At the bottom in memo; it's better to put an invoice number in there, especially small contractor bills. utility bills are ok here, maybe put in the month.

If the mistake is small like say wrong number in date, fix it and then initial it. If it's a large mistake, like writing the wrong amount. Start over with a new check and tear the old one to piece, Record in you check recording booklet that that check number became void. Use the word VOID.
