Hint: Because it's factory!
In this video I swap the factory car stereo out of my 1995 GMC Suburban for a brand new Sony MEX-N5300BT bluetooth CD Multimedia player. This truck is the same as most 1988-2000 Chevy and GMC Full-size trucks including Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Sierra, Silverado, Blazer and Escalade GMT-400 platform.

God. It makes it so nice when the old lady backs you up on fun stuff. That’s the way it should be. Backing each other up and understanding like that.
I have to say the interior behind the bezel is extremely clean for a car over 20 years! Way to go!!
SO GLAD YOU COULD COVER YOUR MELTED DASH with the besel lol -omg
I think I am the only person to have noticed that ???
Quick tip, don't click the head unit in until after you've tested it, if anything is wrong you won't need to use the keys to finesse it out, you could just pull it and find the issue easier.
Once you know everything is working as it should, then go ahead and click the unit into the DIN sleeve.
Your wife is awesome dude. Great job on the install. Super clean.
It's always cringy to see wire nuts in car audio …
Yeah.
if its all you got, why not🤷♂️
Paper.......... Even twist around other wires...... with labels to things not there anymore, wires going to no where. Puts panel back, umm there's a bigger problem.
right... not smart to use in a MOVING vehicle.. where they could possibly come apart and short out. solder+heatshrink is always the best method
Angel Raya I cringe too when I see that too
I got a 99 Chevy suburban LT top of the line with the original stereo system. Still sounds good.
NB: this run of trucks/SUVs (95-99 GMT400) =can= fit a double-DIN headunit into the dash. Metra makes two kits that allow you to do so:
95-3003G is the cheaper way - it has mounting brackets that fit the stock slots in the dash, and a faceplate to put over the stock dash face, but it requires some modification to the dash face to clear the front of the radio.
DP-3003 is the cleaner, but more expensive option - it includes a whole new dash face to replace your stock one, and mounting brackets to match it; it does require that you move the HVAC panel down about half an inch, but it includes templates to drill holes for the panel. It also only comes in the one color - textured black, but it can be painted to match the interior color if desired.
Small tip, move that mic to the top of the A Pillar so you can flip your visor down and still have the mic pointed at you
You took the time to shrink tube and solder but you ran the wire through a vent!?! ......come on now
lol
Where else was he going to run it?
@@Nyle95 further down and then under the instrument cluster. Given all the wire he had to roll up and wire tie at the end, he could have easily gone under the dash.
i've run klipsh horns through air conditioning ducts 19 speakers, and at 139 db, it'll sure gain attention. when it was a thing, klipsh horns had a 1/2" pipe thread on speaker core and replaced the horns into ducts
@@gregsmith7828 Yes and anything over about 90dB is cause for hearing damage.
I know that it was a slip of the tongue but the REM blue wire does not power the amplifier, instead it triggers the amplifier to turn on. I just wanted to save someone some confusion on that.
Jerryrigging the remote to the battery, one way to drain your battery
@@henrikpersson5420 it is of you are dumb enough not to put a switch on it. Its not the best way but it works just fine.
@@civic2980 it only powers when the headunit is on, so you don't need to fit a "DUMB" switch
correct, it just flips a relay within the amp powering it on
@@henrikpersson5420 it doesn't
Quick tip on the factory amp for the rear doors, if you bypass that amp you will have much more bass come out of the rear speakers, the factory amp will majorly limit sound from them. Trust from experience. In a suburban I worked on the amp is under the steering column tucked up fairly high. But it's a silver box about half the size of a brick. Just future reference if you want more sound out of your rear doors. Nice job on your install though. 👍🏼👍🏼
I want more sound out of my rear speakers.( Overhead 3rd row seats) and little less from the rear door (2nd row seating).
Original owner of a Chevy '95 4WD Suburban. Soon after buying, I replaced the factory unit with an Alpine unit, which lasted for twenty-some years. Just a little over a year ago, I bought a double DIN replacement dash bezel and installed an Alpine iLX-650 with Apple car play. Nice having in-dash navigation without having to squint at a tiny cell phone screen.
Car thieves could have shown you how to get the radio out much faster.
Not with the "theft lock" on the unit! 😄
xephael
Hey you’re stereotyping us Car Thieves, not all of us can take it out faster..!!
