Hi everyone, This is the final video that I shot for the month off. I'm really excited to get back to making videos Tomorrow. I hope you are all staying safe out there.
Loved it. I'm in for the guitar stories. I drive truck and my practice time is really lacking right now. Hearing about guitars still keeps that fire burning! Thanks
Robert Baker Hi! You mentioned Austin’s review of your Les Paul, but, I didn’t see the link in the description. Can you share?
That little part of the lick you're playing sounds like Jackyl 🤔. "Down on me"
Don't dust it, it'll lose its mojo!
I come here for hair tips, but I never get any.
my LP story ... I saw it on craiglist I gave the guy money and it's in my house now
lol a guy really wanted my PRS since he's a collector and everything's locked down, so he offers to trade his 2016 LP Traditional and now here it is.
Great story, gotta love the Wife.
Back in 2001 my Wife spied an email I sent to a friend gushing about a guitar I'd spotted on Ebay.
At the time I had no plans to purchase a guitar, let alone a Les Paul and my current #1 was a Strat (also purchased for me by my Wife).
Anyways, the reason I was so excited about the Ebay Les Paul I'd spotted is because I'd never ever seen one like it before (a 1986 LP Custom, Mahogany neck, natural top and a maple fingerboard).
To my total surprise and shock my Wife purchased it for me without my knowledge.
Talk about a freak-out, come home from work and find THAT guitar sitting on our couch.
Yeah, she is a keeper for sure, the guitar is a keeper as well!
Your wife just wanted you to man up and have a REAL guitar as your number 1 and not some silly Strat! Pfft what's next , you gonna tell us the Strat is some fancy looking really beautiful red color or something?
hehehehehehe....................
This les Paul and Danish Pete's purple Tele are some of the finest guitars on the internet. 😍
Gotta throw Pete Thorn's '64 Strat on that list.
Check this one out Robert.
In the early 90's a new music store opened up in town. I stopped by to see what all they had and had been there for a while when I saw a guy walk in that I knew. We talked a bit and it turns out he had a guitar that he wanted to sell. I went with him to go ask what he could get for the guitar. When we opened the original hard shell case it had a 79 Gibson LP KM in it! It's been played a lot and has paint that's been rubbed off a little on the neck and where the arm rests when playing. Patina the real way. The guy offered my friend $700 for it, I told my friend that I'd give him $700 for it and he accepted! I walked out that day with my first LP! And even cooler still he gave me several boxes of guitar player magazines from the 70's. I still own the guitar and definitely agree that it would be one of the last I'd ever sell. It's sunburst and also has the custom made plaque behind the tail piece.
Nice! That won't happen again to you.
Great story 👍👍
My friend and I went to Veneman's Music in Rockville, Maryland in the mid 80s. We found a beautiful used Gibson Les Paul for under $350. My friend said we should buy it together and I agreed. I later changed my mind and told him I wanted to purchase it myself. I did.
I loved it and made it a part of my collection. This Les Paul happens to be a 1979 Gibson Les Paul Standard KM in tobacco sunburst. It is a great compliment to my 1965 Fender Stratocaster.
I remember Veneman's Music when I first started playing back in the mid-eighties. It was a pretty big dealer in guitars and gear throughout the mid-Atlantic. They even had a catalog, if I remember correctly.
@@offbeatbassgear Your memory is good. I remember drooling over that catalog. I think it was around Memorial Day they would have a store blow out 30% off everything in the store. I drove 100 miles to get there and the line getting in was huge. I bought my Gibson Les Paul with the 30% discount. Those were the days.
Rob, bro you're lucky that your lady shares the love of guitars. She's a keeper, both the guitar and your wife. ❤🤘
I always wanted a Le Paul. Sometime in the early 20s I asked my wife if I could get one of the reissue 60s models(after all they are not cheap and it is our money). SHe said I earned it. I knew I could never play as well as the guitar sounded, but I got it and love it.
That LP looks amazing
My no.1 is my 1989 Fender MIJ 57 reissue in cream. Bought it new in 1990 and it's had a fret job, new pickup switch, and a Lil 59 in the bridge, but it has a big fat neck and great Strat tone. My 2 year old daughter was obsessed with it, and I had it in mind that she would inherit it one day. She died of cancer before her 3rd birthday, so I kind of think of it as her guitar now, and I could never sell it. Plus, it is just a great Strat!
