How We Plant Many of Our Early Tomatoes

- In this video we show how we, at Magicland Farms, which is located at 4380 S. Gordon, Fremont Michigan 49412, plant most of our early tomatoes, in plastic mulch using drip tape. In addition to tomatoes, we grow and sell, sweet corn, green and yellow beans, red and Yukon Gold potatoes, watermelon, muskmelon, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, peas, beets, onions, garlic, winter and summer squash, apples, peaches, plums, pears and pawpaws. Thank you so much for sharing how you grow the vegetables that you do. Its a hard job that deserves the utmost respect. You grow food, you feed people. I loved watching your video and learning how things are done on a large farm and the methods that are employed today in food production. My mother grew up on a farm and she would talk about all of the kids working to get rid of pests or if they had tobacco planted to succor the plants, Mom was born in 1930 so tobacco was a good cash crop for the smaller farmer. My family share cropped land in Indiana. When my Mother left home she came to California and she and my Dad always had a garden each year and my how she could grow things but I think that the tomatoes were the ever loving best. Thank you so much once again for sharing about your farm I loved your video I just wish we were in the same area so I could come and get my produce from you. I am trying to grow tomatoes this year so wish me luck.

I Built a Plastic applicator for my strawberry farm and welded Sharpened conduit pipe in a cross pattern on a 12 inch steel wheel. That gave me a 6 inch spacing. As i drove along it rolled and punched perfectly spaced holes in the plastic. you could probably make one on a larger scale like a bicycle wheel to punch wider spacing for tomato plants or anything.

I too wonder how you miss the drop tape, also I would put a TBSP. of Epsom salts in each hole, and throw the torn off peat bottom in the hole, to help hold water.

One method (I use ) is heavy pruning and allowing only 2 or 3 vines that wrap around a central post. It's a sort of forced energy to the remaining plant. This way they can be tall and close.

Aqua-TRAXX 8mil 1 foot spacing emitters we do not bury them we lay on ground with plastic on top

Do you guys do anything to prevent weeds from coming up through the holes?
In most instances, hand weeding is what we do to take care of the weeds that come through the hole around the plant.
With the recent technologies changing when it comes to mulching, firstly there's the colour change...
If you are in the Northern America where the frost appears, you can get away with black and be merry, your yield won't increase and your costs won't either.
White if you are south of the frost line, it keeps things cooler, about 5f cooler... However not all technology is B&W there's a whole range of colours, for example the tomatoes and eggplants love red ones, they find the yield is increased and mulch is kept at bay.
So, spend 3 hours of research on mulch and call the suppliers, 3 suppliers on their different products, and don't settle for the cheapest...
If you want the cheapest solution, you can always mulch up your old plants and use them next year... but you know that won't be very good for your farm

Great video Thanks, My dream is to retire in the next few years and become a full time farmer. I only have 8 farmable acres and have already purchased a mulch layer and transplanter. I guess my question is can you make it on about 5 acres of tomatoes every year. My goal is to sell all of them to wholesaler so I will get a lower price than if I did a upick or something. I need to profit 35k per year to make ends meet. Please give me some advice if you can and how many acres do you farm. Thank you again.

I would only say I wish I had a couple or three of those young ladies in the blue shirts helping me ( she is a great worker) . Also is the drip tape often cut by the post hole digger?

I use a rain-flo plastic layer and water wheel trans-planter. I also have a Ferris polyplanter which plants seeds right through the plastic. I use a Zimmerman plastic lifter/wrapper.
This equipment is expensive and so is the plastic, drip tape, and soluble fertilizer. What else can you do if you don't want to use all those herbicides?
Get yourself a water wheel trans-planter and get rid of that post hole digger. Add a little fertilizer to the water tank and if it does not rain for days the plants will survive. The added water causes good soil to root contact. Leaving dirt on the plastic from the post hole digger causes weeds to grow there.

Many thanks for posting. One question though. Why do you put the drip irrigation below the mulch? Farmers normally let this rest on top of the mulch liner.

Seems like the drip tape and plastic cost alot and you have to figure that into the total
cost and maybe have to up the price of your tomatoes or make less.
Where do you get did of the plastic and cost of that since they don't let you burn it like the
old timers use to.
I finally understood but the sound was so bad and the video so confusing and unedited it took a while. This is exactly how "corporate"crops are grown in Costa Rica. You see whole hillsides of black with thousands of orange or green dots ever few feet. We were told it was extremely efficient and was good for the ground since it involved little tilling.
