I knew immediately that Trixie was going to find this show saccharine. Because we all know her sad life growing up. 22:43 Katya is so genuine when she talks about their romance being age appropriate here that you can sorta see some anger in her face, and I get the feeling it comes from the fact that much of what we see nowadays in teenage coming-of-age movies and series is overwhelmingly sexual and they end up missing the point. A lot of us didn’t get to experience this kind of romance when we were teenagers because being gay was so taboo and when we turned to entertainment they would only show steeyotypical caracters who only represented a small chunck of our community. A lot of us didn’t believe we could have this type of romance in our lives. I think that’s one of the main reasons this show was so successful. It shows pure, innocent romance between two young men without neglecting the hardships that queer people have to go through for not being heteronormative. Truly, this plot and storytelling were incredibly well done and I think we can all tell from the way these two were reacting to the show. ♥️
Not exactly sure why: as a gay man in his late 40s, this has me sat here with tears rolling down my face. Seeing the differing perspectives of Trixie and Katya juxtaposed with the perspectives presented on the television show. It really was so much harder in the late 80s and early 90s, and I hope no-one every has to live through that again.
100% - I don't think the general online population understands what a generational trauma the AIDS epidemic backlash inflicted on people our age. We weren't really old enough to be in ACT-UP or that sort of thing, but we're a little older than the general online population - we're maybe 5-15 years older than Katya, after all. Gay representation was basically only tragedy, bisexuals were always villains, and trans people didn't exist at all in the media.
On the plus side, after taking a dive into the Heartstopper fandom, I gotta say, I think the kids are OK. I understand why these two might be a bit jaded, but for some of us Heartstopper is self-care. Then again, so are drag queens.

I loved that as well because I felt the same way when I watched it. No one died from AIDS, suicide or drugs after falling in love, which is what usually happens in LGBTQI movies/series. Just kids holding hands and kissing in the rain ♥️

@@FeatheredWingz I can see why they think that, to be honest. Heartstopper doesn't have all that tragic drama and A LOT of people (like Trixie, for example) complained it's too unrealistic. LGBTQ+ people suffer so much in life that they sometimes can't fathom the idea of a happy life and just see it as an utopia. It's honestly sad.

I love how sweet and wholesome Heartstopper is, yet it raises so many poignant issues that queer teens have to navigate. It’s presented in a way that meant I could watch it with my 8 and 12 year old boys. I feel it’s so important that they see that sexuality isn’t necessarily something you just “know”, and that it can be a journey of discovery over time for some people. When my eldest saw Nick googling, he immediately said “that’s totally something I’d do too!”.
4:28 rlly glad trixie brought this up cause I've always loved how despite being a sensitive guy who usually can't stick up for himself all of the time, he knows his boundaries and does make them clear when needed
I unapologetically watched this show all the way through multiple times In a single weekend. Its the first queer romance I've seen in idek how long that just feels nice to watch instead of the depressing doom and gloom, the heavy subjects are addressed but not in a way to take away from the nice stuff! I think in the show it (can) looks like he googles WHAT bisexuality is (especially when you just watch it briefly like for this reaction) and that was her main issue. Not "Am I bisexual" but "WHAT IS bisexuality" . And he is like 17 in the show (right?) and you KNOW what it is at that point, maybe not if you are it. I think that's her main complaint :D

I understand what Trixie says about it being very cheesy but I think that's what I love it about it what makes it so important to me. The queer community rarely get just a cheesy love story, and as a teenager myself to have one that relates so closely to my life is really meaningful. Seeing a gay relationship that doesn't end in horrible realities, but just a wholesome sweet love story really restores a sense of hope that doesn't come with being queer even in 2022.
I agree. I grew up with the angst and tragic stories, that it was sort of hard to picture a healthy relationship, but Heartstopper is super cheesy but it’s what breaks that perception for me
Growing up with stuff like prayers for Bobby and broke back mountain. This series is such a wholesome cute moment everyone deserves to have.

I really love Katya for how much she fights back against bi erasure. I really can’t put into words how much it means to me to have my identity accepted by a gay person. I am a B and an LGT ally, but some of the most hurtful shit I’ve ever been told about my sexuality came from Ls and Gs, so this really makes my heart happy.
Trust me as a gay guy being bisexual is totally a real and valid things. Whoever gives you shit can hopefully eat shit if they ever eat ass again. Again accidents happen so I hope they sufferrrr 🥸😡
I think it comes from the odd persistent insistence that ppl must always "choose a side".. there's always been so little respect for anyone who's of the "..why not ~both?" mindset across all facets of life & it seems that majority is always just so adamant about forcing choices that they instinctively BULLY ppl to fit in their idea of how it shd be even when it makes them end up being so hypocritical.. if only they could all just be more openminded & empathetic!
as a bi-romantic ace who's also somewhat nonbinary, I'd never felt "gay" enough to use any of the ~usual terms.. but nowadays I think "queer" covers it all rather nicely ♡
