I ruptured my disc in the lower l5-6 working as a commercial diver at 25. I suffered the next 26 yrs with different modalities if treatment. I lived with the pain. Mostly skated less because of the pain. Then one morning I woke up and I couldn't stand up or bend over and lost control. They did a procedure ( micro disectomy ) removing the ruptured bulge of the disc with a Lazer. Fantastic!! Very little incision and short healing recovery time. I wish I had it done earlier except it was a new procedure at the time. Almost pain free 5 years later.! It all good! I wish you all the healing for you ! You have inspired me to get back up on my skates after a long recovery from a fractured neck.. Thanks for your channel and energy.. Blessings.

Chiropractors are the best! I’m myself a massage therapist for high performance athletes and one of my colleagues told me “every masseur needs a chiropractor!” She’s totally right! I’m quite sure I had a similar lesion as yours, and I know what you mean... Just don’t be scared nor stiff to avoid any eventual injury since the local becomes apparently a vulnerable point and that’s why you have to keep on moving to stimulate the production of collagen type 2 (our “grease” between our joints, roughly speaking). Many surgeries could be avoided if properly treated; surgery should be the last option! Looking forward to seeing you again on the move!!!

After a major flare up when I could barely move, I went to the osteopath 5 times and the effect was amazing. Now if I've been paddle-boarding and the end of the summer my back feels a little sore, I'll go to the osteopath for a tune-up and now I hardly get any back problems.

Hello Indy! I'm so sorry that you're being struggling with your back. The pain in major joints and on ypur spine are the worst. I've had a sprain in my right knee. I have hyper flexibility in most of my joints (that if I had your gymnast training could be super cool and maybe I could turn myself into a pretzel but didn't happen) and it was while I was skating. Well as a donkey I went to work the next day (the injury happened on Sunday, so my knee inflamed as a cauliflower) and scheduled an appointment with the doc in office. The guy checked my joints and that's when we realized about my hyper mobility, and sends me pain killers and antiinflammatories, also medicated salts that had to be applied with a soaked rag damped in hot water, and then compresses with ice... I did all the gig and the fluid stills sitting in my knee. After a month of fluid trapped, he tells me that a syringe might be needed to get release the fluid. I never had the liquid removed because the knee started to get better but even when I was ordered to go through physical therapy, it costs cash and I wasn't gaining enough to get therapy. I had a bruise for 6 months, which I called "Ugly Betty". Now I have a more flexible knee than the other and when needed I use a jogging ring to contain the joint if I feel it too loose. I'm not advised to run and in a bad day I can feel it bent backwards, a little.
Moral of the story: muscle relaxers work wonders to prevent your muscles to be "locked" and to perform the exercises needed in therapy so take them. I have constant pain due lumbago and sciatic nerve and they really help me to be able to make the stretches I need to relieve the pain. And second, do your therapy as God commands please!! Also check with the physical therapist which kind of exercises you can do to give support and strength to your back.
I hope you heal soon and smoothly.
PS: I forgot! Talk to your doctor about collagen supplements. Also if an specific diet can help you with your inflammation and maybe a nutritionist can give you a great input.
I'm all for a holistic approach that complements the medical treatment. Best of both worlds. Hugs Indy!

I shattered my ankle bones on one foot. Had the leather boot roller derby skates when it happened, skate wheels got caught in a big sidewalk crack.. I kept going but my foot didn't follow me; ripped my foot away from my leg basically. Wasn't able to get a walking cast during any of the recovery time after the (emergency) surgery. A specialized orthopedic surgeon. Was flown in, it was that bad. (4 months laid up). Had to learn to walk again after the cast was removed. Not able to take ballet. Was forbidden to skate again, of course. But skating was in my blood!! A few years later I got back into skating when inlines hit the market and I had the plates and screws removed. Rollerblades' hard boot allowed me to gain confidence in skating without fear of reinjuring my ankle. Started doing dance and tricks again but it was so different from roller skates. Fast forward 25 years and I happened upon your channel over a year ago. Tho I'm 50 years old now, I'm literally DYING to get back into quads! You've re-sparked my love of ROLLER skating... even tho I'm an inline junkie (I paid more for my seba Igor freestyles than the cost of the replacement engine for my husband's car!) Tho I currently have a knee injury, no one understands my unabashed desire (but slight inability) to get back to skating. I think I was born to have wheels under my feet... slow, gentle exercise will strengthen your back. Never give up skating! You're an inspiration. Take care!!

