    What a fabulous video tour. Brought back so many memories of BR(S) and London Underground. I loved the interior shots and also the sounds of the traction motors and wheel flange squeal. And the station announcements. I loved every minute of this video, thank you for sharing your excellent footage. Pure gold.👍

    When Trains sounded like trains forgot how noisy they were but at least they had character.. And the old voice announcements those were the days. Everything much more simple and straight forward.

    Love the sounds of the old trains, all the squeaking, clanging and the distinctive slam door engine noise. Went on a new Thameslink train the other day. Impressive, but not as atmospheric.

      me too...I miss trains s o much, and the prospect of screened robo shuttles being introduced as our 3rd metro system by late-December, it must altogether be pottily corporate and thus utterly underwhelming...!

    I remember going from Fenchurch Street to Pitsea in the early 2000's on one of those old 'slam-door' trains. Went via Grays and Tilbury Docks and was on a dark November evening. Was pretty unnerving; hurtling along that line at speed and not being able to see a thing out of the windows for long stretches!!

    I used to love riding the slam doors on the old Charing Cross-Woolwich-Gillingham semi fasts,

    Used to live in Kent until the last days of the slammers. Got many happy memories as a teen early twentys seeing them in thier last years until i moved up north in 02. Wish they were still around the new trains dont even come close to the comfort of them.

    Great video. Thanks for posting. I've got a lot of fond memories of that station, being taken there as a kid to "trainspot" by my grandad, getting off there numerous times to watch Millwall, and finally working there when many times when I was on BR prior to privatisation. Love all the southern units of that era. Great stuff thanks again :-)

    Having lived on the Sidcup Loop Line since 1980 and having commuted from there firstly to the West End and latterly the City, the first part of this video was my "daily Commute", so it brought back vivid memories! Thank You!

    Yes the sound of the DC traction motors is something I miss with newer trains, both here in Canada and in England.

    All so familiar. Lived in SE since the 60's and commuted to school and later work not to mention trips to the seaside on these trains so remember them well.
    Notice how better dressed everybody was and not a mobile phone in sight!

    Great film, I remember when I thought a CEP ( the train he gets on board at 8:30) was really new and modern!!! Love the slam doors including the EPBs that I rode on mostly, nothing was as comfy as those big old seats.

    • @geoffbarry9540
      @geoffbarry9540 8 лет назад

      +simonmd2000 When I rode the initial CEPs they were new and modern but the PULs, PANs and even the LAVs they replaced were more comfortable...but ooh, the CEPs were so sophisticated back then. Modern reviewers - and many at the time - have bemoaned them as just Mk1s with holes cut in the ends. You have to be young enough to absorb such change without criticism I think, but the bottom line for the young is always going to be the attraction of the new...which is as it should be, or how are they going to be encouraged to effect change.

      God god your old! Just kidding- I wish i could remember the CEP's better myself. They were all withdrawn by the time i was 6. Good memories though :)

    Boy was I upset when I saw you had removed the original version, which I had kept in my favourites for years ! This new longer version is even better, it brings back so many happy memories, especially the CEP going over the Thames into Charing Cross. Thanks for sharing your excellent footage of the wonderful slam door trains !

    there is one EPB (5759) left in passenger service repainted into Southern Green and can be found on the East Kent Railway at Shepherdswell. there's also a 4CEP/BEP in SWT livery and 4 MLV's one of which (68001) runs with batteries, worth a visit.

    New Cross station used to be served by trains to both Charing Cross and Cannon Street using the Class 415/416 EPBs and the newer Class 465/466 Networkers that time in the 1990s but nowadays since 2015 New Cross station is only served by trains going to Cannon Street only using a mixture of the Class 465/466 Networkers, Class 376 Suburban Electrostars and the Class 707 Desiro Cities
