where they were launched in 2001, stalled last year.
Developing countries were upset because rich nations would not make significant cuts in farm subsidies and demanded greater access to markets in the developing world.
No major breakthrough was expected at Camp David.
The two leaders' talks on ethanol will follow up a Memorandum of Understanding to promote the international production of ethanol signed by the two countries on 9 March, 2007.
But Silva on Friday reiterated Brazil's position that the alternative fuel will not gain worldwide support unless the United States drops a 53-cent-per-gallon tariff on Brazilian ethanol.
He told the Washington Post newspaper that US subsidies for the American maize-based ethanol programme have pushed up US cereal prices by about 80 percent, enough, he said, to threaten world food prices through its effect on meat and soya costs.
Ethanol could eventually help wean the US off its need for foreign oil, officials say, lessening the energy dependence on volatile Middle Eastern nations and Venezuela - whose President Hugo Chavez has long been hostile to Washington.
American grain-growers are fearful that any ethanol deal with Brazil will bring down corn prices and lawmakers from the Corn Belt have already registered their complaints with Bush.
