Nicely done documentary of your engine replacement. The violin sonata by Bethoven was a plus. Thanks so much. This is my third time watching it over the past year.
What a joy! My grandpa used to fix this machines in the Argentinean Army, back in the days. I did help later in life to check arround, what a joy to drive this machines. Thanks for the video and your work!
Shocking!!! Is all I can say. Your patience is unbelievable. Working in your front yard, no lights, no climate control.... Your wide range of skills...amazing. the fact that you cut and weld on the ground makes me crazy to watch. Also the use of the flap wheels...ugh!! those things are terrible... lol Come work for me in my fab shop in Co. In my shop with good quality tools, equipment, lights and climate control you would be amazing...
I was pulled in the moment I spotted Unimog and the double-A frame gantry crane. Thanks for recording, editing and elevating your terrific time-lapse engine swap.
I got tired just watching this guy work....I complain when I have to change a heating furnace small blower motor takes me 2 hrs... enjoyed the music on a sunny afternoon....Good Job !! One man with all the right tools. And the “ patience “ !!!
What a great Video ,reminds me of the good old days when mechanical repairs were a joy,,Worked on these for the Australian Army they still have a few around,I do believe they still buy new ones along with the Land Rover Defender,,Great Stuff.
Hey, I saw this video about this guy, working on a stinking Unimog, changing the engine... And just imagine the music. Some classic shit!!.... Seriously, this is awesome, love the combination of the "rough" guy doing this dirty work all by himself, but there is beautiful music in the background, not the usual heavy metal stuff. You did a great job, and I absolutely adore the subtlety hidden in this video. Keep on moggin.
Thanks man! I really appreciate this comment.. made my day! Yeah, I try to do something different for music as the heavy metal stuff is just so overdone and has no soul. The classical, I find makes the film enjoyable and relaxing to watch every time.
Love vids like this. he sure knows Unimogs. Wish this was a restore vid, would've been great. Bring the whole girl back to life. Looks like Arizona desert, good place for the Unimog.
Like the classical during the rebuild, which you did excellently, but would rather hear the purr of the new engine. Still amazed at the excellent cab extension.
again, friend, you are an inspiration to many...i could only wish to have your skill and enthusiasm, then my days of prepping for the worst may begin...again, bravo to you!
I bought a Unimog 404 from the French army, and with several spare parts including a gearbox and an engine that had never been mounted on any MOG! I got a new vehicle!
I sure could use your expertise in Reno! I have a 1973 406 that is down for the count on a hi-low shifter and possible clutch replacement...I am stumped out of my mind how to pull the transmission, tear it down and replace or repair the fork to get it operating again...Beautiful job on Your Unimog!
J' ai conduit un Unimog pendant mon service militaire en Allemagne (Landau) en 1979. Très bon souvenir, véhicule très souple, trop peut être ! Très agréable à conduire.
Wish I had that Unimog 404. But what I wish I really had was your skill set. Watched all your videos on the Unimog and you do really good work. The whole time I watch you working on the body I kept thinking of my grandfather shouting "measure twice, cut once". Hope you drive the hell out of it for many, many, many miles and enjoy everyone of them. Good luck.
Dear, congratulations on the beautiful work. Very good taste demonstrated by the beautiful symphony, allied with dedication to mechanical engineering. Congratulations on your dedication. Antonio Lopes, Rio de Janeiro - Brazil.
Great refurbishment, not yet another shiny restoration! Engine I think is very close to the 220S and similar MB cars of the 1960's? Clearly the old engine needs to become a coffee table if it's not going to have an overhaul.
Que carro maravilhoso Foi muito surpreendente vc desembalar o motor com 32 anos de vida, mas sem nenhum km rodado, isso realmente é muito interessante e satisfatório! parabéns, foi um excelente trabalho!!
I miss my Unimog, the two gear thing in reverse was fun, I used to do that when ever I had some one in the cab and wanted to make it look complicated. ;-)
Yep, you can still buy these time capsules! I get all my parts from Expedition Imports in California. They bought out all the Unimog parts warehouses in europe, so you can still get engines packed away like new. Fun fact... the engines also come in an air-drop crate (I also have one of these in the backyard). It is pressurized to 1.5 bar with nitrogen to preserve the engine when they built them in the 1980s. When you open them up they are exactly as they were the day they were built.
@@desertpir8 Is packed like that because Unimogs were tough & used a lot in many Army forces for many different things, so when they got broken, need a new engine specially for military all parts need to reach in best condition and if it get shipped by boats it need to be free of corrosive sea salt any moisture or humidity, that is why inside the military crate is the engine wrapped in a pressurized cell same story is for shipment of the front & rear portal axles, clutches & gearboxes & driveshafts..
I agree, I think that we are in the same section of desert. I just picked up a '61 404 with a radio box and it's about to under go a restoration, would love to pick your brain for helpful info. I have a shop in Tempe that will be the location of the resurrection project. BTY, fantastic job on the video.
Quite possibly. I'm in the Phoenix metro area. If you are nearby and need service help with you truck, I am happy to help at reasonable rates or barter. I also have some spares on hand. My email is desertpir8 at gmail.com
Nice job !!! Brings me back lon gtime ago.... Drove one of these in Germany in 1983 carrying ammo....and in Gabon in 1990 in the jungle on oil fields....Lovely truck, reliable engine, off road masterpiece...Thanks for sharing !
Years ago I had a Mercedes Benz W108 which had the same engine as this Unimog. Have great fond of Mercedes Benz vehicles for their quality and good engineering.
Thanks for the video man. Replacing the engine alone was a great achievement, you are a master of mechanics dude. But I suspect you will smell burned oil for a long time inside that cabin 😉
Hi desertpir8!!! Wonderfull video! Congratulations for it and for the really impressive major replacement you've done. I work since many years in Mercedes Benz Argentina. I've got the pleasure of assembling the last argentinean produced Unimogs in 1994. Yes, some 416. Very nice, versatile and reliable machine. Something in your video got my attention: the engine you worked with was a gasoline one. I didn't know that there were produced Gasoline Unimogs, since here -and I I think mostly worldwide- engines are diesel's. Well, once again, nice Truck. Congrats! Best regards Dario
The 404 is the onliest Mog with a gas engine. All the others are diesel. But here in Germany it's common that many owners build a diesel engine in it due to the fuel consumption...
I'm really surprised that the engine replacement process was so complicated. But I suppose that they figured it was so well engineered that it wouldn't need to be done very often if at all. I've found that most military machines are designed to be repaired quite easily and quickly with a limited amount of tools. Correct me if I'm wrong. I've never had the opportunity to work on a Unimog. Although it's on my list to own one. I was in Austria last year but was unable to convince my wife to bring one home. I probably have a better chance of moving there. That's where her family is from. Honestly, if it wasn't for the language barrier I would move there in an instant.
The older mogs were definitely NOT built with major service in mind. Anything like that, the body has to come off. There are some shortcuts you can do to replace clutch, etc, with engine in the truck, but I prefer to lift the body off to inspect everything when I do that kind of work. The newer mogs, they made a ton of changes and they are designed to be easily serviced. As a comparison, a transmission swap on one of these 404s takes about 40-60 hours as the ENTIRE truck has to be dismantled due to the transmission being part of the suspension. The newer SBU (square body unimog) , the transmission can be swapped in about 3-4 hours.

