John Madden would have absolutely loved this. The free kick was his favorite obscure rule. Back on New Year's 1989 he was calling a playoff game between the 49ers and Vikings, and he was ecstatic when San Francisco got a fair catch at the end of the half and sent out their kicker. RIP Madden.
It is an ancient rule lol. Basically, if you call fair catch, you can kick the ball from the spot of the catch in a kickoff formation, and if the ball goes through the uprights, it is counted as a field goal. The 15-yard penalty put it in range. If it is a miss, like we saw in 2019 in London, the other team gains possession and can return it if it remains in bounds.
The critical part is that it essentially has to be with no time remaining in a half because that’s the only scenario where it makes sense to take a free kick over maintaining possession and running a play from scrimmage like normal.
It happens once every few years 49ers tried it agaist I think the packers when Jim Harbaugh was coaching them Edit I waa wrong 49ers did it agaist the rams in 2013 Lions did it against the packers in 2008
funny thing is, Jim Harbaugh actually did the fair catch free kick about a decade ago when he was the coach of the 49ers. They didn't make it, but was fun to see him do it again.
lol yes. The announcers were doing an excellent job explaining the situation while tom and Brandon were completely befuddled. I was listening to both at the same time 😂
You always have the option to take the free kick, but you would almost never do it because you are giving up a 1st and 10 for an extremely long field goal attempt 99% of the time. So the only times you ever see it is when the ball is fair caught in field goal range with no time on the clock to make it worth doing anything else. It's extremely rare because the stars need to align
This rule goes back all the way to the origins of the game. Make a “fair catch”, and you can elect to immediately make a “free kick”. The only time it would ever be chosen is in circumstances like this, because why else would you give up your chance to possess the ball and attempt to score a touchdown?
I yelled "FAIR CATCH KICK" at 10:30PM at night and then explained the rule to my very disinterested girlfriend in great detail. It's one of the best obscure rules in football, right up there with the drop kick and the 1 point safety.
Me and my dad got to witness this live and we had no idea this was a rule. Damn. My dad has been watching football his whole life and he didn’t even know it was a rule. Wow. Just wow
Wow, you're less than 5 years old? Congratulations man, the last time it was attempted was in 2019; the last time it was successful was 1976. They happen ever so often, the longest drought was from 1989 to 2005, otherwise expect to see one every so many years (normally 3-7 years since 1971).
Y'all are confused cause you don't wear an earbud. They were specifically commenting on this during the broadcast, saying it was a possibility, and wondering if the coaches would have any idea they could do it, and talking stats about the last time it happened. So, there was no surprise or confusion for people watching at home.
This has the same energy as when you're playing a game as kids and no one can agree on a call so y'all just try to kill time while someone goes & asks an adult
Perna, the "free kick after fair catch" rule is foundational to ALL codes of Football (that allow catching the ball). If you make a fair catch (or are interfered with while making one), you can IMMEDIATELY kick from that spot. The other team must fall back 10 yards and cannot rush. This rule is literally 150 years old and goes by "mark" in Rugby and Australian Rules. Fouling the catcher was key, since it shifted the attempt into range. I have known about this rule since I was 10, I'm stunned you obviously don't (yes, it's rare, but it happens every couple of years, this is first one I've seen made).
I am old and not a football groupie, but I knew about this because as a kid we lived in Wisconsin and of course were Packers fans. Paul Hornung kicked one in 1964 which was widely discussed.
Packers actually attempted this in the not-terribly-distant past (recent enough that Crosby was the kicker). It was a much longer kick though and it came up just short. Definitely not a new rule, though, just not one that comes up very often. IIRC the opponent has to line up as though it's a kickoff, they can't do a standard field goal block line with everyone shoulder-to-shoulder. That's why it looks weird.
How the most dramatic things find the Perna. I love to see it 😂😂😂 Blocked FG and now Free Kick FG 😂😂😂 Dear Perna, if you continue to Run that Curse Wheel, The Curse will find you in some very weird ways 😂😂😂😂
"After a fair catch, the receiving team has the option to put the ball in play by a snap or a fair catch kick (field goal attempt), with fair catch kick lines established ten yards apart. All general rules apply as for a field goal attempt from scrimmage. The clock starts when the ball is kicked. (No tee permitted.)" John Madden used to talk about it all the time when I was growing up. First one since 1976 or something.
Bro was really crying about a rule that only shows maybe every 5-10 years, it’s fuckin awesome seeing it actually being used and it was actually successful. First successful use of the rule in 48 years.
It's actually bit embarrassing they don't figure out the fair catch kick rule as a football youtuber. Pretty sure more than one kicker try this past few years.
Somewhere, Bill Belichick is smiling that a special teams play scored on an old, obscure rule.
shoutout to Doug Flutie
@@AhedratronI believe that was a drop kick that he scored on for an extra point.
@@deathsyth8888 which you can also do as a fair catch kick. I read Belichick and obscure special teams play and immediately thought of that drop kick
They should bring back rugby-style balls for free-kicks/dropkicks. They already use K-balls for special teams; just add R-balls to the mix.
I really like the whole arc from Perna mocking Harbaugh at the beginning to cursing him at the end.
Jim Harbaugh attemted this in 2013 with the 49ers
He knew the rules
Hasn’t happened in 48 years… of course I go to bed before being able to see this play live.
My condolences. Living in Europe must be horrific.
@ yeah no I live in America I’m just tired
Could be worse, I'm so nervous about a new job tomorrow that I forgot football was even on tonight...
Glad I saw this live!!
Then how are you awake right now?
John Madden would have absolutely loved this. The free kick was his favorite obscure rule. Back on New Year's 1989 he was calling a playoff game between the 49ers and Vikings, and he was ecstatic when San Francisco got a fair catch at the end of the half and sent out their kicker. RIP Madden.

