Saving a 50 year old Shetland 535 Cabin Cruiser

  • My first attempt at "saving" a boat. This Shetland 535 was bought as a "basket case" project including a trailer and the Mariner 60 outboard. The Shetland serial number shows it as made in 1972. The 1983 Mariner 60 (a rebadged Yamaha 60C) is shown being rebuilt in another video, it was barely running and only firing on 1 cylinder. All of the control cables and steering were practically useless. It originally had cable steering. Those that know the 535 will appreciate the modification to the transom well drains, this allows all of the water to drain completely, and not leave 2-3 includes of water and gunge floating around.
I have not refurbished the cabin area yet as the "project" has stalled until I can decide on the internal layout.

Hi where did you get the grip tape for the sides?

Anti-slip tape. Bought it from Travis Perkins and Screwfix. I made soft pencil marks on the deck to align it. The shaped ends were made by sticking masking tape to the deck, drawing a pencil line and cut to shape. Then peeled off and stuck to the anti-slip tape for cutting. I think the 2" tape was about £1.00 a metre, comes in several sizes. Sheds a bit of abrasive after fitting but easily hosed off. Regards Neil
