  • The full tv version theme of Thames TV's Magpie.
The theme tune was played by the Spencer Davis Group. The 7inch version featured the same group but they changed their name to The Murgatroyd Band. The track was composed by Eddie Hardin who also sang lead vocals.

Yes, Spencer Davis Group, but post Steve Winwood. Sung by the great Eddie Hardin, who's also playing the hammond organ.

Hearing it now it's quite obvious the Murgatroyd Band were the SDG in disguise - except for the Winwood vocal it has their sound all over it. I'm old enough to remember Jenny Hanley's predecessor - Susan Stranks!

Thanks for posting this! I used to return home from school and watch Magpie on tv. I loved this song and the opening titles sequence! This piece of music in my childhood must have been one of the reasons why I became a fan of rock music in later years.

For years, as a kid, I thought the vocals were sung by Steve Winwood. Eddie Hardin's singing voice was not entirely dissimilar to SW's, in this case. Anyway, it sounds great.

CLASSIC. The real, full studio version. Great memories. If you lived in London or Essex you watched Magpie, leaving Blue Peter for the rest of England to be patronised

I think it was nationally syndicated. Most Thames shows, with obvious exceptions, were.
