- Why do we love stories with portals that lead to magical worlds?
In this episode I share my exploration on why portal fantasy (also commonly called isekai) hook us so. A journey that started in fantasy literature, worldbuilding and literary theory, but ended up in game design theory, with the MDA framework.

I rarely anylize stories to that degree, don't like to. But I can agree with some of your points. What I am after is a well-told tale. Even if the apparent genre is't what I would usually look for
I gotta say that applying game design theory to books is genuinely interesting, I feel like it is a really strong lense to apply!

Me deparei com seu canal pois estive consumindo bastante conteúdo do gênero para me dar pontos do que fazer e não fazer do meu dark fantasy naval, e coisas como o seu ajudam a níveis astronômicos!
Ando trabalhando nessa história já fazem uns três anos, no caminho pra se tornar uma série autoral- foram dois de puro trabalho duro pra ter um rascunho inicial com o mundo preparado, mas com paixão chegamos lá, não?
Tento inovar, e criar um sistema novo a partir de poções extraídas de rochas onde o corpo governante tem um monopólio e pessoas cedem a pirataria devido a pobreza e exploração, mas ter temas filosóficos na mistura é algo muito bom; e amo pessoas que pensam como eu.

Really loved the video! I find that my favourite media makes me feel a mixture of Sensation, Discovery, Fantasy and most importantly Abnegation. Like I am a powerful wizard that can take revenge on those who wronged her through extreme magic methods yes... but I am also a fantasy reader and can predict what is going to happen to a certain degree... even though the narrative is still engaging and the discovery aspect of the world and it's rules is very powerful, this sense of security even in a unfamiliar environment is what makes me come back to a book and call it a favourite (I don't usually like rereading books). I like books where I can understand, not only how the world functions but also the characters Psyche. I suppose that the real world doesn't really do that for me, so I actually find refuge and logic (as strange as it may sound) in Fantasy.

Also, finally someone says that fantasy gives way to abnegation, and not escapism. Never managed to put it init a word myself, despite having to defend my liking for video games countless times.
Approaching from the angle of game design is an interesting one! Its always fascinating to see how different medias and mediums can learn from each other

I do like your approach to writing from a key emotion perspective. though I don’t think it needs to replace genre, awareness of it should definitely influence how we write and craft story. I know your work here has helped me understand a new facet of the craft. Hopefully that will come across in my work someday.

Also, I've always felt like Star Wars was a little bit more fantasy-like than other sci-fi stories, but I couldn't put my finger on why until now, so thank you!

Awnsering the last question there: Yes! I love game design, and seeing it used as a tool for general storytelling is so interesting.

Here is a suggestion (not sure if too soon for it to work), but what about a video exploring "Over the Graden Wall"? It fits right in with the season and Halloween feel, and seem like something up to your speed.
This is an interesting video. The fantasy story I'm currently written has some "portal fantasy" elements. Mainly, the fantasy world connects to Earth via a portal. My main character is sent to the fantasy realm to attend an academy where she'll learn magic. Unlike Harry, there's no "yer a wizard" type reveal. My MC knows about magic, but living on Earth is different from living in the fantasy realm. A big reason I set my story in a fantasy realm was to distinguish my idea from Harry Potter.
I do have to say that the portals have been one of the hardest parts of my worldbuilding to develop. They need to be balanced so they don't become OP like other fantasy portals (Marvel).
Finally had the time to watch this one, lovely video as always! You always make my emotions bloom with your analysis! I'm specially fond of the game design bits, I was never that much of a gamer, but I always enjoyed them as a tool for storytelling, so seeing you tie both concepts together was very satisfying! 💜
