Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a type of dialysis used primarily in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury. It provides continuous, 24-hour-a-day treatment, which is gentler than traditional intermittent hemodialysis
      Purpose
CRRT helps remove waste products, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood when the kidneys are not functioning properly.
      Indications
It is used in patients who are hemodynamically unstable, have severe fluid overload, or other conditions that make intermittent dialysis unsuitable.
      Mechanism
Blood is continuously passed through a filter to remove waste and excess fluids. Depending on the type, this can involve filtration (hemofiltration), diffusion (hemodialysis), or a combination (hemodiafiltration).
      Patient Monitoring
Continuous monitoring of vital signs, fluid balance, and laboratory values is crucial.
      Circuit Monitoring
Ensuring the integrity of the circuit, checking for clotting, and maintaining the prescribed flow rates are key tasks.
      Complications
Potential complications include hypotension, infection at the catheter site, electrolyte imbalances, and clotting of the filter.
CRRT requires close attention and specialized knowledge, making the role of nurses critical in managing therapy effectively and ensuring patient safety.
