  • Another speed raw Monday and today I'm talking about my experiences drawing and promoting a web comic. It's been several years since I did it on a weekly basis but when I was working on it I learned a lot. Here are a couple things I picked up along the way.
If you would like to read some of my old comics you can see them here:

If you wonder what I use to create my art or videos check out my gear:

You remind me of Mark Crilley when I found him ages ago. Your work is professional; and I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Your final point is probably the best one on there. It’s always best to make and publish webcomics because it’s something you enjoy doing. If you just do it to get popular, then you’re only leading yourself to disappointment. But if you primarily care about doing it for fun, then you’ll put more effort and thought into it which ups the quality and your motivation to keep going. Then when others see your comic, they’ll be able to see the fun and passion you put into it which will overall make it better.

You gave some solid advice in here. Thank you, Brad. If I have a tip to add in your list? Since you asked, here we go. I'd add a hint: "never open a barbecue shop in a Vegan street" or "stay in your lane". It means, look out the genre and art style. Taking manga/cartoon/teen oriented style as example, a creator for mature readers (more like Vertigo - art and writing) have a hard time doing well in an online comic host like Webtoon,Tapas or Smackjeeves. I saw very good western comics with a fixed schedule doing poorly in those hosts. And we have an inverted thing for print comics. Don't try to push a manga style for a serious publisher. Usually, their answer is "no (f******g way)". XD

The consistency thing is 300% true. I make and sell stuff in Second Life and I've noticed that I get more visitors and more sell when I put out new stuff. If I go a month or so without adding new products, sales slow down.

Yeah, totally. When I stopped doing the comic on a weekly basis by traffic started to really fall. Once you kinda step off your production people lose interest.

So went back in time here, found this little gem. I was following a lot of the tips with out even knowing it. Now here I am after 25 weeks of Peapods rocking a fan base of like 20!!! Woot Woot That might be an exaggeration, but it still feels good to connect with people through this. A good portion of my “fans” (that sounds weird) are outside of the country.

amazing advice, I'm currently just setting up my first web comic over on gumroad, but I'm just setting up all the behind the scenes stuff at the moment, the routine, the writing etc, Issue 1 is ready to go I'm just getting everything else ready first, fully aware no one will see it though, but this video has given me a couple of ideas of where to go and post about it..nice one dude :)

If we're strictly talking about promotion, then a good way would be to collect a mash-up of your work, if you re doing a series, maybe a volumes worth of material? Or prints?
And become a vendor at some sorta convention. Like comiccon. Where I live Anime revolution you can be a vendor for $525.
You will be spending loads of money at the start, so I suggest you save up a great deal before you take this venture, then try to expose yourself. Sell your stuff and put links to you social media that is relevant to your material.
It will be a thing you will constantly have to do while juggling your regular schedule.

Makoto Kazuki that seems to be what a lot of well known artists online have in common tbh. I have yet to try it because of the money issue but it really does seem to work wonders for the smaller artists I know who have sold at cons.

yeah i got u guys but still iam so confused about how to actually promote myself without any hold on social media. I recently started my web comic bit the thing is its neither romance nor in the typical manga style. i tried to develop my own style and instead of choosing a colorful pallette I picked grayscale palette. Now I fear is this a wrong decision. Nyone please help me out! Its called the ordinary saga its on line webtoon

Man, I could have used better promotion. Eighteen years of Zebra Girl, and it always struggled to find a really large audience. That was always an Achilles' heel of mine.
