  • The California sea lion is a costal seal native to western Northern America. Mature males are larger than females and have a prominent bumpy bone on the forehead called the sagittal crest. The crest is topped by a light color tuft of hair.
Sea lions are social animals that gather during breeding season on sandy beaches.
Sea lions are polygynous and bulls maintain a harem of 5 to 30 cows for the breeding season. Female seals congregate in groups called rookeries with a single male overseeing the group.
La Jolla Cove, San Diego, CA is the best place to see Sea lions in their natural habitat. They breed from late June to August. We have visited this beach in March 2023 and again in December 2023 and spotted many seal pups on the beach.
