Devil May Cry 4 - Designing a Great Boss Fight

  • A very quick look at one of the best rival fights in the Devil May Cry series. Credo's design kicks loads of arse and deserves more praise.
    Even just looking at it from Nero's perspective this video won't cover everything. Some little notes I either couldn't fit into the video or forgot while writing the script:
    That third telegraph on the spear also has tighter timing compared to the second one, the startup is much sooner after the second one is thrown.
    Shield breaking isn't consistently at the same amount of health, nor necessarily tied to his new moveset, but with however many times I did this fight for the video it came pretty damn close almost every time.
    Sound design if you throw the spear back is so good, love that crunch.
    The shuffle move is so great if you're trying to land parries, gets you distance from one attack while setting you up to clash with another.
    Hitboxes on this fight are super good. With the way certain attacks change Dante/Nero's positions you can "low profile" him, check 6:50.
    Thanks to / hyperbithero and / thegamingbritshow for two little clips I used in the beginning, but mostly / cerberusx10 for the awesome Dante v Credo footage. Man kicks ass at DMC4, check him out.
    Recommended: • DMC4 Battle with Credo - this is the most insane thing I've ever seen someone do in this fight from Dante's perspective. I mostly focused on Credo's moveset in this video but if you want proof of just how much you can do with Dante, this is that video.

    Devil May Cry's boss fights function on the rule of inverse proportions. The smaller the boss, the harder the fight.

      Yes, and they're better because they require more speed and attention to telegraphs due to them being smaller and having attacks that match their size, but that's ultimately feasible due to your Player Character and the Boss both being humanoids with rather similar abilities and stats.

    I appreciate that you actually understand how dmc works.
    It's no wonder it doesn't do well with game critics, I've read several reviews in which they complain about devil hunter being too hard for them to finish.
    I think devil may cry's weakpoint is in how it fails to teach the player that the goal of the game is really to do thrilling combo's, not to beat it.
    That and at no point in the game does it tell you how to use nero's exceed or that enemy step can cancel moves and replenish jumps/trickster moves (which is fundamental in executing combo's beyond aerial rave and the like).

    • @dantesapprentice4581
      @dantesapprentice4581 7 лет назад +53

      Brings up the problem of choice really nicely. DMC has never been so much about "beating a foe" as it is about "how stylishly you beat a foe" bringing up the question of move choices. I never really got good at jump cancelling, although I can stay in the air pretty long as Nero, but I still had loads of fun with the series. Beating Dante's missions on DMD was insane.

      "I think devil may cry's weakpoint is in how it fails to teach the player that the goal of the game is really to do thrilling combo's, not to beat it."
      You absolutely nailed it. I wonder how many players consider just shooting from afar "optimal".

      My brother doesn't understand why I keep playing DMC4SE because of this. He's the kind of guy who does the main story then moves onto another game. Meanwhile, I'm standing here trying to come up with the most satisfying combos and being a stylish badass.

    • @theskepticpirate156
      @theskepticpirate156 7 лет назад +10

      Also, as for shooting from afar being "optimal", I hope you haven't seen DSP.

    • @richardsinclair7661

      Devil Hunter is REALLY easy. On my last playthrough, I was one mission away from completing the game on Dante Must Die. I didn't bother with Heaven or Hell or Hell or Hell cuz I'm not THAT much of a masochist.
      And eh. I agree and disagree. I think the purpose of the game kinda depends on who you are as a player. For me, rather than pick one or the other, I like to do stylish combos WHILE beating the game.
      Also, it does teach you how to use Exceed in the Divinity Statue screen. Left bumper/trigger, chargeable up to three times. It also mentions with a perfect input, you can charge the whole thing in one go. Now, the finer mechanics and reflexes of it are for the player to find out, such as the cancelling.

