    Putting the basic shields in S tier and others that are straight up better below it is why I love your tier lists. Most people wouldn't do it, but it makes perfect sense, in that getting any normal shield is a huge upgrade and after that most of them are not that big of a change.

      He doesn't ever explicitly say what the purpose of the tier list is but I suppose it's to help you decide what items to appreciate the most. I would contend that that's not particularly helpful. I would much rather have a tier list which helped you with the choices that you are presented with in the game. I believe that if he thought about it and said explicitly what good the list is to anyone he would see that himself.
      It seems like you're saying that the tier list should show somehow how big of an upgrade you get when first encounter the item. But that's a) a little less useful to know, and b) obscures which items are even upgrades of what you currently have or not and c) there is very little consensus as to what you're upgrading from. I have to decode his tier lists and reorganize them to make any relevant choices while playing.

    • @pignebula123
      @pignebula123 6 дней назад

      @@MrTkharris a) How so? It's a measure of power taking into consideration the totality of options available to the player up to the first possibility of acquisition. b) This takes into account any and all items you have available to acquire at that time. Effectively ranking them in power/utility versus any and all other available options you might or might not have. c) Completely irrelevant, see b.
      He also takes into account the long-term value of an item (i.e. best in slot) but he seems to weigh that less than the power/utility offered at the time you can acquire the item.
      The whole purpose of the tier list is to compare the value of an item against all other potential items you might have at the time of acquisition to help you determine at that time if you should consider using it (in the case of building for optimal play). You don't need to compare an item individually to all other options, you compare it to the best option and if it's worse you compare it to the next best option until you determine which item it is better than and which item it is worse than. That's how tier lists work. The only difference is that he compares an item only to items that could have been acquired prior to or at the same time as the item being compared.

    The only suggestion I have in terms of editing would be to have a screenshot of the in-game tooltip of the item you are currently talking about, on the right side of the screen where there is a lot of empty space anyway.

    46:25 I think the reason for that is how the effect is coded. It probably says something like "If targetting this character with a ranged attack, target self instead." Since the "self" is always within 5 feet, the game sees it as making a ranged attack in melee and imposes disadvantage on the attack roll.
    Edit: Just tested it out, characters with Crossbow Expert do indeed not get disadvantage on the attack (or at least the game says they do not). So it is very likely coded that way.

    • @Istalrison
      @Istalrison 2 месяца назад +2

      Would actually be pretty easy to find out if it that is true, just equip someone with it, go into turn-based mode, activate Reflective Shell and have someone with Crossbow Expert attack them with a crossbow. If the attack has disadvantage, its something else.

    I think the safeguard shield should be S tier just because early game +1 to saving throws is amazing and it can be gotten as your first shield very easily (sold by dammon in druid grove) and it isnt outclassed ever as no other shield boosts saving throws directly, its also exceptionally good on melee characters that have poor spell saves or MAD characters that cant take high wisdom. Very very good shield to use until the adamantine can be unlocked or even after if you have other shield users/want other adamantine gear.

    • @bred223
      @bred223 2 месяца назад +3

      Because this comment is getting decent traction i wanted to add some reasons this is lowkey my pick for top 3 shields regardless of being gotten in early act 1. +1 to every saving throw is simply insane, ring/cloak of protection are considered the best ring and cloak not just because of the ac but because of the saving throw too and this is effectively just those with one more ac. It synergizes massively with shield master feat negating dmg on successful dex saves. Most other shield benefits can be gotten from other equipment but better whereas a +1 to all saving throws is basically a ring/cloak of protection exclusive. There is not a single build in this game that doesnt get good benefit from +1 saving throws where every other shield works best in a single build (ketherics is just meh on a non-spellcaster, adamantine works best with heavy armour/high dex, etc) making this the most versatile. I just cannot stop gushing about this thing, the only bad thing about it is that it doesnt fit any one build the best as most builds benefit more from one specific shield. Uncommon rarity and being sold in act 1 are the only reason i think this doesnt get talked about more, lowkey op til you get the more build specific shields.

      I went back and forth between S and A tier for the safeguard - it's obviously a totally free early upgrade, so you'll wear it 100% of the time, which makes it S tier according to my ranking criteria, but I also wanted to differentiate between the adamantine shield and the other act 1 shields in terms of sheer power level, so in the end I went with A

    Swires Sledboard can be abused with Skinburster. You swing the polearm twice then you switch it to the Sledboard, that way you can keep your force conuit on 4 stacks. Adding in resistances, magical plate and heavy armor master can result in a pretty formidable damage reduction of 10, all that WITHOUT being an abjuration wizard. You may not end up being 100% untouchable, but simply recasting AoA is perfectly fine.