Back injury? Me too, bulging L5 disc. I was told by the doctor and the physiotherapist that it's almost always caused by long term factors like posture, weight, weak core, and usually not from a specific fall, *but* that falling while it's weakened could cause a complete rupture so to not skate or run or anything like that for a while... The pain was intense and *constant* for two weeks and then just suddenly stopped, but other lingering symptoms down the leg were hanging around, which is when I went to get physiotherapy. That's been almost all about gradually building up core strength while the disc heals, slowly going from very gentle abdominal work to full on deadlifts with weights. I've only had to do one specific stretch, apparently the sciatic nerve runs right through the middle of this one muscle, not around it, and pressure from that was part of my symptoms. Long story short, better now, and last week I skated for the first time in *8 months*!

Hang in there! Work hard on therapy but p!ease dont do too much too soon. Find new hobbies or get back to o!d ones you love. I totally understand the frustration, I just passed 1 yr since Achilles rupture repair. (I posted on your last video I am the adult recreational gymnast). My injury gave me a chance to refocus on artwork, reading, music and flexible stretching. Actually that is when I discovered your videos and ordered quad skates for a new hobby once I was cleared for skating!! I was always a rollerblader so it was fun to try something new! You just have to remember you will get through it but try to still enjoy every day..even if you have to lay around, just enjoy not having to rush around and binge watch a favorite show. My injury gave me a chance to slow down. And now covid it's shut down anyway, I never officially went back to work in the office, still at home. No gym for me until vaccine! Anyway that's my advice. I also suggest you check out Bob and Brad RUclips Physical therapist videos for discs. Tons of info. They recommend the traction as you were already doing with the walker. Plus back extensions (if not painful). Good luck with PT, be ready it's expensive even with good insurance so do what you can at home! Take care! :)

Scrapes, bruises, aching, twisted ankles... I put up with a lot to live happily and continue skating. It starts to feel good after a while when my muscles tear because I know I'm just going to get better. I hope your body heals as much as it can and that you bounce right back to being the energetic and positive Indy that you are! The videos have been really inspiring, especially during these isolating times. Here's to 2021!

“If you’re sitting at home with a broken ankle right now, I know you know.”
Literally me right now. Broke my ankle on skates yesterday really not doing much of anything. I had watched part of the other injuries video the week before and when I fell I was like yup that’s broken.

coming from no athletic training whatsoever, it has taken me a long time to recognize my weaknesses and functional failures. I am just coming to realize that I have poor core engagement, and always have. Can you make a video specifically on this? What does it mean to skate with an engaged core? How will I know I am doing it right, or training something else improperly? I would love to see what you are doing to strengthen your core to protect your back. I surely hope your path to healing is a short one.

How is your back doing now? Any updates, new treatments? Everyone should drop sugar and dairy from their diets in general. 30 yrs from now you will thank yourself. If you like sweets check out choco zero. That's were I get my chocolate and pancake syrup from. Best.

Handstands! My back would be injured too. I don’t have any help either so putting on skates for skating in circles without falling for 20 minutes is enough. Regular chiropractor adjustments keep the spine open to prevent pinching nerves. Also I have an inversion table to stretch.

As well Indy, maybe in the future you would be able to talk a little bit more about how skating in the boot with elevation (heel) affects our posture and muscle memory? And is it actually beneficial to skate in skates with heel or without heel? Because most of the videos online are talking about how it would benefit your performance rather than your body in a long term... Justi xxx

In a way, I find it fascinating how I've never broken, sprained or twisted anything in my entire life. I did have a minor surgery in June of 2015- which did prevent me from running or jumping for two months. Though I've never done uneven bars or vault before, I have done at least fragments of trampoline and balance beam as well as an unknown degree of floor exercise. In fifteen years (and then some), I've only ever skated four times, but have never injured myself. Admittedly I have been wanting to get back into skating sports throughout the past year, but I haven't really had another chance to try again. -_-