My number one is a LP too! It's a 2019 LP traditional and it took me twenty years to get a nice guitar. This is the nicest thing I've ever owned and it is special. It's a player and has incredible tone. So much money and no guarantee that the guitar will be a special one regardless of cost but it is! I only ever played cheaper guitars for two decades because it's what I had.. when I had one at all. There seems to be a permanent honeymoon period for me with my Lester. I've had it about a year and I think about it when I go to sleep and when I wake. I play and play and i love it! Now, i don't play my other guitars and I'm in the boat of needing a backup for this because i couldn't imagine the pain of going without it. It is THE one for me and i don't even care about gear anymore! Good luck with yours Robert. And for everyone else, i hope you find your "one guitar" soon! Good luck.
"yea I don't even think I need any other guitars"..... "you always say that!" LMAO. Literally the same conversation I've had 4 or 5 times with my wife. Glad the Paul went to an owner who is gonna love and use it. It'd be a shame if it just sat in a case
Gorgeous Les Paul. I really just love them all. I don't care if its an Epi or Gibson, I just love the feel and sound.
A strat, Tele, SG, ES, Explorer, warlock, jazz master, Mustang or any other guitar you can think of is just that, a guitar. But the Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul is a work of art! I have had several people who do not play or know the first thing about a guitar see my guitar collection or be looking online with me at guitars and every time it comes to a Les Paul they all stop and just stare at it and most of them have said the same thing, "that guitar right there (as they point to the LP) it's different than the rest, it looks more like a work of art than just a plain ol' guitar." to which I usually respond, "good eye!".
I love your Les Paul so much dude! I hope you and the family are staying healthy \m/
Ayyyyy
Ayyyy
Ayyyy
Ayyyyy
A friend of mine is a big-shot guitarist (don't want to name-drop) and he can easily buy the whole Gibson section of any Guitar Center, yet he values his modded and beat-up Korean Epiphone LP that he got on Craigslist for a little over $100 when he was just dabbing into LP style guitars and didn't want to break a buck. He writes most of his music on it and considers it his prime possession. Other than moving houses and one urgent luthier intervention, that guitar hasn't seen the light of day for more than a decade as he's mortified that something will happen to it. I consider it a great honor that he lets me (gently!) play it when I visit him 😁
Great video as always, love that les paul...listening to you play that beast, it obviously inspires you. Hope the fam is staying heathy and looking forward to your next video!
Thank you very much for the uploads, Bob.
Holy CRAP, dude! That solo you ripped in the footage from REVV was AWESOME! You are SOOO much better than you give yourself credit for. DAAAAAAMN!
10:30 that’s freaking impressive and that Les Paul just looks so damned good. I have a 2011 Gibson custom R8 Les Paul myself
I always wanted a Gibson Les Paul. A couple weeks ago I gave in a bought one. The Gibson Les Paul tribute tobacco burst my favorite color and a few days ago I finally had it delivered and as soon as I opened the case I fell right in love definitely my #1 for the rest of my days
Fun vid, and some great playing! Stay safe!
I love the finish.
I have those double creams on my 78' custom. It's a cherry burst and the grain on the top looks very similar to yours as far as that center piece looking different than the surrounding pieces. Back is solid as well.
1980 silverburst les Paul custom, got from original owner. Has that neck you mentioned. Previously modded with stainless steel frets and a vintage Duncan distortion in bridge with newer pots. I did get the original parts too. This is my number one. Wife knows it and will not sell, I will pass it one to my son one day
Evansville guitar center always has the works
Robert love your utube channel lots of support from this guy. Try a 80s metal special sometime. From the 80s so anything is great. Stay healthy and wash your hands
I recently picked a new Gibson Les Paul tribute 2019 model in honeyburst. Went in ready to get a standard and played 6 of them before having a go with the tribute it's super comfy and sounded great plus with a little one rubbing around the house Les worried about the odd ding. Sounds great and love the satin finish. And also got a 2019 American professional mystic seafoam Tele 👌 might aswell enjoy being in lockdown haha
Love your videos Robert. Your les Paul is so cool. Thanks for sharing this. I was wondering if you could do a video on who sets up your guitars. Do you do them yourself? Do you use an experienced luthier? It would be cool to know how you go about maintaining your guitars and if you keep them in a temp/humidity controlled environment.
