One tip. Only put the drain plug on the bottom if you're sure that you'll never drag the pan over a speed bump or rock. If you do it will rip that pan right open. Putting the drain on the side is plenty good since you don't need to get out every last drop as the pan has to come off anyway to change the filter.

That’s exactly what I was thinking as well. Ripping that plug out by high centering on an item in the road way. Put it on the side of the pan as low as possible. Maybe the rear of able.
the nice thing is this pan was way up above the frame...:)
Some vehicles, i'm look at you Volvo and VW just to name a few, put the oil pans level or below the frame or subframe. Your mileage will very.
Yes it does take some common sense when doing this process there’s no doubt about that
Ppl don’t realize that’s a gm trans pan like a truck or suv I highly doubt where the plug is that he is going to scrap or knock it off now a car more likely but not a truck or suv this is a flawless presentation

Thank you. Great short tutorial. To the point, which is great. One tip from a Toxicologist (studies how chemicals hurt the body), if I may. Please never let anything touch your skin that you are not prepared to eat. Why? Chemicals pass through the skin much easier than one would ever imagine. That's how nicotine patches and other things work. The chemical passes right through the skin. The thing with solvents and sealants is that these are really nasty chemicals that get inside the body and stay. You risk cancer, nerve disorders and other ailments. Gloves, gloves, gloves. I hate gloves too and they make the job much harder. But what do you do? Your health comes first. Thanks to everyone for considering this information.

Skin is a pretty good protective barrier, it will block most things. Always good to be on the safe side but if you're constantly around something a quick bit of searching will tell you if what you commonly use will pass through or not. A lot of cosmetics women get is a scam for instance more than half that shit they say does something doesn't do anything but sit on the surface til washed away...
I always weld in a 1/2 inch grade 8 nut on the bottom of the pan and use a copper washer for sealing. Fine threads of course.

Nice video. I made a castle nut out of one I had laying around and welded it to the inside of my pan. The slots need to go against the pan. Using a castle nut in this way allows just about all fluid to drain out verses the drain pan kits sold in parts stores. But you gotta use what you can get your hands on I guess and those kits are better than nothing at all.

Another thought, If you have decided to add the drain plug, couldn't you go ahead and drill the pan (for the plot hole) while its still full of fluid right where the drain plug would be going? That way the current fluid change would not be messy either?

That's a great idea but what about the transmission filter . Or is this drain then drop pan to change filter method ?
thats why you want a plug to drain the fluid so you can change the fluid and filter without making a huge mess...

thanks Nick plus for those who worry about their cars way too much like me...lol we can change the fluid once before the filter needs replacement...or at least 5 to 7 quarts that are in the pan.
I like to take care of my vehicle and make them last also and I think I'm have to buy a spare tranny pan and install and drain plug and give it a try also .

Thank you. I don't do a lot of off-roading, but I'd hate to have that get knocked off while I am. It'd be a rare thing, but better safe than sorry. I think I'll put mine off the side of the pan in a direction where the oil shooting out won't hit anything on the way out. Probably facing the back of the vehicle.

Much easier to drill a hole in the rear corner of the pan and weld a nut on to take a bolt to the outside where it cannot get knocked off. You can also wire lock the nut in place with a second nut a little above it. Or just lower one side of the pan and let the oil out.
Right but most DIYers dont have a welder.. and the drain plug makes a lot less of a mess. thanks for your comments

If you do a lot of off-roading, I would put the plug on the back side of the sump instead, so it doesn't get caught.

Did you ever notice if your drain plug leaked / seeped around the o-ring ? Maybe better to use a copper washer instead ?

You did not show that you already drilled a pilot hole will make it harder for an amateur
Don't entirely need a pilot with these stepper bits as in my experience they cut much quicker and don't seem to move around as much as a normal drill bit. Does give a little more piece of mind that your hole will be the exact spot you wanted it though. I'd say common sense would tell said viewer that there IS a pilot hole there but we all know how uncommon sense really is.

as long as you're dropping the pan to put this in,why not just braze in a 1/4 to 1/8th pipe bushing and use an 1/8th Allen socket plug. Much more permanent and less likely to leak. That's what I did to my pickup

Christian One thing about Harbor freight their tools are extremely cheap pricewise but they just don’t last so it seems like you’re constantly buying them we are found here that if you just buy really good quality tools they will last you for years and years and years but I will say harbor freight does have a lot of the specialty tools that are easy to purchase by just walking in the store and getting it that day have a great night my friend Mike

Here's the reason why, they want to make sure that the filter gets changed as well as the fluid. But for those of us who are hard on their transmissions, we like to change our fluid more often when the filter doesn't necessarily need to be changed, plus the plug just makes it easier for doing any maintenance on your transmission because you can easily drain out the fluid. Im sorry sir but those are not vernier calipers. They are good quality digitals made by mitutoyo years ago but they are def not vernier.. which would be huge calipers that read similar to a pi tape.. you cant miss them, about 3 feet long. Sorry I check them for a living I had to point it out.

Pointless,? is your logic,who wants to make a freaking mess every time that you removed the Pan to change either fluid or filter ..
@@felipevalles8041 yeah, pointless. If you make a big mess taking off the pan then maybe working on autos isn't your thing. Stay in the kitchen sweety. . Gee, like do the math. Every 70 to 75k miles until you change. Maybe use the valve 1 time, that's if your pan doesn't warp and you keep your ride for 150k miles. Risk the integrity of your pan and your entire transmission to save 5 minutes on your next trans change if you even have your ride that long...LMFAO! Yeah, maybe check your logic.
@@JourneyToTheTruthandTR I bet if you buy a used car with a tranny drain plug you will thank the previous owner for doing that,I like the fact that all my cars been sold had the drain plug,in case that the new owner wants to do the service before the 50-75k mark. sometimes you have to think about others as well,that is my logic sweety.

Im with you on that and have done it that way before but for the videos, we try to keep it for the more novice watchers out there