Oh wait is that what happened during that Auburn vs Alabama game with the huge missed field goal return for TD
@@djmarz7123 Nope regular field goal returned back
The critical part is that it essentially has to be with no time remaining in a half because that’s the only scenario where it makes sense to take a free kick over maintaining possession and running a play from scrimmage like normal.
As a charger fan, watching perna go from being smug to being incredibly pissed off is hilarious 😂
Hahaha love it😂
As someone who isn't a Chargers fan, this was still fun
As someone whos a Raiders fan i love when Denver loses for Perna worst series 😂😂😂😂@ElderGamerX
the last time this happened was actually only a couple years ago in london with the buccaneers, but it was missed
Was it at Twickenham? Because that would have been apt for a play from rugby!
Yeah. I think what Tom read was the last time a free kick was actually made rather than last one that was attempted.
It happens once every few years
49ers tried it agaist I think the packers when Jim Harbaugh was coaching them
Edit I waa wrong 49ers did it agaist the rams in 2013
Lions did it against the packers in 2008
And that 3 points mattered a whole lot because it meant the Broncos couldn’t tie in one score and go into OT.
Mason Crosby attempted a free kick of 69 yards in 2008 ( I think). Look the video up, he was just short.
funny thing is, Jim Harbaugh actually did the fair catch free kick about a decade ago when he was the coach of the 49ers. They didn't make it, but was fun to see him do it again.
That’s why you gotta listen to the broadcast so you can figure out what is happening
lol yes. The announcers were doing an excellent job explaining the situation while tom and Brandon were completely befuddled. I was listening to both at the same time 😂
Perna going from taunting Jim to being befuddled because he wasn't listening to the broadcast is hilarious and deserved
Jim Harbaugh returns to the NFL and already we've got a play from 48 years ago. When they said he was old school, they weren't lying! 😄
Last time it was made was in 1976. But the last attempt was 2019. Harbaugh tried it with SF in 2013.
the last MADE kick was in the 70s (1976), the last ATTEMPT was in 2019 by Joey Slye
This was the 29th regular season Free Kick attempt and only the 7th completed.
" that's what you get Jimm' 😂

Shit like this always grounds me and reminds me I'm still a fake fan of this league. Holy shite