😂😂🤣🤣
What Car Thief takes a stock stereo ?? anyway.
@@generalzod7959 theft lock just means that when you put it in another vehicle it needs a code to be reset
I used a Sony head in my 2011 Silverado when I integrated an iPad Mini into the dash and I have been very happy with it.
Pioneer used to make a DIN and a half radio. Most GM kits usually have a corn tray at the bottom of them.
I have actually seen the din and half. When i was a kid my father had one in his old Lumina. Paired with Pionner speakers all around it sounded good.
@@pospc2 I have a DIN and a half in my 97 GMC from Pioneer.
@@jamesm568 has it held up well with age? Hows it compared to newer headunits? Obviously minus bluetooth and aux.
@@pospc2 It held up fine and does not look out of place. You still can buy them if you shop around.
A man’s ultimate dream ! A house a car they absolutely enjoy working on and a happy wife
Great, simple, and fun video Jimmy. Makes us all want to go out and do our radios ourself. Goes to show u that if u do ur homework on ur purchases, you'll always be pleased with the outcome
The real reason why an older standard car stereo like yours sucks is for the same reason everyones sucks, it's old. Things do wear out. I'm in the UK and drive a Vauxhall Vectra (called the Saturn Aura in the US) The factory headunit was okay to start with but as time wore on it wore out. I fitted the predecessor to the unit you fitted and was amazed at what I hadn't heard before. The Bluetooth is great, you can a million different things to it, and with the USB port on the front, who needs a CD player anymore? and the colour changing settings are just great
That's exactly what I've been looking for, for my 98 Tahoe. Thanks for the link.
If you don't opt to switch to a new "radio" in your dash there are some things you can do to enhance your stock stereo system. it starts with speakers. are they of good quality, have correct frequencies for location of speakers?in good shape? tone balance is important as well as balance (side to side, front to back)of sound. you can also, tap into the remote power on switching side of the stereo and use keyed switch to "start" additional equipment. if it has a stock "power booster. just divert wire to speakers into a multiplex unit that can reduce input. allowing additional amplifiers after stock radio ends, and additional components start.then off to speakers. Get a backup battery to handle additional equipment. isolated from the starting side . there are many tricks. just got to know where to put them and how it all works together and still have the functions of your stock radio, as well as enjoy the audio ( and or video while not driving) as you roll. It may take time to fit everything. but with a little time, creative ingenuity. it can be done.
My 99 tahoe has 2 batteries, and it's absolutely the way to go. Some car audio nuts pack like 4 batteries, and multiple alternators to power all their system. Mine with the two is plenty for me. One battery powers engine and starter, the other battery for dash, cab, and auxiliary. It's such a nice piece of mind knowing you have two batteries.
@@atmosrepair hopefully, you have your starting battery separated from your stereo batteries. i would actually go with 2 deep cycle optima group 31 batteries, an isolator so that your alternator charges both, but radio only drains from starting battery, and the rest of the system including amps power comes from deep cycle batteries
@@gregsmith7828 radio, dash, cab, auxiliary on it's own battery and engine, starter on it's own battery. They're in series so the alternator charges both of them. I have lots of battery power more than I need but it's great to have piece of mind knowing i am set in that depaetment.
Well dang wish my lady would say she's proud of me when I work on our cars and say she's annoying lol
Worst thing that can happen is my wife coming into the garage while I'm wrenching. Always takes at least 5 minutes to get back to where I was after she leaves. Can't live with them, can't live without them though.
The blue wire isn't used to "power" the rear amplifier, it's used to "turn on" the rear amplifier. This keeps the rear amplifier from constantly staying on & running the vehicle's battery down.
Kimbo Slice & Everything Nice yeah it’s just a control wire... it’s just a misuse of words on his part.
The blue wire even says rem out, antenna wires are a different kind of blue. Always connect the remote line if you have it unless you have an aftermarket amp
That last part about the blue wire now explains why my passenger speakers don’t work 🤯
Sweet! I was hoping that would help someone!!
@@1RoadGarage The blue wire is usually the remote turn on in most situations. Next video: Dedicated Amps/MORE Power, Stock deck is at best 5-15 watts before clipping (even though they all say 50 watts). You need a good solid 50-200 watts into those new speakers (clean watts! so stick to rockford fosgate or JL audio for amps).
