And not everybody picks that up on first hearing, so good on ya, Tim. Good appreciation for the story being told in the lyrics. Chappell absolutely excels at narrative... along with everything else she excels at!
Our already knowing how well she does that, and how one of her trademarks is cleverly changing meaning with just very subtle changes of lyrics, helps us all be alert for these. Of course, when were actively neing swrpt away in just the gorgeousness of her voice and music, it's still possible for some of the meaning change-ups to get by us on the first hearing.

My favorite band ever is Pearl Jam so I know of several songs where Eddie does this as well. "Daughter" he sings "A young girl...violins(violence)". He sings it in such a way where you hear both words which obviously have very different meanings and foreshadows what the song's theme is about. Another example is from "I Am Mine."
      He toggles between the following:
"All the innocents lost at one time"
and "All the innocence lost at one time."
Means two slightly different things. One refers to the people lost at the Rokskilde festival and the other the band's loss of innocence after this tragic event. Love it when artists do this with their lyrics.

One of the interesting things about Subway is that with each festival appearance, Chappell seems to hold that last money note longer and longer, seemingly playing a self challenge game with herself. Also Subway is a song she's performed at least twice in recent shows after being fairly openly emotional on stage, and still delivered a perfect performance.
I find the song giving me 1970's feels in many ways in its opening parts, with its dreamy drifty sound that feels so appropriate to the longing nature of the piece. The end with the flip between "She's got a way" and "She got away" is in my eyes a brilliant bit of lyrical design, that not only allows her to deliver that belt note, but also to build up to it using each subtle verbal switch as a ladder up to it.
Subway seems to be a piece that is clearly part of the Good Luck Babe songwriting era of her work. If you play it right after GLB the slow down ending of GLB and the slow dreamy build of Subway fit together well, almost as if designed to be paired on an album in that order. I suspect it was going to be her second single, but with GLB's huge success she didn't feel it was strong enough to be the follow up which is going to be the focus os a lot of "Does she really have it?" sorta eyeballing. To me it's a piece that shows continuing evolution to her skills on many fronts.
As to the next piece to review, hands down it should be Kaleidoscope, and this specific live performance recorded for the video: ruclips.net/video/imHkz5nD6gs/видео.html Given your pure joy in artists being emotional conduits for the work, this one will hit you hard. It's also one that she wrote totally solo
And though the live stuff fits your style of reaction so perfectly, I feel you should work your way through the album tracks in order from 1 to 14 and provide your reactions to the studio versions and how they compare in your mind to the live ones you have seen.Or, even better, you could even find a concert performance of the track then play the studio version and contrast in each video That would give you a 14 video series (15 if you include GLB) to work on which would be a distinctive addition to your channel.
And if you really wanted to start to show the evolution of Chappell as an artist this piece "Sugar High" ruclips.net/video/O4RARnYN7Sw/видео.html was part of her work at the end of what I think of her first era, where she was doing moody cursive style gothic pieces that had gotten her signed to her first label. Eventually she'd write Pink Pony Club and the label balked at releasing it as "It was so different and would alienate her fans" and eventually she was dropped. But Sugar High in my eyes is a piece that really shows to me the moment when she was starting to change styles from the Cursive work, to the modern Rise and Fall era. You can hear the beginnings of things that are all over the current work starting in there. I feel it would be a good piece to consider for reaction knowing its context.
Great review as always. Thank you.

Tim... Bob the dummy is there because it's part of the wrestling, training gym theme of her set. She had local LGBTQ+ body builders working out onstage for a bunch of songs in the background. You should do festival journey review of her starting this year with Coachella to Bonnaroo to Lolapolooza to Outside Lands. It's an amazing progression of the stage/audience size and her evolution of performing the songs. She has a unique theme for each performance as well. TinyDesk is still the best because it's stripped down and really showcases his vocals. Her Bonnaroo set is still my favorite festival performance because it has the lingering feeling that a paradigm shift is about to happen in the music industry. It would not surprise me that someday Chappell will have some type of concert film or a musical that will be played at midnight in movie theaters like Rocky Horror, but with a Pink Pony storyline. AMC, are you listening? You're welcome!

