For those who think these were non-handicapped games between Ma Long and Liu Shiwen back in 2021, and wondered why the match was so close, you may have misunderstood what was actually going on. These were in fact warm-up matches between the Chinese men and the Chinese women team at the 2021 Olympics, designed to simulate the competitive settings where one might face a formidable opponent at some critical junctures in a match . What you are watching here was one of those warm-up matches. In the match, each game started with the score of 6-8, in favor of the female player. In other words, Liu Shiwen didn't have to win the first eight points in each game, leaving her to only need 3 more points (to 11) for the win (assuming that Ma Long couldn't catch up and even the score at 10-10 first). Although it may appear as if it was only a two-points advantage (the difference between 8 and 6), in reality the advantage for Liu Shiwen was much, much larger (anyone who truly understands table tennis and/or plays the sport at the competive level will be able to attest to this). In such a situation, Liu was in the position of someone who found herself up in points near the finish line, albeit against a much better opponent, and her goal was to find the strength and the focus to push through for the wins.

I was a little boy when the Chinese table tennis team came to the US in the 1970s. I was fortunate enough to get to meet some of the players and instantly fell in love with the sport. Today, I’m a big fan of Ma Long, but I really enjoyed watching Liu Shiwen play him. I particularly liked Liu’s tactics and style of play. Great job by both of them!!

Many of the players are practically unknown outside China since they only participate in the local leagues, which are definitely the best and toughest in the world, and have no chance of competing internationally. Their standard is so high that if the rules were to allow unlimited number of players from one country to participate, the reserves from China will most probably beat the teams / players from most other countries participating in the Olympics and China will make a clean sweep of all the medals for single and double.

China certainly dominates the highest level of competitive table tennis either way

Liu Shiwen' has this short burst, attacking close to the table playing style and it is very difficult to defend against that... Naturally, it took a while for Ma Long to adjust to this ... For example he doesn't play powerful FH topspin from the left corner but pushes the ball to the straight. Is it just for game with women or new chinese game philosophy?

The 2 guys that lost carried them to 7 games so it was not even a run away for the women even with the advantage they had, in a real game there is room for error where u can recover but in this handicap game the men had no room for error dats why they won those 2 sets

So this was just some entertainment to watch very good table tennis and squabble among ourselves who is better man or woman, lolllllll leave it up to the chinese to come up with something like this and have world wondering, but the answer is already there just look for it the clue HANDICAP