I love that you love a guitar! Some hardware just works its way into ones soul...
It sounds great 👍
Nothing is better than running some blues licks on my midnight blue with a blue tortoise shell pickguard strat....got the tex mex pickups
Robert - There is a mint condition, 79 Tobacco finish Kalamazoo LP on Reverb. Check it out!
Robert Baker Great story man and what a gorgeous guitar!! It sounds amazing and just screams rock and roll. My pride and joy is my 06 Gibson SG. Always been a fan of the look and inspired by guys like Angus Young, Frank Zappa and Derek Trucks so I knew I had to have one. After years of searching and saving, I finally got one and she's my baby. Everything about her just feels right, I also have her plugged straight into a 50W Marshall JCM 800. She just rips, but anyways, that's my story and thank you for sharing yours. Love your channel man and keep up the good work.
This was a entertaining video thanks for posting, I still have my 1980 Les Paul Standard Natural finish says K.M. in black marker under the Truss Rod cover probably one of the last ones made there, paid 575.00 with case !
I said it before and I’ll say it again.....that is absolutely one of the most beautiful LP’s I’ve seen.
Always wanted a les paul, hopefully i can get it one day, awesome guitar there 😁👍
My local guitar center is that exact store! Crazy to think this guitar was there
It's funny how you just know when it's the guitar for you. It's a very rare feeling but everything feels right in that moment when you see it and play
I own a 79 with a normal single piece body and a two piece maple top. No pancake or multi piece tops. These limited edition Kalamazoo guitars are really nice. They’re about to sky rocket in price as the normal production les Pauls really lack that QC
Just got a Gold Top! Love it😈
here is my Guitar Story, Rob ...
the only, and first new guitar I bought was a LP Goldie
1970 production
it has a 3 pc neck, a 5 pc body, the low frets that I fukkn hate
but at 15 years old, I did not know better
I had a Rosewood veener put over the top, plated all the hardware brass, gold grovers that went with the brass hardware
but it still suxx
did I mention hacking out the p'up cavities to put in full size SD Super Distortions ..??
anyways, I still have this, it has not been stolen like so many othrs
this SHOULD be a good "guitar story" .. :)
HAAAAAA!!!
Somewhere there is a guitar player for every guitar and guitar for every guitar player. I know I found mine too Rob. Congrats man
THIS guitar is the reason why I switched from a strat to a les paul. I never looked back
Looks like today I'm playing guitar/bass before drums, you always do this to me, hahaha. Hope you & the family are staying safe, take it easy...
It is a very beautiful, unique looking and great sounding Les Paul. To be honest , I first thought that it was possibly a Deluxe that had had full sized humbuckers fitted; that isn't a criticism as I also love Deluxes !
My dad got me a squire strat for Christmas two years ago, a year later I decided to fix it up. I put a gold pickguard on it to go with the black finish and got new tuning machines. Come to find out, the holes were too small (it was some weird size that diddnt fit 10mm) so I was dumb enough to try and widen the holes. I ruined that neck and have been on a quest to get a new one ever since. I ordered one from warmoth, but right as it was about to ship, Seattle gets shut down because of the coronavirus. I'm still waiting for that neck and cant wait for it to come in. (I know its just a squire but it still means a lot to me)
Can I ask how you ruined the neck by just trying to open the tuner holes up a bit?
I don’t have anything really overly interesting about my favourite guitar, it’s a squire telecaster. Which isn’t great and I’ve gotten a few instruments since then, but it’s been my favourite since I got it. I’m a big ELO fan and so in 2001 they did a concert, Jeff Lynne the lead singer and guitarist played a telecaster he bought back in the 60s, so me being a big fan I begged me dad for it, and he got it for me. The one thing about that concert that really made pushed me into wanting a Tele was the group playing Roll Over Beethoven, of course since then I’ve learnt it on the Tele and it’s just great. I adore the sound and the feel, I never got it professionally set up but since then I’ve learnt a lot about all that stuff. But that is my favourite instrument that I just can’t put down. Cheers!
Its such a beast
Cool video man, was this the fractal or a amp?