I have to go back into my wiring harness to check this out. All my door speakers work and there was wiring to the speakers in the third row…. Been cut before I owned my burban, but want to get them working again. This was worth noting. Just have to trace all my wires to the harness and see what happens.
Sounds like he's got a good woman I like that ! it's hard to find a good girl these days vice versa. Good video I got to look for a new single DIN pop out screen mine broke
Love the 95-99 gm suv. 2 door 4x4 tahoes are my favorite.
I have a 95 2 door Tahoe. Great truck.
99 4x4 4 door tahoe! Absolutely love it, I have had 3 ford rangers, but moving up to the 5.7L V8 vortec and all the space in the Tahoe, I can never go back to a cramped ranger with V6
I bought a Ken wood from cruthfield too. They really do give you everything you need.
Not bad. I put my Pioneer's Mic at the top of the A-Pillar trim and ran it down. At the bottom of the A-Pillar, there is a hole where it leads inside the dash. I ran mine under there to the opening of the stereo.
Nice install. I was using a Single DIN for a while, but I have a Double DIN now. Surprisingly, for the GMT400s, the install and modifications are really not that bad. It is very nice and feature rich. In my opinion, it also looks better than the 1.5 DIN adapter you get for Single DINs. It also has Bluetooth, I coupled it together with an amp and a 10" sub and a backup camera. To segment the part about the blue wire, not all GMT400 trucks will have it. My 98 K1500 doesnt need it because it didnt have the rear amp. Best thing to do is test your connections before buttoning it up.
Oh, and a quick tidbit... There was a 1.5 DIN back in the 90s, by Pioneer. I believe they were the only ones who made one, and it was made for the GM and Chrysler vehicles at the time.
Yes, I have a small collection of "back-up" stereos for my 1993 Astro. The Pioneer DEH-P77DH, and it also works with the iPod Adapter that came out a couple years later through its "bus" system. I leave my iPod in the glove box and it fires right up when I start the car. Clarion also made a so-so unit with cassette, but not nearly as nice a unit as the Pioneer. I also have a couple of DEH-P47DH stereos in my little collection as well. For my 06 Tahoe, I'm using the OEM Bose stereo (6 disc changer, who uses those?), but I have an adapter (P.I.E.) that integrates through the XM port to integrate an iPod through that stereo which I just leave in the car, hidden all the time as well. They only come in when I want to update them.
The channel's budget must be increasing, Jimmy is regularly casting talent appearances now. 😁
I like watching your videos you always do a really good job on your vehicles, I don't care what anybody says .
I get that factory audio isn't the greatest thing in the world, but I get the feeling that first description was heavily laced with exaggeration. I've been in several older Delco vehicles and they all sounded decent, especially in the bass department. (For what it's worth, I find the older Ford systems to be really lacking.)
I should also say that I came to this video expecting a technical explanation of why many factory car audio systems don't sound great, but what I got instead was an instructional video on how to install a new system. Not necessarily a bad video by any means, but not what the video title implies.
I'll answer that aftermarket radios go boom boom boom. Factory radios can't be heard a mile away 😂😂😂😂😂😂
To be fair about the Bluetooth thing, this technology was around back then, there were just corporate wars going on over who's technology/products got used.
I've installed many head units and I'm pretty proficient in doing so, I have no need to install another one anytime soon, and yet, here I am...
😂 you and your wife sound like me and my wife. I installed a blutetooth kit on my 04 explorer called her told her shes on bt in the dinosaur, first thing she said was do i sound annoying, i replied"as usual dear"
I can relate. LoL
You never actually said why the "car stereo sucks".
I still have my original in my 1995 GMC Sierra SLT, although I immediately installed very expensive German speakers, a 12 inch subwoofer, and a 300-watt RMS amp when I bought the truck. (thanks to Hi-Fi Buys who is of course extinct)
Jeff My radio still works and all the speakers too. Maybe he’s wasn’t working cause someone else already tampered with it
All Sony units need its firmware updated. You need to download the updated file and install it on a USB thumb drive. The fix is for frequent no sound out of the speakers.
