A Data-Driven Solution for Preventing Opioid Dependence and Addiction | Ahmed Zaafran | TEDxReno

- Nine out of ten people who go in for surgery every day in the US will be prescribed an Opioid to manage their pain. Repeated studies have shown that many of these patients will become dependent and possibly addicted. Dr. Zaafran’s team has developed a data-driven approach that, in clinical trials, reduced the number of new dependencies to zero.

What a scary, but accurate analogy “2 out of 10 of those cars don't have breaks”. I'm glad to see this talked about and bring it together to empower individuals: opioid dependence, surgery, trauma, mental health, support systems, technology, accessibility and a tailored, data driven approach. I am glad to see a preventative approach.
Education, empathy and accessibility - The total package!
Thanks for creating a safety net for so many who didn’t realize they were at risk. The future of this work is inspirational!
I love the convergence of technology, empathy and commerce to help make the world a better place. Well done Lucid Lane team.
Super insightful, especially the distinction between addiction and dependency; I've have always felt that post-treatment care is often overlooked, especially the importance of how we approach it The stuff you spoke about can begin being applied at home right now with education and shared empathy!
You are doing such important work and spreading a message our country needs very much. Stay relentless!
This was incredibly well done, Doc. This message is so important for everyone who is contemplating surgery to hear. You are making a difference!
Great to see mindfulness acknowledged as a viable part of medicine. And Dr. Zaafran seems to be just the guy to lead the charge.
I didn't know how mindfulness can help in such an impactful way, thanks for sharing the knowledge
Thank you all for the support!
You totally nailed it! This message is super important for anyone struggling with opioid addiction. Way to make a difference!
Absolutely Amazing! Finally something is being done about the opioid crisis.
Sadly the need for this type of innovation has never been greater …. And needed. Hid speed getting this into the lives of those needing help.
Very important topic to be addressed in light of the opioid discussion
This is such a great explanation of the medical opiate crisis. So grateful someone is doing this work!
Such an important message and powerful delivery. Thank you for spreading the word and making a difference!
Very impressive. This is a much needed service.
Excellent presentation and very informative. Very important information about a very real and serious issue in our country!
Great delivery by Dr Ahmad, incredible listen.
Your impressive and insightful message has the potential to make a difference in the lives of those considering surgery and can be applied with education and empathy right now.
So proud of you Ahmed! And excited to see you help more and more ppl !
Informative, easy to understand and much needed!
Exciting work!
This is so needed! Thank you for your work.
Thank you for sharing this incredibly important information and for educating us about the difference between dependency and addiction. Our society and health systems desperately needs this solution to prevent opioid addiction and help those needing surgeries to recover in an empowered way, minimizing adverse effects from prescribed opioids. Lucid Lane's empathetic and remote care solution is a game changer!
Inspiring, motivating and alarming all at the same time, thank you for sharing doc.
Great story and work. I wish that medical community cared that much about drug addicts. People who may not be a part of that group BUT have to withdrawal off of any opioid. Number one cause of death in USA ages 22-44 is overdose and these group of people are the most neglected. How we are treating substance use disorder with 1939 information is irresponsible. Again, thank you for the work you're doing IT ALL MATTERS and you may have saved Samantha from a lifetime battle or possibly death we will never know. The data reflects that current opioid treatments must not be working if number one cause of death ages 22-44 is overdose. Can not imagine how the recovery rates would increase having 24/7 access to someone during the first year or maybe longer for the addicted. It's a brutal road my friend I know I am an addict on suboxone with no end in sight. Blessings
Very useful talk and you never know when you might need this yourself!
what a wonderful way to show care , concern for humanity while providing treatment. Well done and well presented
There are approximately 2 million people in the US who struggle with OUD. There are over 50 million people who live with complex or disabling pain.
Withdrawal lasts a few days.
Disabling pain can last for months, even years.
Many of us have complex medical conditions that are incurable and lifelong.
Prohibition and the under-prescribing of opioids for pain is why we have skyrocketing illicit polysubstance overdoses.
Not pain patients, and not pain meds.
Opioids save lives.
Super impressive
Great talk. Very interesting stuff.