Amazing, my friend the way you just took it apart methodically and reassembled it. I wish I was nearby to pay you a visit. Respect.
I was pulled in the moment I spotted Unimog and the double-A frame gantry crane. Thanks for recording, editing and elevating your terrific time-lapse engine swap.
Now THAT is an unboxing !!
A thing of beauty.
I like it when a man knows what to do and how to do in his life.
This is a dream-machine for adventurous type folk . They have insane ground clearance . It doesn't need a lift kit and bigger tires .
Happiness is having neighbours like this man.
Keep up the good work
I got tired just watching this guy work....I complain when I have to change a heating furnace small blower motor takes me 2 hrs...
enjoyed the music on a sunny afternoon....Good Job !! One man with all the right tools. And the “ patience “ !!!
I bet the decibel level inside the unimog is off the chart have an excellent day
Just loved these Mogs from my Rhodesian Army days such reliable multi purpose vehicles, nice to see her up and running.
One of my all-time favourite Unimog videos! A Unimog is pretty much the only vehicle i would swap my Laplander for. Thanks for sharing!
What a great Video ,reminds me of the good old days when mechanical repairs were a joy,,Worked on these for the Australian Army they still have a few around,I do believe they still buy new ones along with the Land Rover Defender,,Great Stuff.
Can't express how impressive this is! Inspirational to be sure!
It's like Andy's hobby headquarters but with a real car :)
So relaxing to watch something put together so nicely.
Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant ! loved watching this all the way through. What a gorgeous beast of a machine.
The greatest ever job I have seen so far. You are so talented bro keep producing such fabulous outputs . I have 421 1982 in Saudi Arabia .
My guy had his watch the whole time working… real OG 🙌

My kinda guy…
Always wanted a Unimog albeit with a OM615, ..17..36. Served on US Diesel powered unterseeboots. Thank you. Narragansett Bay
The bigger mogs all have diesels. I also have a Unimog 416 w/ om352 6 cylinder diesel.
great to illustrate what it's like to really be driving inside one..
Love vids like this. he sure knows Unimogs. Wish this was a restore vid, would've been great. Bring the whole girl back to life. Looks like Arizona desert, good place for the Unimog.
Impresive how simple ware back then... No electronics.. trucks for a lifetime
Like the classical during the rebuild, which you did excellently, but would rather hear the purr of the new engine. Still amazed at the excellent cab extension.