I had not heard of Chapel until one of your video reactions and she blew me away as much as she did you.
Sadly on my drive home from work yesterday I heard on the radio that she has put out a statement saying that she has been diagnosed with clinical depression.
Due in large to her sudden rise in fame and with so many changes in her life both big and small that she had not previously given much thought to therefore was not prepared for, eg how she can no longer do the simple things that used to bring her joy, such as going thrift shopping, without having to organise security.
Apparently it has even got so bad that some fans had found her father’s phone number and were calling him at all hours wanting to know all about her and where she was etc.
Part of her statement said (and of I’m paraphrasing all of this of course) that Being my fan does not mean that you have the right to have access to me 24/7.
I was impressed with her stating that. I might be wrong and perhaps you could speak to this whole topic in an appropriate video at some point? I feel in the past Stars just had to put up with all of the fans, whacko ones and all, for fear of losing popularity or their place on the charts. If so most likely they were pressured by the record companies to not speak up for themselves?
I think in this day and age of the need for instant gratification and of entitlement sadly if the big Stars don’t start laying down the ground rules more and more are going to suffer with similar mental health issues.
Although it was for slightly different reasons, when Ren said that any fans he finds behaving in a way that doesn’t align with his morals and mindset that he would block them without hesitation. I actually physically applauded him, like a mad woman applauding madly at my iPad screen.
I have despaired for quite some time now that the concept of boundaries (and numerous other aspects of considerations required for living somewhat cohesively in society) was becoming extinct in this modern world.
I hope that more and more stars get on board with setting and maintaining boundaries for themselves. For their own benefit but it would be nice if the trickle down effect was that having consideration for others might return to the collective consciousness.

I'm here for everything Chappell you review.
Next, maybe her Kaleidoscope live studio official video.
Night before last I heard live Wes Leavins fronting the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. You'd love their music, Wes's incredible voice, the things he does with it, and the emotion he delivers. Thank youuuu! Thank you😅i have been one of your viewers nagging you for this one😅 Also, I just came from a video of Kelly Clarkson and Miranda Lambert covering goodluck babe. Kelly was (as you are) talking about the head to chest voice flipping that Chappell does.

Oh wow, I have to check it out! How did they do at staying expressively connected to the text?

@@TimWelchVocalStudio It was kind of just a snippet so I feel like they didn't get a chance to 'go there'. Would love to hear either of them try it out individually- on their own. It's a hard song and even Kelly who is an absolute power house was tussling with it a bit. I would love to hear Adele sing one of Chappell's songs. Her voice is really different from Chappell's but she has that same raw emotive quality and uses her voice very interestingly to maximize that.

Can someone define "riffing" in this context?

      @TimWelchVocalStudio  4 дня назад +1

Riffing is adding extra notes to the melody for expressive effect.

Another young artist to check out is Faouzia! Not only can she play multiple instruments, she has a Moroccan background and uses those traditional style scales systems blended into her music. She's great live, acoustic, or fully produced and pop sounding.

Howdy! Big fan of your videos; I particularly like the physiological breakdowns!
If you're looking for a next song, I suggest either Kaleidescope or Good Hurt. In the former there is some interesting voice quality jumping around, and in the latter she sounds like a completely different person.
Regardless of what you do, I'll be watching!

It's both she's got away and she got away--she's dressed in a luchador-like outfit. The mannikin was left over from various athletes working out behind her during her opening songs. Don't know why they left it there.

Thank you for another great one! Please think about reacting to Emily Armstrong both in Linkin Park and Dead Sara. I honestly can't wrap my mind around the power, range, and versatility of her voice. 😊

I'm ngl, the first time I heard it in her Bangaroo(?) Performance I couldn't make out the lyrics I legit thought she was saying either "she's gotta wait" or "su-u-b way" 🫣😭
