    I can't bunny hop, but I can boost jumps! It's all about pumping with all your might into the takeoff. The longer the jump, and the slower the takeoff, the harder you have to pump into it. The "pulling up" of the bars is a side effect of that, and I don't think I'd describe it that way, it's actually the opposite of what you want to do going into a big jump. Once you pump into a jump properly, you don't need to worry about being pitched forward. In fact, pumping into a jump settles you in the air and prevents being pitched forward. If anything, you can loop out by mistake if you go too hard and are too enthusiastic about it. This is also how you conquer steep takeoffs that like to pitch you over the bars.

    Thats why I like riding jumps with flats, because if I ride with clips I tend to “cheat” and pull up with my pedals.

  • @Flyers2929
    @Flyers2929 5 лет назад +93

    I would suggest first perfecting a bunny hop on flat ground with good form then hitting a jump with really low speed and trying to get as high as possible. I mean on the jump going only a few feet. Once you feel comfortable with really slow speed stuff you can practice on a full jump like that

    • @TheLoamRanger
      @TheLoamRanger  5 лет назад +16

      That's exactly it, right there. My American-style bunny hops sucked to begin with going into this, so first getting that down would be critical when trying to bring that skill over to a high-speed, high-consequence environment. Start small and build from there! I have my homework for the week :D Cheers man!

    • @paulheger136
      @paulheger136 5 лет назад

      "My American-style bunny hops sucked to begin with going into this,". I'm with you on this. The sensation of the bars being so high in the air, then pulling my hips to the bars(what i call "climbing the ladder") is challenging. I have the same homework!🤟

    • @Wizler71
      @Wizler71 5 лет назад +3

      I can bunny hop little things pretty well. And I can boost small/medium jumps at slow speed and still clear them. But on big jumps that pop hard I get scared and "forget" to use good technique so I just look silly (and case of course). So yeah, the fear of consequence is real.

    • @Flyers2929
      @Flyers2929 5 лет назад

      @@Wizler71 True! But just keep practicing those small and medium jumps and the big ones will come. Ive been practicing the same medium jumps for a while now and went back to a place with bigger jumps. I previously felt uncomfortable and cased some of the jumps and now I clear them no problem and even threw in style. It is all about technique and comfort

    Good stuff! Great tips for pulling up on the bars, definitely not in my wheel house of mastery, but I can be more aware about it. I have a buddy that pulls up on the bars really hard and holds it there until right before the landing where he grabs his rear brake (in the air) which drops the fork into the perfect landing.

    I also found pushing the front fork in the jump not just the rear shock with your feet will help you go higher - pop the jump. No need to push your weight back like a bunny hop as the jump will transfer or push your weight back as you jump so you can focus and emphasize on standing up to the jump 😊

    The Loam Ranger-just ran across your videos. I am an avid cross country racer switching to enduro after 8 years of competition. My strong suite has always been downhill and flats, I am not a "natural" climber. At 6'4" and 210 I have a lot of weight to tug up hill lol. I have always considered myself a more natural downhill dude, and just bought a Santa Cruz Hightower C Carbon. Sweet bike. However. I am learning to ride this bike as it is completely different animal from my cross country hardtail. Any advice you can give a cc rider transitioning to enduro would be awesome. I did my first enduro this last summer on my Specialized Epic, came in 19th out of 39 riders in beginners division, but that bike was not made for enduro...lol. I am 48, however, in pretty good physical shape from racing the last 8 years. Thanks and keep the videos coming !

    Pause right at the lip of take off and compare to Jordan. You tend to be very hunched over so the shock is catapulting you forward, whereas if you pause Jordan at the lip, he's standing straight up causing vertical force

  • @hobmarg
    @hobmarg 5 лет назад

    IMO the best way to learn to pull up like Jordan is talking about is on a step up because you are not afraid of going fast and just pulling as not much can go wrong. The one on Dirt Merch (Old not the new 2018 one) is a good one, or the small step up off the green trail after DM back onto the ski slope. Push into the lip/preload and then stand up and pull hard.
    Step up island in Garbo works but it’s a bit intimidating because you are hauling ass

  • @bullseye0112
    @bullseye0112 5 лет назад

    Also, if you adjust your rebound, just slow the rear shock down a couple clicks, and you won't get nose heavy. I did that when I was nose heavy, and it was a game changer

    pump in...pull off... wait and let the back tire come off at the same spot as the front tire. You can see the boostmaster do this instinctually in the video. Usually we pull our back end too early. Practice by doing American bunny hops. Draw a line. Record yourself and try to get yourself to wait and not pull the back end until it comes to the line. Front end and back end need both leave the ground at the line. Start by going a little faster (faster is easier). Then progress by slowing down and trying to accomplish the same timing.

    You can't ''panic rev'' a mountain bike I'm pretty sure, but if you pull two hard at the tip of the jump and wind up looking at the sky can you back brake to bring the front tier down, I have not tried that yet???? On a bicycle......

  • @andrewarnold9874
    @andrewarnold9874 5 лет назад

    Hit Crank it up/Crank it up More over n over n over... think about ollie'ing a skateboard/snowboard for context. You load up the weight on the front of the board before you snap your tail... same thing with a bike... pre-load front forks before the lip, pop em as you take off. Transfer weight from your front end to your pedals also right before take off. Pull the bike up and toward you while in the air, and extend it out to 'round out' the transition. Helps to ride the WBP with a DH bike when learning to jump too, just in case you case the landings, there's just so much more forgiveness than a trail bike with shorter travel.