Same with my Panasonic. I got a new phone and the 2 units recognized each other but wouldn't pair. Always something.
When I replaced a factory radio with Kenwood, Crutchfield had cables for the radio right to the factory harness without soldering. I also wonder if that wiring harness butchery caused your other radio not to work properly.
Nice video Jimmy, thank's for the tutorial, that head unit reminds me of the one I installed in my 96 Blazer that I had back in high school. With some speaker and sub upgrades, that stereo was so loud that it shook the entire car.
can't wait to do mine on my 97
You never said why our factory stereo sucks lmao
Midnight _Hemi_13 he knows more about his wife's boyfriends shoe size than the why OUR stock radios suck
@@cesarconh895 The thumbnail suggests it's because it has a tape deck in it.
@@JERRYR708 Cassettes are back in now tho. They sound great in my stock radio with Dolby Cassette player and new speakers with a rear sub. Now play an old cassette that was played a million times then it will sound like poop.
he sorta did when he mentioned distortion. GM factory radios of that era suck because the head unit has a huge amount of distortion (THD spec when looking stuff up). I have a 01 Camaro with a very similar radio.
general motors has and still makes crappy sound systems
they moved to Bose to try to improve sound that has its
own problems i know those are pulled because of poor
sound quality hist video was very informative thank you
Exactly why I never pay extra for any factory "upgraded" sound since it introduces more problems later on when you go to upgrade, plus, the dealerships being the scammers that they pride themselves in being, love to only order cars with nav/crap you don't need, so they can gouge you even more in the sales process. It's amazing what $2500 in aftermarket car stereo stuff can get you compared to paying $5k in garbage "bose" + Nav "packages" that you could NEVER convince a car sales guy to just ADMIT completely suck. I'm still trying to determine: Is it pure hubris, lack of intelligence, or just plain greed that gets people out of bed every single day that function as a general manager and FI roles at most dealerships; If they didn't suck so bad at being humans, car dealerships and a lot of brands would have much better reputations than they do, but somehow it's an industry where the stupid gravitate towards when it comes to employment. Anyways, best thing I ever did was just go full active setup with a dedicated amp, one channel for each driver, zero compromises, lots of sound deadening = makes the commute much more exciting and when that prius driver who insists on taking >2.5 seconds per green light to hit the gas = just BASS them out at the next light and all of a sudden they have a faster reaction time. The real challenge though: Finding / discovering better music, not the crap we've all been trained to listen to.
By the way, I’m driving a 1998 Chevy suburban. Love it
If your hooking up an aftermarket stereo be prepared to do it a few times before u get it right.
My Panasonic was easy to hook up. It was figuring out all the multi purpose buttons and getting it to do what I want was the problem.
You can use the AUX and open any video on RUclips to check the sound, thumbs up like always MR. J

Hoping that you use the shrink tubing on the connections AFTER soldering them.....
@@dalewalker4614 kinda of a no brainer. Lol
@@RaginEagle One would think... but with the verbiage you used, it's unclear. The term no-brainer is a misnomer anyway. Thanks for your time to reply Larry.
@@dalewalker4614 I worded it that way because he wrapped black tape around it. Heat shrink would replace the tape. Nothing else would have been changed.
@@RaginEagle At 4:45 he shows the new wiring harness adapter nicely soldered and shrink wrapped up, so I’m assuming you are speaking of the original wiring harness where he unsoldered the “Tee” connections shown @ 3:37?
It appears the Tees were soldered into the harness and then wire-nutted to wires that ran out from there. He shows himself with the soldering iron in the cavity but doesn’t tell us whether he simply unsoldered the Tees and taped the gaps, or if he cut the Tees out and slipped shrink wrap over the newly stripped & soldered joints (unlikely). At 4:45 we see some electrical tape bundling the wires together, but he did not reveal how he handled insulating the wires where the Tees used to be. I suspect that you are right however - that he unsoldered the Tees and wrapped the uncut wiring with electrical tape.
Sorry for my attention to detail, but I used to be a professional troubleshooter and it’s surprising what “obvious” steps people shortcut or don’t do at all….. i.e. “Have you checked to see that your computer is plugged into the power outlet, and that the outlet is receiving electricity from the breaker box”? Haha. Yep. Can't believe I did that. I'm so careful too!!