At times that les Paul neck pickup sounded like a strat, really nice
Wrote that before he goes into saying it sounds like a tele on steroids, really nuts how he gets thst sound
Cut the riffs, jam the fills, encapsulate the leads... Own that song bud!!
Hey, what other than your awesome guitar did you use for that OMG crunch tone?
My gibson eds 335: it was born in 1964 and it was red. But things was a little moore rock n roll back in the day so the neck was broken. So it when back to gibson, fixed the neck and it have to have a repaint to look good and they ask’d about what color owner wanted. «Does it come in black» just the custom orders so it become black. The owner had it for 30 Years before he got sick and sold it to a blues guy from norway(srv lvl guy) and now he had Gotton old and cannot gig anymore. So he trade’d it to me with a new one, so long i gig with it :) well i do all the time at fine places :) last job was for the ADHD club in norway at the biggest hotel in Oslo and it sounds magical with the cranked marshall silver jubliee 🤘🏻😎 named «Linda»
Actually the very last Les Paul made in Kalamazoo, Michigan was a Les Paul Custom in 1984 before the factory closed for good; guitars were still made there even during the Nashville plant that opened in 1974 so your LP was likely one of the last to be made in Kalamazoo in '79. What kind of pickups are in it?
i have a strat i love and a tele i love but honestly when i need to let it rip for awile nothing is as fun as firing up the Marshall and playing my les paul. Mine is not fancy and some may even argue that its not a true les paul but that matters not to me. Its a 2013 Gibson LPJ. The name is confusing it does not mean les paul junior but as far as i know Gibson never clarified it. Basically in 2013 it was "the year of the paul" or some such anniversary. It is all Les Paul spec it has a 2 piece maple cap a full quarter of an inch and a mahogany back. The neck is maple and i have no issue with that. It is sprayed with nitro similar to the faded stuff. I replaced the 490s and put a set of low output hand wound alnico 2 pickups from a company called Dominger. They are the "whiskisippi" and try to emulate that 70s tone from Dwayne Allman and other 70s gibson players. I do recommend them for that 70s sound that only humbuckers and plexi style amps can do. A nitro covered guitar takes on a natural form of relicing over a few thousand hours of use. I love that.
thanks Robert
I remember the original video VLOG!
Hey Buddy, yeah man that's a keeper. Beautiful, what pups do you have in it ? I assume it is wired 50's vs. Modern. I changed my 74 Custom over from modern to vintage putting the tone after the volume pots. It was like someone took a wet blanket of the guitar. Sounds great, keep up the awesome vids. Thanks
Hey Bud, never mind about the pups question, after seeing the whole video, I heard you say they were T Tops. Thanks Again
Man, your wife is awesome!! I wish mine was so understanding. Haha!!
I’m still looking for one that makes me sound good. Lol.
Nice story & true you must own a Les Paul - it's one of the 'Holy Trinity'
I'm the total opposite. I've bought and sold (at a loss) a bunch of guitars. But back in 1990 I bought my very first, a Profile, a brand which was known for having some great guitars and some stinkers. I got one of the good ones, a super-strat though I didn't know that term at the time.
Despite all the others which have come and gone, I still have that one, and always end up falling back in love with it.
sounds as good as a 59 , nice .
IM SOOOOOOOO curious what you paid.. there currently going for around $6000 right now
I kinda need to see the Revv video.
Beautiful guitar. I love my Jackson soloist. Won’t ever sell it.
Odd story because it starts with an sg standard I worked my butt off for in high school but it got stolen a couple years after buying it. Major bummer. A friend of my dads heard and said, “hey man I have a guitar you can use in the meantime and if you like it I’ll sell it to you.” I took him up on it and he dropped it by and I opened the case it was a 79 custom in wine red. It was love at first said and without playing it I asked him how much. It was a smoking deal and I paid him there. Still have that guitar and it is currently getting a refret. Cheers man. Love the guitar stories
My first guitar was a samick Greg Bennett d1 acoustic I saw at guitar center about five years ago. I asked the guy how much and he said it was $40. I couldn’t believe it was that cheap. Having grew up around guitars and always wanted to play I figured I couldn’t go wrong. The thing has this great country twang to it I was sold. That started my path and now I have 14. Looking back it was a terrible first guitar because it’s not an easy guitar to play even though it will reward you with great tone for your efforts. Learning chords on it my fingers were numb to the touch.
