When you buy a house, there are lots of expenses. Mortgage, property tax (3- 6k/yr), property insurance(1-2k/yr), condo fees if it's a condo, + maintenance especially if it's a old house (furnace, A/c, water heater, etc need to be changed every 12-15 years).
Stress test for getting the mortgage is another hassle. You're mortally engaged if you take a mortgage. Best is to rent a small place in city, until the recession happens. For example 2002/3 & 2008/9 was the best time to buy a house in Toronto. A 7 year cycle it usually follows, with an exception of 2015/16. Wait for the next recession to buy, most probably in 2022/23.
