For some reasons some foreign media are trivializing the reasons behind the anger and frustration of Koreans in this election. Among the issus that have made many Koreans concerned is the rapid deterioration of democracy since this president took office 2 years ago. The abuse of power is a real threat to the health of the nation many Koreans are feeling these days.
The reporter doesn't explain the circumstance why receiving expensive gift is such a big scandal. Kim, being the wife of high office prosecutor for more than 10 years and shall know well receiving any gifts over $300 will get her and her husband in trouble. Not to mention being the President's wife. Many government officials got in trouble over these gifts and they lost their positions. So, it is a big deal. What really infuriated Korean public was that Yoon got himself elected in the position with the slogan "fairness and common sense" and by portraying himself as a man of strict moral. But, he wielded his power on his political adversaries to the utmost disgusting ways. Such as if he couldn't find any dirt on his enemy, he will pursue wife, then children, or the related family using his prosecutor influence. For example, for Mr. Cho of opposition parties, when Yoon couldn't find any crime on Mr. Cho, he went after Cho's wife. She was thrown in jail for 4 years over forging a certificate of volunteer work commendation for her daughter. Whether she did that or not is still controversial. However, with that controversy over this certificate, Mr. Cho's daughter who graduated a medical school and passed the Medical board exam to be a MD got her diploma of Medical school and University nullified and still being on trial. Also, Yoon went after Mr. Cho's son and Mr. Cho's brother for ridiculous reasons. On the other hand, Kim, the first lady, was actively involved in stock price manipulation. All of her accomplices got tried and sentenced; however, she was not investigated even once even with many incriminating evidences are well known in public. Her family, mother and her brother was involved in several other crimes. They got either not charged or released with only small penalty. With abundant rumors of corruption surrounding Yoon and his family, accepting the expensive gift which is apparently illegal while in Presidential position and didn't even get investigated, it was enough to spark the flame. Koreans went through long time of dictatorships. We shed blood and tears fighting the rules of dictators. Yoon wielding his political power with his fellow prosecutors under his wings brings back memory of that. Media turning into government propaganda machine, erosion into freedom and democratic ways. Yoon tries to turn back our time. That's why we are angry.
I thought South Korea is a "Democracy"??? If Yoon Suk Yeol can go after his oppositions/and their families with such vindictiveness, why can't the "people" of the country similarly go after Yoon's wife for all her dirty dealings???