Hi to everyone. Do you know how can I download tabs from your Website?. Dropbox links are not working and I need some tabs from your older youtube videos. Thank you very much!
That seems like a killer Les Paul and I’m glad you found it. That said, I’m a little surprised your pre-CBS Strat hasn’t become your new number 1. Do you consider that your second favorite?
I know your a Two Notes guy, they have had the UA OX out for a while now plus Boss decides to get into the game with their Wazacraft attenuator with built in IR'cabs. Has anybody here used any of the Three?
It is a cool story Robert, it was obviously meant to be and that guitar suits you perfectly.
Hey I'd be curious to know how much did that set you back...KM?
Imo your #1 should never be to special to gig ! But to each there own ...cheers 🤘
smokey LP ❤️
my first gibson les paul story... My wife and i were in a shop one day, and i played a les paul goddess, liked it and went na cnt afford it. On my way putting it back, i saw a standard faded, and said we better high tail it outta here!! So few mo later we came into a little cash, and she said go buy it. Took a gd buddy with me fm waayy back. we both play and i wanted his opinion. The guitar wz 1600 n came with a gig bag!! I had not even, and hvnt since laid that kinda coin down for an axe. So i said i wont buy it if he dosent throw in a case. Got there, and idk, that goddess dnt soun good that day. He grabbed the faded and said try this one. AHHHHAA!!! Hit an a chord, and that wz it. 1749 with case and extras 1800 total!! Paula was meant for me!! Shes a 2008 that wz feb 2009, had er 11yrs now. You just know when its right man!!
I remember seeing a video of you and your wife on a road trip to buy a guitar awhile back. That must’ve been the video 🙂
Yeah that's totally the one. Hard to believe that was almost 6 years ago now
Why does that LP twang so hard?
I wish I could find a cool guitar that has that mojo... I found a heritage I really liked but damn thing felt like it weighed 12 lbs... I don't even mind heavy guitars but damn. Sadly everyone seems to be selling on Reverb to get more eyes on them, but If I'm spending 2k+ on a guitar, I'm putting my hands on it first. Still waiting for that magic guitar shop moment that makes me just say "I'm not leaving without this."
That guitar rules. No super guitar stories...not yet at least
It kinda sounds like Jake Kiszka's 59 Les Paul, or as he says, a big tele.
It’s a 61 Les Paul SG not a 59
What's the story on the "battle wounds"?
Is this a vintage burst finish?
My number 1? Its a navy blue Silvertone Strat that cost me the grand total of $40. $24 for the guitar and $16 for shipping. And I love the thing! 😎 It was 1/6 the price of my other guitar and its a better guitar 😁
It has to speak to you
Can you tell me when Gibson stopped using mother of pearl for their inlays
7387470 ....
MOP is still used on LP Custom and other high end models. Mother of toilet seat (lol) has always been used on LP Standards. I think they don't look right any other way.
Question: Is there any Value in buying a US Fender Elite Strat? I believe there being replaced by Ultra?
Hey, do you sub to "The Trogly's guitar show" YT channel? If not, you should, Robert has even bought guitars from him lol. He began his channel just reviewing and selling Gibson's but over the last year or so he has been expanding into Fender and has had many of them on his channel now. He does answer questions in the comment section sometimes, but he also has a web site and on there you can ask him for advice, but he does charge for that, i think it's like $5? He has different price points depending on what info you need. At the very least if you just left him a comment, there are also a lot of viewers with a lot of knowledge and one of them might be able to help you.
Is that a Gold Top behind you?
KM stands for Kalamazoo Model, not just Kalamazoo. It is not unique for any time period. It is one prototype to a guitar called “The 1980 Heritage Series”. The Gibson Co wanted to go into “the 80s” with a ‘59 reissue. This particular prototype had nothing to do with ‘59 specs. It came from Gibson vs the builders.
The builders built the next bad ass LP but the Co wanted an old ‘59..
At the time this was ridiculous because, Norlin was building the necks and the Gibson pickups were so beyond the old style pickups. Norlin necks were only around from roughly 1977 to 1982…so their necks had NOTHING to do with any reissue. People also say the “Dimarzio holds a patent on the double cream pups” which is bull because at the time Dimarzio was basically a mail order direct replacement parts place, IOW “the patent” on the colors didn’t come until years later.