do not wish ... just do it ... and learn by doing ... believe me , it works !
Mann, bei dir sitzt ja jeder Handgriff. Dich möchte ich gerne als Nachbarn haben. Super gut!!!!
Nice vid - the Beethoven is a really nice change from the usual generic metal/rock!
STELAR PARLOV'S ''LOVE '' IS PRETTY GOOD TOO...
100% agreed
so true !
I'm impressed by your mechanical skills. Great job.
I bought a Unimog 404 from the French army, and with several spare parts including a gearbox and an engine that had never been mounted on any MOG! I got a new vehicle!
What a great video. Its amazing what you can find on RUclips when you cant sleep. Absolutely terrific job and the time lapse was perfect. Well done.
Great video, with the best way, to remove the spare tire 👌

What an excellent job and you did all this without an air wrench!
I have air and electric tools. But when working on Mogs, I usually like to use hand tools.
J' ai conduit un Unimog pendant mon service militaire en Allemagne (Landau) en 1979. Très bon souvenir, véhicule très souple, trop peut être ! Très agréable à conduire.
Coolest thing I've seen all week..and almost like I was at a concert in Vienna!
I wish you was my neighbor, you the man, I love working on old car's and trucks. GOD bless.
Wish you were my neighbor too!
Wish I had that Unimog 404. But what I wish I really had was your skill set. Watched all your videos on the Unimog and you do really good work. The beauty of its simplicity and reliability
Super mechanic, super film, super truck, super music!!!!!
Thanks for this video ... my machine, I drove him in 1970/71 one year during my army time at the german army ... I still know every screw today :-)
Thank you for posting this. I found it thoroughly entertaining as well as informative.
Unimog with cactus at sight. Very nice.

Yes, the engine is an M180 engine. Same design as the 220s sedan engines. State of the art in 1955 when these trucks came out!
Que carro maravilhoso
Foi muito surpreendente vc desembalar o motor com 32 anos de vida, mas sem nenhum km rodado, isso realmente é muito interessante e satisfatório! parabéns, foi um excelente trabalho!!
Beautiful and solo.. a great man.
I miss my Unimog, the two gear thing in reverse was fun, I used to do that when ever I had some one in the cab and wanted to make it look complicated. ;-)
to see the way that new motor was packed away was awesome!!! it really was a time capsule
perfect condition ,,,mint in fact!!!

Awesome - ! Strangely hypnotic video. This man certainly knows his Moggies - !
Золотые руки у мужика! Уважаю таких людей.

Good job mister. You have a great machine, it is a strongest truck. Congratulation from Ecuador. Nice video.

Nice ride, good work, well done..... Enjoy it!
Nice job !!!
Brings me back lon gtime ago....
Drove one of these in Germany in 1983 carrying ammo....and in Gabon in 1990 in the jungle on oil fields....Lovely truck, reliable engine, off road masterpiece...Thanks for sharing !
Very Jealous of both the truck and the skilled workmanship. Well done indeed.
Wow, impressive ; you sure know what you are doing ! Bravo !
awesome maschine . i drove the mg43 in a mercedes as a recon scout .. good memories
Years ago I had a Mercedes Benz W108 which had the same engine as this Unimog. Have great fond of Mercedes Benz vehicles for their quality and good engineering.
hi bro, it is purely an art works. excellent!
Thanks for the video man. Replacing the engine alone was a great achievement, you are a master of mechanics dude. But I suspect you will smell burned oil for a long time inside that cabin 😉
The oil was from the original engine build.. just burned off oil from the manifolds. It cleared up in a few minutes.
Just lovely.
i don t know why but i feel like i can do it on my kitchen table😁 great job
Impressive work, great video
Nice work, hats off

very nice video good job brother
Man! You built so much character with this engine swap. No power tools here! Also, I'm surprised this is a gas engine. I thought Unimogs were diesel.

Very nice video, John
a wonderful piece of engineering that mercedes overheadcam straight 6, but it surprises me its not a diesel
great music too, better than most videos
Wow - that was beautiful
I didn't know you have to take the roof off and disassemble the whole thing to get to the engine replacement on a Unimog. Now I am educated.
The Unimog 404 is a very special vehicle. :)
Outstanding job and very impressive video!
This was fun to watch.....impressive.
Really enjoyed this , thank you!!
This great. You must have had such a great time on this project! Very cool!
I had a lot of fun! Working on these trucks is enjoyable for me.
.
Congratulations from Colombia ... !!!
Great work !
you are most happiest boy in the worlds :D
Really well made video! Nice work :)
Wonderfull !! I love it, even the music goes well with the video. Congratulations !
