  • Nine out of ten people who go in for surgery every day in the US will be prescribed an Opioid to manage their pain. Repeated studies have shown that many of these patients will become dependent and possibly addicted. Dr. Zaafran’s team has developed a data-driven approach that, in clinical trials, reduced the number of new dependencies to zero.
Ahmed is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Lucid Lane. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist with a practice in the San Francisco Bay area. He trained at The University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in anesthesiology prior to joining the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine from 2012-2021. In 2013, he completed his Certification in Entrepreneurship and Global Innovation through the Graduate School of Business (GSB) Stanford Ignite Program, which led to his role as the Director of Development for Stanford Medicine X-Middle East Region and as a team member of Stanford Healthcare Innovation. What a scary, but accurate analogy “2 out of 10 of those cars don't have breaks”. I'm glad to see this talked about and bring it together to empower individuals: opioid dependence, surgery, trauma, mental health, support systems, technology, accessibility and a tailored, data driven approach. I am glad to see a preventative approach.

Super insightful, especially the distinction between addiction and dependency; I've have always felt that post-treatment care is often overlooked, especially the importance of how we approach it The stuff you spoke about can begin being applied at home right now with education and shared empathy!

Great story and work. I wish that medical community cared that much about drug addicts. People who may not be a part of that group BUT have to withdrawal off of any opioid. Number one cause of death in USA ages 22-44 is overdose and these group of people are the most neglected. How we are treating substance use disorder with 1939 information is irresponsible. Again, thank you for the work you're doing IT ALL MATTERS and you may have saved Samantha from a lifetime battle or possibly death we will never know. The data reflects that current opioid treatments must not be working if number one cause of death ages 22-44 is overdose. Can not imagine how the recovery rates would increase having 24/7 access to someone during the first year or maybe longer for the addicted. It's a brutal road my friend I know I am an addict on suboxone with no end in sight. Blessings

There are approximately 2 million people in the US who struggle with OUD. There are over 50 million people who live with complex or disabling pain.
    Withdrawal lasts a few days.
Disabling pain can last for months, even years.
Many of us have complex medical conditions that are incurable and lifelong.
Prohibition and the under-prescribing of opioids for pain is why we have skyrocketing illicit polysubstance overdoses.
Not pain patients, and not pain meds.
    Opioids save lives.