      @ohamatchhams 8 лет назад +74

      Right about back then in 2008, I always thought Nero as a concept in character was nicely designed to be that one agile kid that supposed to be cool, cocky and emotional at the same time while able to have it's own place as a character below Dante, while somehow striving to get acceptance to Dante as a bud towards the end (like a junior to a senior)
      The only thing that actually baffles me is the origin story that made him less fleshed out and being more "obscure" in the game world, hence hardly acknowledged by the players compared to Dante which has more clear origins and development

    • @CylomDashti
      @CylomDashti 8 лет назад +9

      Well, he is pretty slow and you aren't given much for you to start doing mad combos. I wouldn't mind him if we got to play dante a bit earlier or if dmc4 was a complete game and dante received areas and bosses designed around him. Instead the game felt like "Nero: the game ft. Dante" when imo it should've been the opposite but that's just my opinion.

      @GeneralWagner 7 лет назад +12

      dante is cliche, never get close to any woman like all protagonists, he is always boring with everything, always like a "bad boy" like all cliche protagonists, but is loved by players because people loves who is "mad" but he do nothing more, many times dante seems to be superficial or a robot, not cold, but lifeless, and he most of times don't give a fuck to anything that is actually important and are parts from the story, few times he act like a lifeform, dante is very strange as a character.
      nero was different, they was badass and alive at same time, he think, he feel, he use the enemies to clean the floor, he give the little finger, he dont' give a fuck to shit but care about important things, he is a deep character, some protagonists are like this, but are few compared with the total of virgin protagonists that is like dante.
      people loves dante because he try to sell that image of alpha, but sometimes he act like a gay or a scared child when he face any situation that is not battle, he became more deep in dmc4, but still superficial compared to nero.

    I think you nailed the head on why boss fights in DmC reboot aren't as good as DMC3's or 4's. They do not test your maneuverability, or the reflexes, like bosses/mini-bosses in other games.

    It's the same reason why PvP and the PvP-style bosses are so thrilling in Dark Souls. Yeah, that series has a bunch of colossal enemies that are super impressive, but the mechanics that you have as a player are so precise and deep given their simplicity - now what would happen if those were used against the player? Like you say, you don't need a huge arena to make that compelling - the mechanics of the fights are impressive enough on their own. I remember basically nothing about DmC4 to be honest but this boss fight feels a little like that scenario - two guys, same size, similar speed of movement, just slashing the living fuck out of each other. Made me want to revisit that game. Thanks for the great video as always dude!

    • @brightsuperstition
      @brightsuperstition 8 лет назад +11

      You don't remember them because, aside from Credo, all the bosses in DMC4 are utter shit. Agnus, Savior, Berial, Sanctus, Bael and Echidna are all garbage in terms of mechanics. They may look visually memorable (like the arena of the Bael boss fight or the epic showdown with Berial at the start of the game), but mechanics wise they are trash. The good bosses in the DMC series are in DMC1 and DMC3, though the latter does have its share of shit bosses like Gigapede and Leviathan..

      +Savon Moreland When aren't we commending DMC1 for its boss fights. It invented this style of game and still has some of the finest bosses in all of gaming. Nightmare, Phantom and Nelo Angelo 3 are legit more interesting than anything in DMC4 besides Credo, especially when taking into account of different the gameplay and sense of speed and movement in those games.

    • @simonge3042
      @simonge3042 7 лет назад +13

      +brightsuperstition Nah. Dante in dmc4 is a great boss if encountered at dmd+ difficulty. Also, enemies like blitz and alto angelo are pretty interesting too. True that it's generally agreed dmc4 isn't as difficult as its predecessor , it's still much more challenging than DmC and many other games out there. It's certainly not shit.

      Bleachlover01 the problem with 2 was they took away Dante's personality, the combat in it needed work definitely but was serviceable, that little kick off the wall and falling straight down guns blazing never got old. It's good they learned from it though, dmc3 and 4 were amazing.