    The Shield of Scorching reprisal is pretty fun addition for a radiant orb/cleric spirit guardian runner.
    I like adding it with the Hat of Fire Acuity. If I am using the luminous armor, I am already max stacking radiant orbs with grouped up enemies, so the extra spell attack roll and damage on opportunity attacks is nice replacement to the holy lance helm. So, run around stacking radiant orb, opportunity attacks deal fire damage and stack fire acuity.
    Then cast Fireball or scorching ray. Rinse and repeat. Cleans up mobs VERY nicely with a nice combination of damages.
    It compliments my Fear Sword bard who's applying frighten & reverberation on mass.

    If I have one planning and design critique of Larian if is that they made some very cool items that are irrelevant by the time you get them. That and all rhe hidden items they didn't make active. It really limits itemization, especially in weapons. The dearth of good weapons except for swords is disheartening. Dwarves get to use battle axes and Warhammer, cool. A random guess for why Viconia's reflective shell makes the attack rolls going back have disadvantage:
    Maybe since most attack rolls are ranged attack rolls, and if someone targets themselves, they are in melee with themselves (by default - at least my guess in how it's been coded), so the attack roll has disadvantage?

    I am going to actually push back a bit on Sentinel Shield.
    The +3 initiative is definitely very good, but it doesn't eliminate surprised which is actually very important. Sure it gives advantage on the perception to avoid being surprised, but there are a number of encounters where that doesn't help and you will be surprised no matter what. Also Alert feat and Alert elixirs do completely eclipse this shield and I think it's easy enough to work those into builds.
    It's still very good for a short time but I would actually put it in A.
    Also, I wonder if a consideration should be made for the Adamantine shield because it is only accessible if you beat an extremely difficult and completely optional boss encounter.

    The fact that it uses Spell Save DC, and the woad’s ensnaring strike is a bonus action (perfect for if you don’t snare on your attack) just makes it such a perfect combo.

    it might be useful (if not camp casting warding bond) on a cleric maintaining warding bonds on the party to stack a lot of damage reduction such as:
    absolute's protector
    defender flail
    helldusk armor
    heavy armor mastery feat

    I usually skip on the Adamantine shield and take both versions of the Adamantine armour. But thinking about it, I probably should stop doing that. I can't believe you put a mundane shield in S tier, and then shields that can be obtained very early that are better in a lower tier. I sort of understand your logic, but it looks insane to see tiered this way. I can't see this being higher than B tier. Essentially you are saying having any shield (other than broken) is great to have, but a mundane shield is quickly made obsolete due to the presence of magical shields. Again, a really whacky decision to tier it this way. I otherwise feel that you have a lot of really solid logic in this list.

    • @marceror

      @@Cephalopocalypse I did listen to your full explanation. And as I stated, I "sort of" understand your logic -- essentially you are saying that the benefit of a shield is so great that it becomes S tier to have one compared to not. But where I disagree is this is now what the bar is for S, and a shield you get shortly after that has +2 AC AND a boost to saves being only A tier creates an inconsistency. A better shield is rated worse than an inferior shield. I think the issue is you are trying to use your tier list to do 2 things at the same time. One is a traditional rating of all shields. The second is to show the value of a shield overall -- which probably isn't something requires a tier list, and this is what results in the inconsistency.

    Having a basic shield as "S" tier is very misleading to a new player looking up a list and the reasons for its ranking is not exclusive to itself at all. Like the reasoning that its early AC to get easy is well the same reason why you want ANY shield and at that early in the game, like pre druids Grove, its not like you have any other options really. By your own logic Safeguard should be S since its also available super early and a direct improvement to a normal shield. If the basic shield wasnt in the game I would expect the Broken Shield to be S tier instead which as you show is very far from that. If shield compared to other shields should just be about C if that as every other shield that you can get your hands on does what it does but better or have something extra that it doesnt.

But the amount of casual people who type "tier list xxxxx. Bg3" is definitely not 0 and being more objective with a list would be helpful and just mention during that ranking that with its availability or non availability it would rank much higher but objectively it's the basic standard gear or this item only comes from the last boss so you only have it for 5 seconds kinda deal.