If you want to update your stereo for cheap...just go to Walmart and get a cassette aux adapter to play music. For a suburban in such great condition with so little miles, why would the ac delco stereo be so bad...no FM, EQ not functioning etc? Haven't seen a removable face on a stereo since the early 90s.... Do they still come with a carrying case?

Awesome video Jimmy. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the Great Work. Your Da Man !
Two years later, did you finally get the amps and subwoofers? 🔊
Yup I need to take the aftermarket double DIN unit (Pioneer touch screen, some previous owner spent some money) out of my 06 Silverado (reg cab short bed) because only the drivers rear and passenger front speakers are working. I plan to run new speaker wires to all 4 since who knows what else has been tampered with along the way. I am hoping it is just wiring and not blown channels in the radio itself.
I'm assuming you soldered your wires together before slipping the shrink tubing over them. Wish I had $10 for every time I did that.
Attention all novices, you NEVER use wire nuts on an automobile, emphasis on NEVER. Just don't do it.
I just went through this with my 03 ZR2. It had a Bose stereo system and it worked fine but developed a voltage draw when off that drained my battery. I wanted the BT option, and plug in for my Ipod also. Nifty.
My Pioneer stereo came with that bt mic too but I don't own a cell phone so I didn't install it. One less thing to worry about :) I also soldered my new harness together with good old fashioned leaded solder. The factory unit in my little Ranger sounded fine, but it was just a radio. No cassette or cd player. Now I can play cd's or plug in my mp3 player or even use a bt mp3 player if I ever get one of those...can even plug in a memory stick as it has a usb on the front. What I don't understand is why they felt a need to supply the radio with a remote control, LOL! I mean, the main controls are within easy reach right there on the dash. It also came with a set of earbuds, which I guess is okay say, if your passenger wants to listen to something you have no desire to hear.
I'd get yourself some RCA's and run those while you're back there... because... you're going to want to add an amp later (once you're hooked you're hooked! Go for the RF P600 4 channel and you'll be blown away for mids/highs dedicated amp; but be sure to run a separate amp for subs if you do get to that point).
Excellent video James. I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Of course I always say that when I watch your videos.
Awesome video! Your wife needs to be in more videos Jimmy. ✌🏽
You could have made the effort to run the mic's wire behind the cluster 😉
That's how I did mine, super simple. Didn't like the visor idea at all.

real old school with the face plate removable
Major lesson: always ALWAYS test for proper operation BEFORE final install of head unit .😳
My 1997 Chevrolet Silverado c1500 that my teacher gave me has an aftermarket radio and a stock audio system the speakers scratch and they are blown
That radio is already a dinosaur
Maybe if I get a early 1991-95 Dodge Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country, maybe I’ll think about getting this Sony Head Unit as well, along with a bracket for it to fit in.
Feel like i'm being yelled at the whole video. Great info however
Jimmy you are a blessed man! 👨
Loll I cought that, poor controller.
Great videos BTW.
Well... What should I do if a modern, non-replaceable car radio sucks (like a renault megane 2016 or a volkswagen golf 7 one)?
Nice video. OMG, last thing I need or want to hear my girlfriend in the vehicle when she's not there.
With new speakers and Dolby in that radio. Should of sounded great on cassettes. Unless you were playing a cassette that has been played a million times. My 2006 mustangs cassette player is clear as day. I make mixtapes all the time. And I bought a amplified subwoofer that plugs into factory rear speakers and it gave my cassettes that boom! 😁
The reason why the auto makers do not install good quality stereos is the fact that we could NOT afford to buy the vehicle for what they would charge us extra for the stereo ! So we get JUNK !
I'm not sure about that because if you are willing to pay a shed load of cash for a brand new car an extra few hundred on a quality head unit won't affect you. Manufacturers of mass market cars are all about profit margins so they go cheap where they can. Some high end cars are different though and have expensive stereos and full leather interiors etc..
Peace
My stock factory radio is great! It's an "audio system" with 12 (could be 13, the center speaker) speakers, not just a radio though. LOL And yes, i have factory electric fan as well --i saw your electric fan video. LOL I enjoy your videos, totally DIY style!!
