  • Sony a99 review - a serious bit of kit, for serious snappers, but is it seriously impressive? Because like it's little brother the a77, it has to be
    Is Sony's latest and greatest SLT (don't cal it a DSLR, because technically it's not, no matter how much it looks exactly like one ;) ) up to the task of kicking a few "canikon" teeth in? Lets find out what the Sony Alpha SLT-A99 can do
    The Sony Alpha 99 (model variants SLT-A99V with GPS, SLT-A99 without GPS depending on country)
    You can find an album of the test shots in this video, and more, here;
    plus.google.co...
    You can find my previous review of the SLT-A77 here; • "BLOODY HELL" - Sony a...
    Basic blurb;
    24.3 megapixel Exmor Full Frame 35mm CMOS
    Phase-detection AF system
    Adjustable 3.0 inch Xtra Fine LCD Screen (1,228,800 dots)
    2.4M dot OLED viewfinder
    Up to 10 frames per second @ full 24MP
    Full 1080p HD movie recording 25p & 50p (or 60p depending on country)
    ISO Sensitivity Setting: 100 - 25600 equivalent
    Shutter Speed Range (seconds): 1/8000 - 30 and bulb
    "The Sony SLT-A99 DSLR Camera. Take your photography to the next level with this α99 DSLR camera. Featuring Sony's groundbreaking Translucent Mirror Technology, you can focus and shoot simultaneously for fast, precise performance and continuous shooting of up to 12 frames per second, complete with continuous auto focus. View setting adjustments in real time with a Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder, and choose from three HD movie modes-super-smooth 50p, standard 50i or richly cinematic 25p-to optimize the look and feel of your videos (records in 29-minute segments)."
    And if you're curious about that Band who were performing on the street (clearly just so I could test the low light capabilities in artificial lighting and teh mics on a noisy street) they're called Pludo - and they kinda ROCKED... pludo.com.au/

    After watching your Video on the a99 I bit the bullet and picked it up today and love the camera and a great upgrade over my Sony a58. I am so happy with this camera and your camera helped me decide on the a99.

    So what? The mini-disk was "superior" to other competing tech too... doesn't mean it's what customers WANTED, or that it was the BEST CHOICE, or the MOST USEFUL.
    STANDARDS are better, more choice, better choices, easier to use in the real world, more flexiable, COLOSSALLY more options to not only gear attachment, but accessory attachment.
    The Minolta shoe was a MASSIVE pain in the ass in every single respect. Get over it,

    I really appreciate to see such a well spoken person such as yourself rate this camera. I'm been shooting with Sony since 2007. Started with alpha 200, sold it to 350, sold it to 77. Along with that I bought the alpha 900 then bought a third, the alpha 850. All along I've been sort of defending the brand versus others when ever I ran into other photographers. I sold my 850 and waiting to purchase the a99 before my next wedding.

    Sont ARE a major player in the camera business dude. And they don't do DSLR's anymore, SLT, Mirrorless and compact.
    DLSR is slowly fading out as modern technology takes over.

    Yeah, the partnership of Sony's Exmor sensor, the "BIONIZ" processor and a full frame aesthetic through Zeiss glass is a pretty damn killer combo-move.

    Another great review. Something nobody mentions in Sony SLT reviews, is the fact that when you're shooting with flash, the EVF whacks up the gain so you can actually see what you're about to shoot. You can't do THAT with an optical finder...... Sony 1 - The rest 0

    I agree better bang for your buck with a77. Sensor shift rules, I think ppl tend to underestimate this factor when comparing Sony to other brands. No need to buy lens with vibration reduction, body does it all. Keep up the good work with your reviews. I really enjoy them!

    Hi! Awesome review of the A77 & A99! I have 6 trips next year, 3 for leisure, 3 for work. All my holidays will be to the snow in New Zealand, Tokyo & Canada. I then have 3 work trips, all in cities (NY, Vegas, LA, San Fran, HK, London, Paris, Guangzhou). Which camera would you choose out of the A77/A99? Considering the night city shots and the blatant over-exposure that comes with any snowy environment... If you can help it would be truly appreciated!! Otherwise, keep up with the reviews!!

    Wow Blunty I really enjoyed your review. Much better than any professional review from CNET or something like it. I currently use a 5D III but find this camera very intriguing for that EVF. Just out of curiosity though how many stops do you lose with the translucent mirror in your estimation? Also are you mainly a video guy? Lastly is this cameras sensor identical to the Nikon D600? Thanks

    Nice review and though a bit quick on the speech I understood most of it. I have the A900 with the ZA 135 and I WAS tempted to buy the A99. However, I decided it doesn't offer enough that’s distinctively different from what I can do now.
    I’m not really into the video aspect so I’ll be looking more closely at the RX1. At least its clearly a different tool with full-frame and that will be something that is more useful for traveling.

    It's surprising how good the video footage from that camera looks, even in today's standards. The pictures are gorgeous too, but that's more because of you than the camera tbh. You're probably the only camera reviewer on this damn website that can actually shoot good pictures.But that camera was truly ahead of its time. Still though, kinda sucks that it's been 4 fucking years since it came out, and the price hasn't even gone down one bit. Which is kind of bullshit if you ask me, since the first a7 can be had for around $600-800.

  • @glypo
    @glypo 12 лет назад

    I agree with the closing comments about the value of the A77. The A99 seems like a slightly missed opportunity, a great video camera but just missing out being a potentially great action/sports shooter. SLT with a FF - I was hoping for something in the region of 12-14 FPS with killer AF.
    The AF coverage seems narrow and the frame rate a little slow. Nothing the 5D3 cannot give give me, but Canon have a much greater sport lens choice. My fingers are crossed for the next Sony FF.

    Until I saw standard hotshoe, I wasn't really paying attention. Now I want. Such a simple thing because a company listened has generated a future sale. Love the screen. Great for tripod use. The image stabilisation works and the monochrome mode is, well, awesome.
    I now must buy this camera. A 'stepped' zoom lock would make it perfect.

    About the in camera stabilizer with video: I have the A77, and with high ISO (1600 is the max in video, I might add...) it's unusable. Noisy and shaky. And the reason: in video mode, it's _electronic_, because it would overheat if it were moving the sensor around. And because it's electronic, it's cropping the image. With 18mm sensor you get ~24mm wide frame...
    Have you noticed any of these with the A99?

    I am from Germany, but living in america right now. I saw that the "german" version offers 50p nad 60p. How is it about the US version. online store talks only about 60p, but the manual says both again. Do you know?

    I didn't buy a 5D3 because no 1080 50/60p and left the store with a NEX-5N a couple of weeks ago waiting for all Sony's new toy to make it to market. I just don't know what to buy being I've budgeted for a 5D3 and primarily want to supplement the footage from a Sony EX1R. I want something compact, compared to the EX1R, which I carry without really having to think about it. Video is my focus, I have little need for stills and if as mention in a previous post this unit doesn't overheat like the 5

    That's the problem... I've seen both your reviews (loved them) and others...
    I really like both, dying to get a full frame and BIG fan for Sony (plus lets me use the 20+ Minolta/Sigma/Tamron lenses I have) but price difference comes into play....
    Might get my hands on a used a77 now and wait for the 36mp (or higher according to rumors) a99s that is supposed to come out toward the end of the year....

    I wish my Nikons had that Manual Focus ability too, looks amazing!
    Well done as usual!