I'm making progress on skating properly! Man, I never knew how much fun it is.
Thanks Indy, for inspiring me to try this amazing hobby out. 😁❤️

I broke my ankle in derby practice 3 practices after benching, and 3 weeks before my first bout. I never ended up being able to fully get back to it, despite loads of PT and exercising. It happened in June 2018, and I still have issues with my ankle that prevent me from going back to derby. Mostly because I get sharp pain when I go up on my toes, and you can’t derby without toe stops.
I had gone to some practices since my injury, but when we were doing some drills which included running on our toe stops, my ankle just went full noodle when I tried.

ive hurt my self many times, i've been roller skating for 2 months and i fall, i still do! i was trying to skate on 1 foot then i pulled my shoulder nerve and it hurt so bad! i was crying and i layed in bed for 2 hours. i got better and skate. then this happened. i went to the skate park and went down the big pool. i was doing good until,i fell on my chest. i couldn't breath and i was traumatized. the week after my dad took me to the skate park and i wanted to try the tiny pool. when he let go i lost my breath because i was afraid i would fall again. 2 weeks after i showed my dad how i can twirl and skate on 1 foot then he thought i was ready. went back and i tried the small pool to work my confidence, then i decided to go down the big pool on my own, so i did and fall but almost on my chest, i caught my self with my wrist gaurds and it wasn't that bad because i knew it would happen again, second try i fell on my butt- didn't hurt as much but i did. lol. then i went down again and ran into a pyramimid?!?!?! last try i went down safely and didn't fall!
i learned to pick my self up and try again. :)

last Friday I got my first roller skating injury and hurt my knee pretty bad, I'm not sure if I dislocated it and/or tore something, but it popped out and then I popped it back in almost immediately. it's been about 4 days and I'm able to walk mostly but my knee still bothers me and it's difficult to stand straight on it or if I turn on the knee, it pops out again so I haven't been turning on it. I miss skating already and I am hoping this heals on its own so I don't have to pay for any hospital bills. Since it's doing better I am thinking it'll be fine. It also never swelled or bruised but if it doesn't get better I'll go to the hospital. I hope you are able to get back to skating soon and I hope I can as well lol. I love your videos and watching them while I can't skate helps me learn stuff for when I can again :))

I think I must hold the record for one of the worst broken legs ever. While skating my tib/fib shattered from my knee to my ankle, in total I had 9 breaks and I had a full compound fracture bone on view... My leg rotated over 90 degrees backwards tearing my tibula artery in half and I lost almost 1 litre of blood. In the ambulance they gave me Ketamine and we didn't know but I was allergic so I was taken to hospital in critical condition. While in hospital they plated, pinned and screwed my leg back together, and I had a full knee reconstruction.
But 4 weeks later I got something called "compartment syndrome " and a bone infection, I came within 8 hours of losing my leg. I had 11 rounds of 1000 milligram antibiotics and I got to keep my leg... My leg looks pretty awful but I'm fully healed after 9 months... And Im back skating again, I just love skating so much and I had not one single doubt that I'd skate again.

Yeah. 😏😏😏 I fractured my elbow as a child and I still skated with a cast on. I also fell on my face and chipped my tooth later. I think that might have been when I stopped skating. Stree skating was my preference too. The indoor rink is too slippery. But I miss it...... at 46 🦗🦗🦗 😏😏😏 I'm glad you bring up core strength because that's what I need to do, period. I hope you feel better soon.
Skating was a part of my identity too. Growing up, I wore skates everywhere, even in the supermarket. They were my shoes so I get it.

Hey Indy, I usually stop skating in winter.... It is so damn cold and because of that I have noticed that my muscles keep tensing too much and I keep injuring myself more often.... I had a similar injury (back and skating related) and due to my negligence of not resting for a few months the symptoms kept coming back to the point that I had to stop skating for a year. I hope you give yourself time to rest and your body comes back stronger! Justixxx

Perhaps it is the age where you have to leave the mad tricks etc behind.
I am 36 and I would dare do half the stuff you do.
I think you might consider researching slipped discs a bit more, from what little I know about them. I am vastly unsure of the stuff you said about the diet effecting the injury. A spine specialist MD would be good to talk to I think.
