    I'm LOVING Stories 2 so far, but I really prefer how genes worked in the first game. If we could have the first game's gene system, mainly the permanence of your monster's new element, but with the "put them anywhere you want" feature from Stories 2, I think it would be perfect.
    Also, it's a shame how elements no longer have as much of an effect on monsters and their kinship attacks. I really hope it's just broken and not intentional, because changing monster elements and seeing it reflecting in their kinship attacks (not just the end explosion) was one of my favorite features from the first game.

    • @Jakeylicious7891
      @Jakeylicious7891 3 года назад +6

      Mhs1 had fewer monsters and was easier to animate. You'd have to manually create several kinship attacks per element for every monster unless they literally just change the colour of the effects to reflect the colour you're using. That would be amazing, but that would require separate assets and probably would take another month or two worth of development.

    • @Aykalia

      it honestly just feels broken when you compare it to MHST1, and it probably is. they probably were expecting everything to be working right on release but something mightve happened. the pandemic, even though its getting to an end is still here and this could be one of the many things it affected, just a wild guess tho

  • @hybridgryph6931
    @hybridgryph6931 3 года назад +70

    Pretty disappointed with how theyve butchered the element change system in this game. It used to be hard to get certain really strong element monsties at certain points in the last game which was why having the element change was so useful.
    Having an ice Yian Garuga, a dragon Seregios or Molten Tiggy, having a water Green Nargacuga, HELL even the preorder bonus monsties I got such as my water Rathian or Fire Zinogre that helped carry me through points of the game and provided so much more flexibility. Getting to change an element meant I could have more focus on making sure I could vary my team more/have my favorites/make sure I had more attack type variation while still keeping every element type on my team.
    It sucks as honestly changing elements was one of my favorite parts and I made such good and interesting monsties.
    They tried to change the system but messed it up. I kinda miss how simple the element resistances and strengths were in the first game and them being unchanging with level and how I could see every one. I'm still trying to work out the use and ability of all my monsties and my own gear due to the lack of transparency of resistances themself vs the first game
    They really did kill one of the key components of the first game in terms of customization and mystery. In seeing another person's team and not knowing what elements they would have until the monstie came out.

      I think its because they used the first game data quite a bit in this sequel. (same animations, etc). So it effects the "OG" monsties appearance normally but not the new monsties. They must have cut corners and left in a lot of data from the first game without bothering to remove some of it such as the colour change. Maybe its to touch up on it later, or maybe they decided halfway through, hey this is a ton of work, our deadline cant allow us to make any more. This is probably why one of the NPCs have a fire element coloured Velocidrome, without any fire element genes.

  • @mindashy8030
    @mindashy8030 3 года назад +26

    The first game wasn't clear on how this change worked, but after a little research, the system was actually brilliantly simple. You got to see all elements, all genes that increased elemental attack would influence your monstie, and it would stick permanently onto the monstie because there was no elemental growth through leveling. I admit, I did already intend to not mess with elements too much, unless a monster already had a specific inclination to a secondary element, or maybe do my meme builds for an Ivory Lagi with Rath genes and a Ratha with Lagiacrus genes... But still, this is so opposite of what the first game promised. If I can't have a dragon Anjanath or a fire Deviljho or a water Gammoth, then these monsties aren't fully customizable.

    I am genuinely so sad that this feature was only partially implemented. I absolutely loved changing the element of my monsters in the first game and seeing how cool their kinship skills looked and how cool their color changes looked... I had things like a dragon Azure Rathalos, a water Seregios, and an electric Shrouded Nerscylla and it was my favorite thing that kept me coming back time and time again to keep getting monsties and changing their typings to see what they looked like. This is a simple scaling factor issue. Instead of converting the main element and adding a small percentile amount, it just adds a flat buff. So naturally as you progress the element buff you gave the monstie will be outgrown. Instead of a flat buff like say +20 Ice you can use a multiplier to keep the value slightly buffed but in the element of your choice. Example all elements become ice and get a 1.1x boost. In this way you keep your element of choice and still get a buff.
    It should go without saying though that this would break the game rather quickly as everyone grabs the best monstie and makes a version for each element.

    Hope this isn't spammy, but I really want this quote from a developer interview to get noticed and I don't think it's been put in anything except replies to comments.
    "In Monster Hunter Stories, we included a mechanism to change the attributes and elements of Monsties through channeling, but we have omitted that this time. We decided it is more efficient to develop strengths (for example the original attributes), and even among users who played Stories, not many people knew how the mechanism worked. Instead, for Stories 2 we greatly increased the number of skills that can be passed down, which I think increases the fun of creating original monsters." - Kenji Oguro, Director
    So with this all evidence points to them having intended to remove element changing from the game, and we can assume something went wrong where the mechanic remained but in a mostly broken form.

