Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD): An ICD is a device similar to a pacemaker but with additional capabilities. It is used to treat potentially life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities, such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. These conditions can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. The ICD continuously monitors the heart's rhythm and, if it detects a dangerous abnormality, delivers an electrical shock (defibrillation) to restore a normal heartbeat. In addition to defibrillation, the ICD can also function as a pacemaker if needed.
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT): CRT is a specialized treatment for individuals with heart failure and electrical conduction abnormalities, particularly those with a condition called left bundle branch block (LBBB). It involves the implantation of a CRT device, which is similar to a pacemaker but with additional leads. The device sends electrical signals to both the left and right ventricles of the heart, synchronizing their contractions and improving overall heart function. CRT can help improve symptoms, such as fatigue and shortness of breath, and increase exercise tolerance in eligible patients.

It depends on diagnosis and indication of CRT_D. Procedure dosesnt causes death usually but risk of disease means Heart failure and stage of heart disease define the prognosis.

Hi my father is 75, he had angioplasty twice, now only 15% of his heart is working. He has little kidney problem, diabetes and thyroid. Can we still put CRTD or AICD? Please advise if there is a chance of success. Thank you Doctor.

Yes procedure(ICD, CRT) can be done but I will recommand a good medical management , diet and lifestyle modification over any device implant seeing his age and other comorbidity. But final opinion need patient detailed evaluation before any advice.

Pacemaker is meant for increasing heart rate when it is reduced persistently or intermittently without any reversiable cause, while CRT-P is for improving the heart pumping in addition to heart rate management function.
