@Fujimoto420 i may be wrong, but i dimly remember reading somewhere that its especially made for them, but cant help u with who though. Try some of their other vids, i think its used more than just for this. sorry cant help more.
Brilliant,beautiful,perfect,rational,infinite.(I can't decide if I'm talking about the Universe or the research staff.)You scientists,along with astronauts who not only have the courage to risk their lives in outer space,but also have the intelligence to repair space craft when they get there are my heroes. You are the future of our species.I get sick of watching some millionaire athlete looking up to the sky thanking a deity for not letting anyone tackle him when catching a touchdown pass.
@MrBegetter : There is no 'Distro" that is ported from HP-UX. If you mean an application ported from HP-UX to Linux then... perhaps yes... but this is not evident from the screens...
@ikt123 : What is clearly visible, is that the 'windowing system' and the 'toolkit' used are Motif based. Most probably CDE or Common Desktop Environment, since the windows use the CDE/Motif decorations. From this, its completely uncertain which OS is used. It can be any of the most used *NIX OSes or a version BSD or even Linux ..... What is certain, its using X and Motif. (so its not MS Winders)
@derangius exactly!! lmao thats what i mean. i wasnt expecting a video on how a bunch of people get by in a desert facility, i subscribed to bestofscience for a certain something lol
@inademv - Aye. The Very Fast Train (aka VFT) is another example of such. I think it'd be interesting to scan the brain of those who come up with these names and see just how large the area of the brain dealing with linguistics is (assuming it's not entirely missing)
can anyone tell me what the red/orange laser like light is, that points up? is it really visible like that, or just added in after? Whats it used for, or better, how and why? thanks.
@bwzes03 : Actually, on second view, its not even clear that its CDE, it could be FVWM in Motif mode. ... since the decorations are slightly smaller than 'true CDE Motif decorations'.
Anyone think Fernando looks like Desmond from Lost. If you don't know who i'm talking about, Desmond was the character whose only line was "I love you Penny" for 4 straight years
@ikt123 with high probability this is a linux or unix or bsd based operating system... it is not quite visible which desktop environment is beeing used there... my personal bet is a special made linux distribution... any other bets or even conclusive hints and links?
@jeebersjumpincryst It's a real laser. It creates a point of light in the sky, and that point is used to adjust the images to eliminate distortions in the atmosphere. Google "laser guide star".
@inademv Currently being planned is the Extremely Large Telescope, and there's a project for an Overwhelmengly Large Telescope. I'm not kidding, Google those names ;-)
@94ruski You're speaking from an individual standpoint, I was thinking more in general. Your kind of christian isn't a conventional one, or maybe it just appears that way because they are rarely represented that way. Most scientists aren't religious so it's not entirely wrong to conclude that science is less attractive to the 'spiritual' population.
@inademv just like European's still planned "Extremely Large Telescope"... which is (obviously) larger than the VLT :) I wonder how they will call even bigger telescopes...
@insanewarlock666 Being a scientist in a time when most people shun it. Like today. Must be boring in the future when the tables have turned on bronze-age dogma.
@94ruski Well, whoever\whatever that tries to repress science or tell humans what to believe and how to act in any form is my enemy. Naturally, organized religion became an enemy as it does both, especially in islamic countries and the US. Faith I have no quarrel with, if you thought I had. You can be christian and still be the most awesome guy I know, but once you turn into a 'soldier' for the organized religion and try to impose religious laws on society and me, that's when I turn hostile.
@RuudschMaHinda
My bet is that it's a special distro for academia - there's tons of those on "distrowatch" if you search , which one , hard to say.
Can I visit Paranal? That would be the ultimate cool vacation.
@Fujimoto420 i may be wrong, but i dimly remember reading somewhere that its especially made for them, but cant help u with who though. Try some of their other vids, i think its used more than just for this. sorry cant help more.
@maksphoto78 Hi - just wanted to say a big thanks for you comment re: "laser guide star" and the search(google) pointer. Really appreciate it. :)
Luv the time-lapse shots throughout the vid. Nice.

Dr J's adam's apple bobbing up and down was the most interesting part of this video.

how many official languages does the ESO's Paranal Observatory have and what are they? just curious
@inademv
I've always wondered if they make a bigger telescope, will they name it: "Even Larger Telescope"?
Imagine the pictures we'll get once JWST is operational. Only three more years to go.
In the extended version you get a glimpse of naked Fridays.
Those scientists and engineers are actually bad ass athletes

By the way, the presenters have interesting accent, where are they from?

I've been watching your great video
3:11 to 3:14 = eyegasm... :)
3:45 why is there a wii connected to his telescope?
The Very Large Telescope hosts a Very Small Entertainment Room.
@jeebersjumpincryst It creates a "fake star" that is used to align the telesopes.
nice
Chile is so beautiful.
@94ruski

@3:40 Telescope size FAIL.
@inademv Hey its very large.
@inademv just like European's still planned "Extremely Large Telescope"... which is (obviously) larger than the VLT :) I wonder how they will call even bigger telescopes...
3:09- DEATH LAZAH!!
@0815tobey Looks like fun to me.
I'd love to end up in such a prison.

Um.....was that a sexy astrophysisist I saw at 8:21? Now that's hot.
@Ivin3690 Was it really necessary for you to make that comment?
was this documentary really necessary?
@insanewarlock666

Fuckin' magnets, how do they work?
@Epitzsche lol funny. but u know im right, that video is not about science. i think they wasted a little bit money makin that.
@SpeedFreakNO lol ok i guess everyone like the video except me. there was nothing scientific abt it in my opinion, thats all
Hire me!
*troll on* ... down blow this comment....