    This change from the first game is the biggest disappointment I've ever had with a Monster Hunter game. The concept of changing my monsters' elements as I see fit was one of my favorite parts of the first game and I was massively hyped to return to it in this game. Losing that feature honestly dents my interest in even finishing the game in the first place, as good as the rest of it is. It's like they made massive leaps forward with *every* other system from Stories 1, and then gouged out the coolest part...

  • @cozitatious

    element changing is baked into the engine and like original stories was intended to be a full feature. however the devs decided to not focus on it this time around because not many people used, or even knew about it in og stories. so in stories 2 its unfinished and not fully implemented. hopefully they rectify this with a patch or dlc because its an awesome system and it seems to be gaining some attention.

    Funny bit, I have a Water Azure Rathalos (I wanted to cover all 6 elements with my all dragons team and A.Rath, DQ Rath, and Kushala drew the short straws) and even though its dominant element has long returned to fire, it still shot water in a beam struggle with a Red Khezu just now. It didn't hit the elemental weakness so it appears to just be visual, but it's neat that it still has *something* aesthetic for all its water genes.

    • @shagore
      @shagore Год назад

      My theory is that entering a breath fight depends on the existence of a gene allowing "elemental ranged attack". Then it depends on that specific attack, so if your monstie's ranged attack is a blob of water instead of the usual fireball, it will be a water beam when the breath struggle happens. I encountered the same thing with my attempt at a fire Zamtrios (before I knew this didn't work past level 20-30) and that's the reasoning I came to.
      The thing I'm interested in now, is what happens if you put, say, both a "water beaming" gene and a "fire beaming" gene on a monstie? Will it pick the highest damaging one for its beam fight? Will it pick one randomly?

    I almost want to say that the coding on the genes is messed up: that the Element Up genes are meant to increase the growth rate stats. So while it wouldn't have an immediate factor: it would eventually level up to gain that new feature as the genes take over. Which would make a decent level grind for end game part of the play where once it is useful you then switch it out for better genes such as attacks and or the like.
    That being said, you would think this could also be passed down via all element genes to have that passive effect. Because that was arguably half the fun in stories 1 like Josh and Cotton's ice deviljho.

    To change change the system they will need to either make it a variant of the first game and make it so you can see the actual values of it and make it so that you change the blocks are (for that one monstie you are trying to change, not all of them) or they need to change it so it's literally flat values for everything and each element gene has a value that you can increase the flat amount. They could also do the first thing by making it so depending on the % increase in an element, that's how much a monstie will gain with 10% being one block, I feel like that would be the best way and easiest for the team to implement

    I disagree, it doesn't make your choice more meaningful, all it does is remove choice, if you want a team with all elements at least. You already have to worry about attack types (power speed tech) and non combat skills (since to properly explore you need at least fly, jump, swim, and ivy climb, and you could even add rock breaker into the "necessary field skills") so now if you want a team that is efficient both in combat and out of combat, well safe to say you're not gonna be able to have many of your fav monsters...
    Heck I already struggled to do so even without considering elements, and I'm missing rock breaker. So yeah, you have a choice, Either run with ur favs and not be able to do shit, or pick an effective team that you don't like, great, meaningful choices don't you think ?

AND allowed bingo stacking; which opens up a bunch of optimisation problems that i fully expect to see represented in competetive)... like the original was far from perfect (i.lagi was the strongest monster in the game with very little competition), but they took the wrong route to fixing problems and ended up making more

    The general issue is that Monstie genes are all flat modifications rather than % (or perhaps even growth modifiers), and is an issue with the overall system even outside of the "element change" mechanic. It effectively means that any skills provide less and less of a difference as your actual level increases. That +20 HP is a massive difference at low levels, but when base HP is getting into the 300s, an extra 20 is pretty insignificant. I was extremely displeased seeing a self-heal each turn gene on my Mizitsune, only to see it healing a paltry 10 per turn which is nearly pointless.
    Back to the topic at hand though, as said in the video, the growth rates eventually outstrip any element bonuses and make the Monstie revert back eventually. The entire system would work if the element+ genes also had "And causes increased growth in the element". That's literally all it would take. Done. But for some reason the devs simply decided not to.

      @@fishkingoftheaquarium7605 Fair enough, but did it explain how to do it? Was it easy to find that info again later? It looks like even IN the interview everyones linking to for the reasoning of this, the devs said "not many people knew how the mechanism worked" rather than not many people wanted to use it. I just don't see that as a valid reason to scrap it rather than make it more prominent/accessible, because clearly enough people find cosmetics and customization very important, if they didn't then capcom wouldn't be getting so increasingly scummy with the cosmetic DLCs and character edit vouchers.
