  • First time overview taking the Outer Island out on the water. It paddled and handled beautifully, rolled well, edged well, and reminded me I need to work on core strength. So far certainly turning out to be an awesome used find.
Up next is Dan from Headwaters on his Sitka - which looks badass by the way.

Man you make me want to go play with my Greenland Paddle. That kayak looks so sweet! I’ll be getting mine out for a shake down day paddle this week. Look forward to sharing my thought.

Nice! Same, I want to hear how that rudder responds. 👌👍

I found this channel because of Dan and Headwaters. I really enjoyed this overview and I'm excited for the rest of this challenge with you Dan. Awesome stuff.

You nailed it on the review of this Outer Island design. I paddle Babina's version in strip plank and it performs just as you said. A week long trip in this boat is doable as long as you pack right. Thanks for posting a review. Derrick, Newfoundland

Moving forward or aft will change the handling characteristics of the kayak.
It will also change the speed of the kayak relative to the paddlers effort.
I've found staying a little aft gives me a laster hull with less effort and less weather-cocking in a quartering sea

My salvage/restore find this season is also an Impex, Formula, so it doesn't fit with what you asked. Rather, I'll mention my 15 Easkey Venture LV, last seasons find...like literally sunken in the river. Looked like it took a prop strike or something nasty during a storm event. Anyway, replaced the rudder and lines, back band and ratchets, fixed the hull damage ( right at the stern under the rudder pin) and it is now definitely my fastest yak, likes an edge, and looks sassy!

New subscriber here from the crossover to Dan's channel. Looking forward to more great videos. Glad that the boat handles so well. I imagine once you get the fit dialed in it's going to be a fantastic craft for you.

Ditch the backband if you can. Train your core to sit up with a positive pelvic angle (sacral support foam block "rollers ramp") and you'll get your shoulders over the work, and enjoy it more I think. Sweet find in the OI!

I paddled an Impex OI for years as part of my fleet. Mine was a keyhole cockpit. Are you sure yours has an ocean, rather than a keyhole cockpit? I can't see a top shot of your boat in this video to ascertain.

Im looking for any recommendations on a kayak to use to complete the full Delaware river, I have a cheap box store 10 footer that I use for short trips on the river, but I'm ready to upgrade. I also live on the south shore of long island, and would like to eventually do some sea kayaking, and one day cross the long island sound to Connecticut. Any recommendations would be very helpful