    Compress is going to happen when you’re going into the jump you can press down a little bit more just before you going to jump just before and then pull up just enough to get your front wheel off the Ground then level out your bike and you will glide down trusting you wheel is going to follow you up into the air when you leap into the air

  • @hopnglo680
    @hopnglo680 3 года назад

    Everyone who cased it did the same thing. Their legs are not extended. They are scared of the jump and not letting the rear wheel ride all the way up the lip and push off with the legs. You are doing a slow and large bunny hop when you jump properly. So drive you knees into the jump face and lower your chest towards the stem. As the jump approaches raise your chest and pull back on the bars with light to medium effort. Now push off with your legs as you crest the lip. The bars come to your waist because your feet are pushing off. This isn’t going to happen overnight. Try to boost small jumps first. It’s important to not be scared and let the bike roll without you being all tense and holding it back.

    I found the best way is to get comfortable bunny hopping. Attempt a jump you have done before but apply a small amount of brakes. This makes your speed slower and requires more pumping and bunny hoping to clear the jump. Then apply the same method without braking, this helps progress with speed. By all means I am not an expert, still case the 36 ft table on Dirt Merchant and a few others. This mostly just has to do with not pumping and bunny hoping the jump.

    Had no clue that there was American b hops...
    A cheap way to learn some of these skills is to buy yourself a used bmx, and hit a local pump track and skatepark..
    1. You don't destroy your expensive mountain bike rig
    2. No suspension involved and you can focus on the mechanics
    3. It's a ton of fun and usually a quicker way to get a session in without the hassle of a lift service (plus usually you can go out at night after the kiddos are in bed).
    I can't do allot of things on my enduro that I can on my BMX. It's easier to learn to b-hop, manual, ride smoothly, pump, and in general be faster at responding/adjusting since there isn't suspension involved.
    I'd suggest a DJ bike as well if you got the extra money

    Hey man, a little tip. You can get much more out of your jump even without boosting it. You're not really compressing into the lip.
    Play the video at very low speed and pause the video just when you get into the view of the camera. You're not compressed. Either you stop compressing too early, or you just don't compress. Look at Jordan, when he comes into view, his body is much lower down, more compressed.

    My advice would be to smash your bottom bracket into the jump, then pop off with a large bunny hop

    I’m almost sure you are riding clipped in - I used to have the same problem. When clipped in, it is very tempting to pull up with your feet to get the bike up. This is bad form for a bunny hop - it is better to switch to flat pedals for a while and get better form. I did this and never went back to my old pedals. I stuck with flat pedals which also made me more confident doing other tricks since it is easier to bail if things go wrong.

    Since when did we start categorizing bunnyhops? the American bunnyhop. LOL silly

    To bunny-hop you want to use the front fork like a pogo stick, not pull-up on the bars too much.

    yeah so what will really help you is learning a proper manual an how to lift it up , because when you lift the front wheel for a manual is the same as starting an american bunny hop and never pull with your arms but rather with your hips and legs yt tutorials are key 👌🤘

    I am right to say that when you end up nose heavy, it is because you stop pushing with your feet before the end of the lip, your back tire then gets kicked from the lip.

    Something that Jordan is trying to explain is that, he’s actually preloading the back end of the bike. He tries to say keep your feet down and pull up on the bars for the bunny hop. But, there is actually an easier and safer way to “boost” the jump. The rider who cleared the jump after the person rolled the jump 5:49 had a much more controlled jump, was constantly level, and had less speed than Jordan, and he still cleared it. The reason why is because he preloaded both his front and rear suspension. This is done by pushing down on the bars and pedals right before the takeoff then releasing it at the lip, which pushes you higher and further. It’s an old motocross trick that everyone who rides tracks uses. RUclips “motocross preloading.” If you do this, then you don’t have to pull up so much on the bars and cause your back end to follow it. I could even argue that Jordan is only clearing it because he’s preloading the back end, and the pulling up of the front end has much less of an affect of clearing it but of just giving himself more height

      I can agree with that! We just put out a “How To Jump” video with a professional bike coach and he says it’s all about even compression as well. Different strokes!

      Just watched it! That was a great video and a great coach. I really like watching Jordan’s videos, but it’s important to learn why and how to do something than just learning on the fly. Learning technique is the best way to clean up your riding.
      However, I might be bias because I’m a helicopter pilot instructor...

    Im no expert but with a rear suspension its going to compress into the lip then uncompress. If you just let it do its thing it will throw you off balance. If you take control and deliberately compress it you have more control on when and how it uncompresses. If you're in-control of the pop you can send your body momentum up instead of forward and otb. You push you body up and away from the rear end just enough to pop away from the bike a bit without losing foot contact. Then the rear will uncompress and come up towards you where you absorb it by bending your knees(this is the part that looks like pulling or scooping the rear up with your feet). Should you pop up off the bike and fail to bend your legs to absorb the rear, it will kick you forward. Or if you fail to unweighted the front or pop the front off the lip that will make you fall forward.

    Pause it at 5:49, I believe that is perfect form. Unfortunately I'm like the guy right behind him, decent approach, but don't stand up and stay low on my bike.
