I would love to go out and shoot more, but daily life kicks hard :) I recently ditched my Fuji XT30 for a Ricoh GRIIIx as my B-Cam/Dadcam and it's kind of challenging to use this lillte beast - but in a good way. I would love to here more about your approach of combining daily life with job and photography. Keep it up!

I think 28mm is the most versatile and strong focal length. You can get close and create a feeling of intimacy as if you are there in the scene. Or you can step back and photograph establishing shots and landscapes. Sure the 35mm can do it similarly but it feels less intimate like you are observing from far away.

Amazing video with perfect balance of information and examples! More like this please!! I currently have a fixed 28mm 1.7 lens as well as a 35mm 1.4, but looking to add 24-70mm 2.8 and an 85mm 1.4, but as you mentioned the 85mm has limited use cases so not sure if I can justify it😊
Isn’t the point getting nice shoots? If you use 85 for street and can accomplish the same as someone on 35 without being a pain in the ass for other people I’m all for it .

C'est ma focale préférée mais je n'en ai pas trouvé de réellement compacte pour le Sony (ce qui pour moi est tout l'intérêt d'un 28mm principalement utilisé pour la photographie de rue/documentaire) J'ai une autre question pour toi : je ne possède pas le Sony A7CII mais je considère fortement ce boitier. J'ai utilisé par le passé 3 marques à savoir Leica, Fujifilm et Ricoh. Ce qui m'a toujours empêché de sauter le pas pour Sony c'est de lire partout la même chose "Sony est ennuyeux"... "Sony est un outil de travail mais n'apporte aucun plaisir" ... "Les couleurs Sony ne sont pas terribles" etc. etc. Si je comprends le fait qu'un appareil peut inspirer à faire de la photo plus qu'un autre, je me demande si ces mots sur Sony ne sont pas simplement exagérés, et j'aimerais bien avoir la perspective de quelqu'un dont je trouve le travail magnifique (et qui utilise Sony :p) Merci pour ton retour et bonne journée :)
I have been always struggling among 28-35-50mm prime. I would say two lens 28/50 are fine. One lens is 35mm. It also depends on what you are photographing… For example when I’m with my friends I prefer the 28mm with wich can tell more about the environment. With my family 28 and 50 for some portrait of my daughter are fine. For street I prefer 35mm that allow you to keep a certain distance from your subject.
I just got a nikon zf with a kit 40mm. Excited to get back into it. it has been years and shot with 35mm. And I know 40mm isn't too different but excited to better composing shots.
43mm for me for 90% of shots and nice cropping with high MP sensor. Also have a 28mm Ricoh GR3 with me at all times for the occasions where I need something wider.
Thanks for bringing up this topic. Aside from wide-ultra wide (85mm), how much of the focal length characteristics matter versus our own shooting style? I find I can get similar looks with my 28mm, 35mm, 40mm and 50mm the way I ‘view’ the scenes. Some of the examples you used for your 28, 35 and some of the 50mm has similar look or style and unless you states the focal length I doubt one would know which comes from which focal length.
I tend to gravitate towards 24mm & 50mm focal lengths. When I shoot with a zoom lens, I find that I tend to end up on those focal lengths naturally. Its got me thinking that I’d be better off just getting a 24mm & 50mm prime lens instead
Been usesing my minolta rokkor 50mm 1.4 the last 2-3 Years funny thing 🤔it's the oldest lens I've got and now It's my most used one. So 50mm is apparently my go to, probly because it's the most fun to compose a shot. At least for me.
APSC 23mm + 56mm f1.4 primes, and the small Sigma 18-50mm zoom. I started with the zoom and thought my natural progression would be to go to primes, but I found that I picked up the zoom more and more again. It's under 300g for an equivalent 27-76mm f4 lens, the versatility is insane. I felt with f2.8 I have enough background separation when being close to people or objects, and most often I don't even use the highest aperture. Still, having primes is nice for when you want that extra special look. But I found the 35mm equivalent can be quite boring and normal in open landscapes, while the 85mm is a lot better but still less flexible than the zoom which can do both looks
I am interested in getting a camera and your photography has inspired me greatly. If you had to choose one, would you go with the Ricoh GR III or Ricoh GR IIIx? I have tried the x100v and borrow it from time to time from my brother, love the way it looks just captures enough of what I want without it feeling like there is so much blank space. I've seen that 28mm is pretty much the same as what you would get on a smart phone so it seems like maybe the IIIx would be better for me? I enjoy taking pictures to document trips but enjoy looking for interesting ways of framing it. Since I can borrow the x100v from my brother, is it bad to have both a 35mm along with a 40mm or should I get the 28mm to compliment it.
Thank you for your videos! I am newbie and got a little bit confused when you were talking about full frame and crop sensor, so if I use crop sensor does it mean "focal length for life" is 35 mm which is 23 mm on crop sensor, or 35 mm which going to be 52 mm?
Glad you liked the video. I am always referring to Full Frame equivalents. So my focal length for life is 35mm Full Frame. If you want that on a crop sensor it would be 23mm.
Sometimes I just take a 35 prime and resign myself to cropping in post if I want a tighter shot. I think I could make a 35/85mm f1.8 pair work for 80% of what I do.
I used to always use the 35 but after getting the 24-70 gm ii it has never left my camera. That thing is so good it's like having a prime at every focal length. The Sony cameras are also really good at low light so I don't really miss the f/1.4. The only downside is the size and weight.
I have been playing with the idea of getting the a7CR and a 28 Elmarit, just to have access to the wide at 40mp and the tighter 40 at aps-c crop. I lose autofocus of course, but I don't think Sony has a pancake 28f2.8, and I'm accustomed to zone focusing the Ricoh anyway. Maybe I should be less ridiculous, spend less money and just get the GRIIIx to compliment the III, and then tele converter for a 60mm just in case. 🧐 I don't think they have any IIIx cameras in Japan currently though. I went to the Daido Moriyama GR space in Shibuya last week and they had cameras to try but none to buy. It's already sounding like too much work gear hunting. I will just stick with the III. 👋 😂
there is a Sony 28mm f2, pretty old but I think it is not bad. We always spend too much time thinking about gear (that we eventually never get) instead of taking photos ^^'
i agree about the 35mm, i have zeiss its really nice to take my familly picture while we are traveling, but i have to disagree with wide lens, i love my 11mm because i more of a an artist who love to make wild composisiton on my image

50mm is fun, I love it too. This Rokkor 50mm seems like a cool lens :)

My favourite set up is 23mm prime and 55-200 zoom (apsc)

One thing I’m conscious about is the size. I don’t think you use the lens hoods - do you not like them?