If you had the audio on, you would be much less confused
they can't play the audio from the game on the stream
@CrimsonKiwii I know, thats the point I'm trying to make. They explained it all on the broadcast but they couldn't hear it.
Nice! We need more free kicks in this world.
Just go watch rugby union. They do this all the time
Last time it was made was 1976, last time it being attempted was by Carolina kicker Joey Slye in a 2019 game against the Buccaneers.
"What are the rules" always sunny moment
Crosby tried it for the Packers once, how could Tom not have known this? He missed it though
This is the best GPS clip all season! The head scratching was phenomenal! Good thing for SD that their coach knows the rules. 😀
*LA
Only Perna can get tortured by a rule that hasn't been successfully leveraged since 1976 and as a Chiefs fan, I am so here for it.
Yeah, we love watching Perna's suffer 😂😂😂
I yelled "FAIR CATCH KICK" at 10:30PM at night and then explained the rule to my very disinterested girlfriend in great detail. It's one of the best obscure rules in football, right up there with the drop kick and the 1 point safety.
I was a punt returner in HS it the fair catch and free kick has always been a rule 9 I was in HS 1983-1985 )
Mason crosby had a free kick in like 08. He missed cause it was a 70+ yard attempt
Me and my dad got to witness this live and we had no idea this was a rule. Damn. My dad has been watching football his whole life and he didn’t even know it was a rule. Wow. Just wow
I honestly don't know why I knew about the free kick rule after a fair catch but I'm glad I got to see it happen in my lifetime.

There are videos about weird football rules on RUclips with this exact situation explained

I was so happy to see this happen I didn’t think I’d ever witness a successful fair kick in my lifetime
Tom mentioned more than once that he watches the games he livestreams on mute.
It’s happened before, just never was successful. Crosby attempted one in his rookie year I believe
Crosby's attempt was 69 yards.
@thedoctorprofessor1817
It was against the Lions, in their winless season, I believe

I remember Jeff Fisher trying one back in his days with the Titans.
Perna playing checkers n jimmy boy playing chess

This rule and the one point safety rule are my 2 favorite obscure rules
Momentum is real and that kick changed it
I read about this as a kid and have been waiting my entire life to see it. Now I just need a 1-point safety.
i think this happened a few years ago, but it ended in a Kick-6 😂😅
It last happened in 2019, Carolina attempted it wide right and Bucs did not return it which ended the 2nd quarter.
The worm has turned
We used to practice this every Thursday, never got to do it.
Herbert and Dicker look the same from behind - Perna
My Dad told me this rule 50+ years ago. You guys need to educate yourselves. Was used in colleges back in the '50s a bit.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks of that shifty Staind song whenever I hear “It’s been awhile”
Came back from the bathroom and they were lined up for the free kick. I was very confused for a solid twenty minutes.
That rule has been there. I've only seen it live once. It happened in a Cheifs game like 15-20 years ago.
Packers actually attempted this in the not-terribly-distant past (recent enough that Crosby was the kicker). It was a much longer kick though and it came up just short. Definitely not a new rule, though, just not one that comes up very often.

Feel like this wouldve been the perfect time for the clip of Lombardi yelling "What the hell's going on in here?"
Harbaugh defo goes to sleep reading the nfl rule book
We always practiced covering it in High school
Im so upset i didnt see this reaction live 😭
Lmfao Perna you did a vid on this rule!
Perna can't even remember who he curses right after spinning the wheel. How do you expect him to remember that?
I think, the Panthers tried a free kick a few years ago against the buccaneers, but missed it...
Week 18 Perna complains about the forward pass being a bad rule because Mahomes is too good at it.
Hey whatever stops the chiefs from 3peating
You work fast
This kick has been attempted a several times over the years... it just hasn't scored in a long time... was in the 70's last time it scored it seems.
They did this a few weeks ago. In a Panthers game.
Years ago you mean lol that was 2019
Perna's adult tantrum cost the Broncos the game
I think the Lions tried one back when Sam Martin was the punter. Something like 2014 or so.
I think teams need to bring out ancient plays that no one knows about more often haha.
Perna needs to learn a few things it’s been there last successful one was 1976
love jim
Only reason I knew the rule cause my team the Panthers I think tried in a London game
Last time also was by the chargers btw
I believe the Chargers also made the last successful free kick in 1976.
The Panthers got this 5 years ago, but Joey Slye missed from 60

This is not in fact a new rule.
It’s funnier with just the packers podcaster
"I don't think it will matter, but"
And after that it was all chargers, damn.
Doc Azrael really just dono'd for the Dicker FG. Kinda like a P for the D. Nice!