Bottom line is this guitar is the prototype to the Heritage Series. The KM is a killer guitar that got dumped. It’s was a great guitar for the future of Gibson, with the Norlin neck, but Gibson wanted a rehashed ‘59. So, we got the “Heritage Series” as well as Gibson breaking up onto Gibson…and a great slap in the face…Heritage Guitars
I can tell you way more about this guitar more than “the mojo” and “the blog”. Hit me up. I think for 2022 my quest will be the end all quintessential KM video. Neither you or any others who I’ve watched really know what they are playing.
Wife sells the guitars is a guitarist's worst nightmare lol
Tele on steroids! 😂
Woke up one morning back in 1987 and going through the classified ads in the local newsrag I saw an ad for a Gibson Les Paul with a 60-watt Peavey tube amp for $400. I didn't play guitar, and sadly really still don't, but was a big Jimmy Page and loved the Les Paul so I gave the guy a call. I was the second caller so he took my number and said if the other guy didn't want it he'd let me know. Four hours later he hadn't called and I assumed it was gone, but the phone rang and he said the guy had sat and played it for about an hour and said he had to think about it. I didn't really know shit about guitars but I figured if it was good enough that he played it for an hour it was worth $400. I never really put the time in the learn to play well but I do sit down from time to time with it, and it has been used by a few friends to record over the years. What I ended up with is a heavily gigged and roadworn 1969 Les Paul Custom Ebony. Lots of buckle rash and wear from being played, lots of small parts replaced over the years due to breakage and/or wear, but still has the original pots, patent sticker T-tops, Sprague capacitors, and no body repairs. Sounds and plays fantastic and looks like it has stories to tell, can't think of anything more I'd want.
is this a repost? it seems really familiar
Yeah I took this one down when I first uploaded it because of an audio issue and never re uploaded it till now
So you know the old saying - do you have trouble keeping it in tune? This is my only concern with buying one.
Honestly i make that joke all the time but all mine stay in tune with no issues.
@@RobertBakerGuitar Yeah, I see it in comments all the time then I see guys rippin' on them all the time with no issues. Definitely my next purchase. Thank you for your time.
Unless the neck is moving/not out of properly dried wood or the bridge posts are badly seated, any guitar can be made to fairly keep in tune, drastic headstock angles be damned. With a well cut nut and quality machine heads it should stay in tune fairly consistently, unless you're heavily into 2-step bends...
Ok my #1 is the only electric I own. I bought my Mitchell ms400 last year in March. I researched a bunch of other guitars and I wanted the greatest low budget guitar I could find and I went to order it BRAND NEW from guitar center because it wasn't in stock atm and I ordered it for $330 (big mistake). So they ordered the guitar from their warehouse in L.A. A week goes by and it's delivered to the house and right away I knew something was wrong. It had Tennessee stickers instead of L.A and when I opened it up ot wasn't even in a big bag ot was all bubble wrap. So when I take it out I was quick to notice it was not brand new. It had some missing strings some dings and scratches and when I flipped it over to look at the contour that starts on the side of the guitar there was a HUGE dent. The whole side where the contour was supposed to be was now flat and had a giant lacquer crack. I took it back to guitar center, they took that one back and ordered another one. That one I had delivered to the store and this one was brand new but someone must have damaged it when shipping it cause it had a couple chips on the front. Long story short I finally got a brand new one the THIRD guitar. So I named it trinity lol and 3 is my lucky number and I'm Christian so trinity fits perfectly. I also got a sweet leather strap for free that just pops with the most beautiful honey burst top I've ever seen. Some people would have taken the second one because it gives it "character" and I know I'm all for that but I want to give my own guitar character I don't want someone else damaging it. Lol so yeah I love it and I can't wait for the ms450 and I will no longer be ordering from guitar center lol
Of course it's a Les Paul. Greatest guitar ever built.
I’m an older instrument! ☠️☠️☠️🤟🏼
Nice Les Paul Robert! The Les Paul is the greatest guitar! I’m so happy to own a Gibson LP Standard.
Did you have a sandwich in that wallet?
Love your vids, but you repeat your own content too much.. how many videos have we seen just based off this Les Paul?? C'mon dude
