I think those boring and repetitive projects are why people don't get better or just give up. It's much nicer to have tiny finished projects that can actually show your improved skill while you quickly move on. Looking back at a blanket with tons of mistakes early on is depressing.
I remember Elyse Meyers say that it was better to start off by stuffed animals when doing crochet for the first time. I kinda agree because almost each row is different, and you finish quickly and you have a cute animal to either keep or give

Chonky cat is so absolutely flip-flopping adorable! And those dinos! I never mastered the art of amigurumi. You took to it like a fish to water. I do crochet, mostly scarves, shawls and blankets. One of the pieces I’m most proud of is a shawl/scarf with a skull pattern I picked off RUclips. My daughter loves it and wears it throughout winter. Hence me being so proud of it! Keep crocheting, you’ve obviously got talent for it and it clearly brings you joy. That’s what it should be about.
Aww. My mum knitted me a beret when I was a teenager in the eighties. I loved that beret and wore it every winter. A couple of years ago, I lost it. Every winter, I feel a bit sad and hope that it'll miraculously turn up again.

Basically everywhere but the USA and England have better crochet patterns that don’t write out the short hand but use diagrams. This or being able to watch RUclips tutorials takes away one of the biggest roadblocks to learning. If I had to guess this probably helped a lot in picking it up so fast.