  • @Anzatnt

    Superb video, I dig it.
    By the way, more often than not the solution to Devil May Cry's challenges is simplicity itself. Sure, if you got the reflexes, you can just jump away or block it or counter it or whatever, but the easiest solution is the easiest to perform. For example, rolling through credo's summoned blades is super tight, but just double jumping sideways resolves it.
    Attacking Bael in midair is better. Simple as that.
    Other titles, especially DMC3, have similar solutions you wouldn't think of right away. For example the hell vanguard (the death reaper miniboss)'s teleporting attack that comes from below is a bit tight to dodge at first, and sure, you can dodge it. But it will never hit you if you simply walk away from him. No circle on the ground? just jump, it'll be coming sideways.
    Gigapede's a pain, but his purple orbs can be deflected back and it usually kills him fast.
    Jester has annoying orb attacks, but they can be blocked with RoyalGuard easily.
    Agni and Rudra are frustrating, but if you fight between them, they'll do most of the damage themselves and stunlock each other.
    Beowulf's cages can easily be pushed back at him for massive damage.
    Lady is extremely weak to quicksilver, just with Beowulf's basic attacks you can skip phase two, which is what you want, even on Dante Must Die.
    Vergil can block bullets and melee attacks, sure. After you get him and do some combos he'll step back a bit and if you keep attacking, you'll be punished. However if you shoot him as he steps back, he won't react. If you have Gunslinger + shotgun this really hurts him (plus it looks cool). Or you can shoot a few rockets.
    Gideon....Gideon can eat garbage for all I care I hate him.

      Vergil is a different story in DmC Definitive Edition. He was rebalanced to be much harder, and on Gods Must Die is one of the most difficult boss fights in the series.

    • @MariusUrucu
      @MariusUrucu 8 лет назад +33

      +Potidaon Did they remove the obnoxious cut-scenes during the boss fight? No? Well, that's a letdown. All I see is that they made Vergil's health bar higher. Doesn't really add much to the boss fight. Also watched some footage on Gods Must Die. It really isn't all that difficulty, honestly.
      Hey, the Definitive Edition is an improvement over the original game, I'll give you that. Too bad I won't experience it, because Ninja Theory had the bright (as in boneheaded) idea to NOT port this game to the PC, despite the fact that the vanilla version was already on PC. Hell, even an update would've been nice, since 60 FPS isn't an issue on the PC Version. And I'm not willing to buy a PS4 or Xbox One (at least not yet...) for a game that disappointed me, to disappoint me less...

    On my most recent playthrough of DMC4, I was fighting Credo and we were both down to a sliver of health. I was in the air, with my feet at about head height, and he was on the ground just in front of me. He had a spear charged up, and so I thought, "Well, that sucker's going to hit me. Better luck next time... might as well swing for the fences, though." I went for the Buster grab on the spear, partially as a joke, and I nailed it. Point blank caught the damn thing and shoved it right into his face, and holy hell, was that a rush.

    Credo is one of my favorite boss fights ever, and the reason is because of its pacing and how it seems engineered to create Flow. Like you mention, his telegraphs and attack pacing are brilliant, there's always juuuuuuuust enough time for you to realize Credo is saying "MY TURN!" before he counters, and the whole feeling of the fight is "Two (roughly) equally skilled combatants throwing down."

  • @lx-icon

    Honestly, I hate how everyone seems to hate DMC, but you make great points in the gameplay for combat not being the same. They had great ideas here and there in it, and the story isn't as horrible as most people make it since it was meant to be before he got a hang of his powers, but it still had a lot of great points.
    But, still, I do like how you broke the boss fight down. Really illuminating on all the aspects of what makes great Devil May Cry boss fights.

    DMC4 is such a fantastic example of the absolute best of hack'n slash combat, gameplay-wise it's the best in the series. I hope the leeches in control of Capcom can restrain themselves from fucking up and let the developers do their job for the next DMC game. With enough room to breath, stretch their legs and expand on already amazing mechanics the series has yet to reach its pinnacle.

    Credo was a really underrated character. He had personality and good character. I always loved the way they thought they were Angels but they turned into these insane demons it was very ironic. The fight with Vergil in DMC3 is literally one of the best boss fights in game history. It's the same as this Credo one but on a better level. This is why I enjoy the DMC series over the Bayonetta or God of War series. Because they don't have these boss fights or combat so well established. Really good video honestly.

    Credo was simply amazing. His design and his patterns. He was a big challenge for me, especially when i took most of his HP down, after that he was at the same level as Vergil in his 3rd fight, way too fast for me to react. This fight literally took all Vergil fights from DMC 3 and fused them into one. Credo is fast and powerful and as the fight goes he becomes even better just to make a bigger challenge.
